BREAKING: Casper Ruud wins the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award for 2022!

Nadal had to deal with more difficult moments than Ruud, because of Nadal's injury frustrations etc.
Plus Nadal had to show grace in victory when he won the AO and RG titles.

We all know Rafa voted for Casper. And a win for Casper is a win for Rafa here.

They've made a mockery of this award but good to see them actually pick the right winner for the 1st time in years. Ruud is a great guy and good sportsman.

So the actual peers in the locker room - who know all these guys way better than us and spend way more time with them in day to day situations than you or I - just suddenly voted with integrity for the first time in 20 years?

Sorry mate. Respect you, but not buying it.

You don't have to buy it but from my point of view, they made a complete mockery of it. I also never said anything about the last 20 years.

Federer has won this award 13 times !

It's unbelievable that Nole has never won this award and yet his fans continue to proclaim he's GOAT.

Exactly. Everyone knows that showing grace in victory is one of the most difficult things to do. Harder than winning majors, probably.

Congratulations to Casper and the Rafael Nadal Academy!

IDK. Between his 11 minutes toilet break against Hurkacz in Toronto, his blatant lack of interest / fighting spirit in his dead rubber match against Nadal and the drama against Rune in RG (there is NO EVIDENCE that Rune lied about it, so I give both of them the benefit of the doubt)... does he really deserve it? I can think of a few ones in the top-30 who deserve it more.
Some other players were crucified for 6-7 minutes toilet breaks and for tanking dead rubber matches so I will hold Ruud to the same standards.

Glad Nadal didn't win it though. After that Sonego drama in Wimbledon, it would've been a colossal joke.

The big 3 have numbers speak for themselves.

This is about professional ATP awards which are also important part in evaluating the player's in ATG
Fed won this award 13 times, even though he never did anything close to outstanding sportsmanship. Guy was not a bad sport but not a good one either. cold, professional, that's it. Nadal is nominated for it all the time and won it a few times(?) even though he's actively obstructing his opponents by stretching and breaking time time limit. Also grunts as loud as he can, from the first to last point. It's basically a popularity contest. This year's winner is the first to make any sense in a long time.

Ruud is such a good sport he sportingly allowed Nadal to win RG (/s) but seriously he seems very nice and respectful so that's good

The GOAT doesn't have to be St. Peter. Tennis is not a contest for the election of the new pope, but who plays tennis, the sport, the best.

Kobe was not liked throughout his career also. Yet, here I am, claiming he is the second best ever after Jordan.

Nadal took extended toilet breaks. That's not good sportsmanship. The 8 minutes he took after the first set against Tiafoe was another negative.

Nole has no time for these Mickey Mouse Awards. He has a more important task to write tennis history by winning the most amount of the biggest titles: 2 x (AO + FO + W + USO + all 9 Masters + WTF). It will be incredible if he makes it 3x.

We see the players on TV when all the cameras are watching.

The guys who vote for this award see the players everyday on the tour. In the locker room. At meals. With the trainers and staff. They have real encounters with them and actual conversations.

They are their peers who know them way better than you or I.

So I’d give them way more credit to know what these players are like more than fan opinions at TTW.

To you it's mickey mouse because your boy has so few. Professional tennis awards do count to your legacy thus add value to your placement in ATG.

So you think Fed got all these rewards because he shows the most sportsmanship at meals and in the gym? I never heard of Federer reaching out to players. It doesn't even suit him as he seems to be a private person (which is perfectly fine). IMO, your conduct on court is what should get you nominated for it (with examples of outstanding sportsmanship) and I don't see any reason why would Federer even be nominated for it once, outside of his sponsor being the main sponsor of this award for years. And why would Nadal be nominated? Only answer is that it's a popularity contest. It's just ridiculous. Players most likely want to be on a good side of mega stars and their sponsors (which most of them share with Fedal or would want to), so they vote for the most popular player most of the time.
