Breaking: Rankings to be frozen, no tennis until June 8 earliest

Obviously, even within tennis, this isn't that important, and in the scheme of things, it's not that important at all...But we're here for a release from various stressors and for fun, and I just want these decisions to be as fair to all (as possible). Obviously, we should all just want tennis - once it's deemed safe to resume - to do just that. This is uncharted territory.

I can see a good case made for either "freezing" weeks or letting them accumulate. But by the end of 2020, even if abbreviated, points should only be counted from matches of 2020. Otherwise, I don't know what's fair, but I think it should be more about points earned than points defended/lost.

I feel it's a non-sense decision about rankings.
Heading into Madrid the only thing we would know for sure was that Nole will lose 1000 points from 2019. The same about Nadal in Rome etc.
We couldn't have any sureness about how much points every player could rack up in those tournaments. So a 0 for everyone is pretty fair in my view.

Now we have a problem about when points will be removed.
After the frozen period? I don't see any differents with let ranking works.
At the next edition of those tournaments? In this case in march 2021 we'll have points from Rome 2019, but not points from Australian Open 2020 or Toronto 2019, counts for rankings.

Week#1 count is another problem, if they would let ranking works they wouldn't have any reason to freeze them. Now it's debatable.

Weird decision IMO.

What if part of this preserving and maximising meant that Wimbledon has some slight wriggle room to delay its tournament despite the grass issue?

The statement does specifically mention the AELTC by name.

We are assessing all options related to preserving and maximising the tennis calendar based on various return dates for the Tours, which remains an unknown at this time. We are committed to working through these matters with our player and tournament members, and the other governing bodies, in the weeks and months ahead.

Now is not a time to act unilaterally, but in unison. All decisions related to the impact of the coronavirus require appropriate consultation and review with the stakeholders in the game, a view that is shared by ATP, WTA, ITF, AELTC, Tennis Australia, and USTA.

So does this count for official weeks at #1 for the WTA?

Barty is currently at 35 weeks at #1 but if she's essentially guaranteed #1 til June 8th then she'll have 47 weeks as #1.
