Brian Boland leaves UVA

If you travel all the time, you don't see your family, anyway. One of the UVa fans ran into Boland last August and Coach told him, "I have not slept in my own bed in a month." How much do you suppose he saw his parents under those circumstances?

makes sense then

Boland mentions that he expects to be traveling a lot in his USTA role but he also notes that he's looking forward to being closer to his family. Those are his words...not mine. And being closer to parents/family isn't about only seeing them. I'm sure he was thinking of being part of a more easily accessed support system. Again..I find it hard to believe that he would go all the way to Waco simply because he was traveling a lot without financial incentive.

" My family and I will be moving to the Orlando area at the completion of the academic school year. We are looking forward to being closer to family, since my parents, brother and several other family members currently reside in Tampa. Although I plan on dedicating a tremendous amount of time working and traveling in my new role, it will be a nice change to have my immediate family members close to home for my wife, four kids and me to enjoy."

When Mark Hurd is probably the largest alumni booster to your program, my guess is most anything is possible.

Must just be a financial thing or mutual with the USTA, Baylor and Waco can't be at the top of anyone's list

Especially Waco over Charlottesville (though he had already left UVA and went to Florida). But, people live in less-preferred locations all the time because of money.

Ok but howw many of these programs are in the most desirable places ever? You've got Waco, College Station, Stillwater, Lubbock, Starkville, Tuscaloosa, Fayetteville, Blacksburg, etc etc.

Most of these coaches spend the majority of their time at home or at the tennis courts anyway. Location is a bit overrated for coaches I think.

Perfectly legit point. It goes for everybody in any field. Most of the time you're at home or at work. Of course, there's places you'd prefer to live, but if you can get a big salary bump to go to a less desirable place, many people will do it. Again, you're gonna be at work or tending to life's necessities most of the time anyway. So if you're in a less desirable place, you simply then use you're increased salary and sometimes decreased cost of living to get out of town and go to fun/interesting places when you can.

FYI—Waco is a city of 136,000 that is less than 1.5 hours from Austin, Dallas, Ft. Worth; 2.5 hours from San Antonio; 3 hours from Houston. Each week there are 15,000-20,000 tourist visiting Waco. Some weekends there are 70,000+. There are times there are no hotel rooms available in Waco hence an additional 10 hotels are either in construction or in planning and that is in addition to the 6 that are completed. Over 6500 new homes are either in construction or in planing/ platting. At the same time, housing remains relatively affordable and there are few traffic issues. Commute times are minimum.

This year Waco will host an Iron Man, Wakeboard competition, speed boat racing, disc golf championship, mountain bike races -the Magnolia marathon was just completed - 20,000 people that weekend. Craft beers, award winning whisky distillery - downtown is booming and it is now rippling to surrounding areas of downtown.

Waco has the Brazos River running through it and the largest lake within an MSA in the Unites States.

Whatever you thought Waco was it is no longer that.

Right, and those are all valid reasons why a top rated TV show like Fixer Upper is able to take place in Waco, TX. Some of the smaller college towns are really great places, if you like smaller town living. Some may disagree I know, but Knoxville, TN, Oxford, TN, Manhattan, KS are great places. Never been to Waco, but I'd like to visit!

I've talked to different members of the Boland family a few times in the past, nice folks. My guess is he prefers the college coach lifestyle to USTA... seeing some of the diva personalities, it makes sense.

Probably fair to say that his skillset is more suited to building a college program than to USTA player development.
That’s putting it mildly.

Boland is a winner. He proved that he knows how to create a winning program. He obviously knows what he is doing. How did they blow this opportunity?

But it wasn’t just with Boland with whom they blew an opportunity to do something good for American professional tennis. They also just did it to McEnroe, someone who knows how to win the biggest tournaments and who defeated the greats of his era! Here is McEnroe explaining how he offered to work with and develop local NYC talent himself and all he asked for was use of the indoor tennis courts at the USTA Billy Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows and $10M:

Wouldn’t that have been awesome to have a former American great passing on a champion mindset to the next generation of American players? We would have had something to look forward to.
