I just remembered Fed lost to Haas in Halle and then went on to win Wimbledon. Maybe, history will repeat itself and Fed will win AO. Very unlikely, but one can hope.
Yea but he almost lost Benneteau anyway. And he had won a lot of titles coming up to Wimbledon anyway so he had confidence.

What is there to be confident about these days? Any tough match like the Benneteau one and Fed will fold cheaply. It's getting downright ridiculous.

I AM happy for Hewitt though. Good for him for continuing to give it his all.

Man there is no hope. I had deluded myself into thinking that Federer might have some chance at the AO over the past month, but nope, not anymore.

And watch, Federer will go to the press conference side-step around the issue of his horrendous performance and then say "Lleyton is a great opponent. You can't win them all. I didn't think I played bad today. I feel good about the AO". Kinda like he did at Wimbledon; spent the entire conference talking about how he played okay but stakhovsky was an underrated player. Credit to Melzer for telling it like it is after he took down Stakhovsky in the next round:"You go out there and show him that I'm not Roger Federer and I can return his serve and make him play tough volleys".

Federer is living in a fantasy if he thinks the matches are "on his racquet" like he stated a month ago.
Why are you only coming to this conclusion now and getting so upset about it? If you have been a long time Federer fan you can see that he has declined and is no longer consistent. Better to accept it and then if he happens to win something, it will be a nice surprise. You can't bet on Federer to win slams any longer or even make it past the QF's IMO.

You are right. His confidence has been shattered to the very extreme. And losing in a final of a 250 against his old contemporary won't help either.

Of course I can see that he has declined, but keep in mind that Federer won Wimbledon 2012 and I still vividly recollect all the times in 2011 when you said he would never win another major title in his career. I'm not expecting Federer to win 3/4 slams in 2014, but I was hoping for him to make a run at some of these slams. You make it seem like Federer has been hopeless for a decade. Last year at the AO, he was in form and only went down in 5 to Murray in a brutal match that pretty much gave Djokovic an enormous physical edge over Murray in the final. That was less than an year ago.

Hewitt's record vs Top Ten players from 2013 is now 7-2

DelPox3 Raonic, Berdych, Wawrinka and now Fed

Mind you Raonic was 11 at the time.

This basically sums up my feelings. Watching Federer at this year's AO is going to be torture.

I do think the new racquet has helped the serve a bit but dear lord what's the point if he's gonna play like this? 50+ unforced errors?! Bah I keep thinking he will turn it around and hit a decent patch of form but nope.

He can't even win against his own contemporaries anymore, forget about the younger generation.
Yeah, I think he should keep the racquet. His serves and forehands looked a bit nastier to me this week. Its not the racquet anyway. He just doesn't win big points.

Congrats to Rusty and the Aussie fans - between this and the Ashes, it's a good day to be an Australian!

He has won one out of the past twelve slams! There is no reason to expect him to win slams any longer with odds like that.

Yes in 2011 I was already saying he probably won't win another slam and I have been fairly accurate. He managed to have a great 2012 winning a bunch of titles and then capping it off by winning Wimbledon which was great! I think that was his last stab at glory. What really sealed it for me was the FO 2013 where Federer had the easiest draw he possibly could have had and I picked him to reach the final based on that crazy easy draw and what did he do? He was mauled by Tsonga in straights. That was it for me and my expectations for Federer winning any more slams. If he wins another slam I will be very happy for him but I certainly don't expect it and I frankly can't see it unless Edberg can really do something to help Fed physically and mentally. Sorry I love the guy but everybody has a shelf life even the very best athletes of all time.

Yep, my thoughts exactly. I keep hoping for some kind of improvement but it's all very hit or miss. About the press conferences: it's possible that he's actually annoyed and feels like we want him to feel but he doesn't want to appear depressed during his press conferences all the time so he just acts like he doesn't care.

DISGRACE Federer 8 break points like usual and can't convert one
Hewitt gets one and breaks
Joke like usual
Give it up FEderer you choker
Ridiculous post, overreaction to the extreme. A warm up tournament, first for the new year and you come up with this rambling? Give me a break. I bet you will be the first in here posting how great Fed is when he wins his 18th slam!

Honestly, Rusty tried to gift the match for the whole 3rd set but Federer was too adamant not to take it.
Congrats Rusty! Poor start for 98erer. The 2013 form continues. I think it does not matter where Federer lands in AO's draw.

Didn't see the match, as a fan these losses from Fed don't bother me now. Then again, I watched his first three matches and I don't think he played that well. If he had played well and still lost this then maybe it would be a bother. Good to see the extra zip on the serve and the occasional forehands, but the fragile nature of his current play is still there to see in my opinion. Earlier he said in an interview that he actually doesn't expect himself to be in full gear until halfway through the season. He was right about 2013 being a transition year, hope he's right about this year.

Hewitt is Hewitt. Great win for him.

Looks like the Edberg partnership is working like a dream.

LOL at people thinking that Murray would lose to Roger should they meet at AO!

Feddy has a lot to work on, he only broke Hewitt once all match, and in that Game Hewitt lead 40-0, and then went on to blow some easy put away shots and hit about 4 unforced errors to gift the break.

Which is so strange because I never had the feeling that Federer had a lot of trouble dealing with Hewitt's serve and could always get deep into Hewitt's service games pretty easily.

Have actually been surprised by how much harder Fed seems to be hitting the ball with the new stick. The slice seems markedly worse, though. A lot floatier.

Hewitt looked 27-28 out there, not 33. And this makes me wonder how far he could of gone without the 06-12 injuries.

"[I feel] pretty good, especially having played all the matches I have here now with the doubles in particular," said Federer. "It's a good thing.

"I didn't play great today which is a bit unfortunate. But also Lleyton was the best player I played this week. He made it toughest on me. So I have a clear idea what I need to work on, and I have a clear idea where my mind and body is at. I'm very hungry and eager to attack the Australian Open next week."
Freaking figures.

What a joke, honestly. Not a funny one either. I realise it's not being very charitable as a fan after all the entertainment he has provided us but damn am I sick of hearing the same sh-t again and seeing NO improvements.

Ok fine, the serve was a bit better than last year.

Well, its not gotten be pretty at the AO. Maybe if he gets an easy draw, he can play himself into form.

It's too bad Fed performed so bad. Age is not an excuse this time.

Hopefully Federer can get in shape for the AO to be competitive.

Kudos to Hewitt, he's a a monster.

But worse. Losing 6-1 in a set against Lleyton Hewitt in this day and age is embarrassing.
Are you freakin tellin me he got bread-sticked ? I thought it was some TB or 7-5 situation ??

What was the score ?

(Iirc, his loss to Haas was in straight sets, so this should be better).

Well the good news he got a set in this one. The bad news is that he lost the 3rd and the match.

6-1 4-6 6-3

Knowing that Hewitt upset Del Potro not too long ago gave Hewitt a good chance. Not good for Fed's confidence.

Great win for Hewitt. His 29th title at the age of almost 33 and his 8th on home soil!

This is the 9th time he has beaten Federer in 27 meetings and the 2nd time he has beaten him in a final (the finals H2H between them now runs 3-2 to Federer).

This is the first time he has won in Brisbane (although he won the event twice before when it was held in Adelaide).

With this latest title, Hewitt now equals Federer with 21 wins at ATP250 level, the most wins at this level of any player on the ATP tour.

so In my opinion, these super FAST courts really help Hewitt a lot. if Aussie open is same way then Hewitt could go far, only thing is he has to Hope his draw doesn't have BIG servers. If he has to play one of those guys, Hewitt could go out early

I was surprised with how easily Hewitt lobbed Federer in the match, back in the day (or even until recently) Federer used to own that shot.

Easily ?? roger got lobbed only 3 times. all in the crucial times. and those lobs all would have landed 1 inch inside the baseline. so Even Ivo Karlovic would not have hit a effective smash

Well, lets be honest. The guy gets asked the same stupid questions every freaking day. That's his standard response now because it has to be. He could just be honest and say "I sucked out there today," but then that would be his standard response every time he lost and we (the fans) would find something to complain about then too.

Sampras said something like that in an interview that was posted here a week or so ago. You get asked the same questions about declining and such. You need a standard response.

what is interesting is that Hewitt and Nalbandian are the next players after the big 3 that have the most wins over Roger

Federer is getting wrong advice from those around him about his racquet. It is obviously making a difference. Each time he has tried the switch has game has suffered. Yeah, hes getting older, but whoever is telling him that he needs a 98 racquet is ruining him. There are plenty of 95s and even a 93 would be fine. he needs to go back to some thing as close to his 90 as he can get. Otherwise his decline will be worse than it is.
