Call Jack Draper the new King of Forli. The young lefty has won all three of his career Challenger titles this year in the Italian city. Ironically, after winning the first of those titles he lost 1R in the second of the series of tournaments held there.

He is now ranked #146.

Following the defeat of Mate Pavic and Nikola Petkic in the second round of the men's doubles event in Miami, Joe Salisbury will replace Pavic to become the new world number one when the updated rankings are issued at the end of the tournament. The 29-year-old Londonder thus becomes the third British player to reach no. 1 on the ATP rankings after Andy Murray (singles) and his older brotherJamie (doubles).

Jack Draper won his fourth Challenger singles title of the year earlier today when he defeated the Belgian Zizou Bergs 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in the final of the tournament in Saint-Brieuc, Brittany. This latest victory will see Draper rise to around no. 124 when the new world rankings are released tomorrow.

Great achievement for Joe! Hoping his success in doubles continues.

Really promising results - I wonder how many he will collect by the end of the year. If he can be top 100 soon for direct entry into Wimbledon then that would be great. I expect he will get a WC if not but always good to get as many Brits into the draw if not to just spread the pressure about a bit more.

A winning return to tournament play earlier today for Jack Draper at the clay court Challenger in Rome. The Englishman is the no. 2 seed in the singles event and easily defeated the Kazakh Timofey Skatov in the first round, 6-2, 6-1. In the second round Draper will face an Italian, either 27-year-old Stefano Napolitano, or Giulio Zeppieri who, like Draper, is 20 years old.

British teen reaches career-high

British teenager Emma Raducanu, in her first career main-draw clay-court appearance, advanced to the quarterfinals in Stuttgart and earned 100 ranking points. This week she takes one step closer to making her Top 10 debut moving from No.12 to No.11, a new career-high.

Draper finally seems to have overcome all the dreadful sequence of injuries that he experienced in his teens. He can hopefully catch up with some of his peers now, like Sinner. With a bit of luck and perseverance, he should at least get to top 50 in my opinion.

Question: Before today, who was the last British tennis player, male or female, to win a singles title on clay?

Answer: Andy Murray, at the 2016 Italian Open.
--

Earlier today, Cameron Norrie joined this very select group of British players by defeating the Slovak Alex Molcan, 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-1 in the final of the Lyon tournament. The Briton made things much more difficult for himself than he needed to because, at one stage, he led by a set, 5-4, and 40-15 on his opponent’s serve. But the talented Molcan fought back to take the tenth game of the second set, as well as the tiebreak that ended that set.

However, there was only one player in it in the final set and the top-seeded Norrie ultimately emerged the victor about an hour after he had had his first match point.

Sadly he is a Kiwi, not a real Brit.

The ‘grass court season’ got underway in earnest earlier today, with some of the first-round matches taking place in the Surbiton Trophy Challenger tournament in south-east London. Dan Evans is the top seed in the men’s singles event, which also features Andy Murray, Liam Broady and the wildcard Ryan Peniston. The Australian Jordan Thompson is the defending champion and unseeded.

Murray was in action earlier this afternoon and beat the South Korean Hyeon Chung 6-3, 6-2 in a one-sided match. The weather is blustery but sunny and temperatures are set to rise into the high twenties later on this week.

Seven British players made it into the main draw of the singles event at this week’s Surbiton Challenger, but only one of them has made it to the quarter-finals. That player is Andy Murray, the no. 2 seed, who takes on the Australian no. 5 seed Jason Kubler tomorrow.

Earlier today, the second-last remaining British hope, top-seeded Dan Evans, was beaten by the talented young Canadian Gabriel Diallo, who is 21 and a senior at the University of Kentucky. The score was 7-5, 6-2.

I am getting excited about Scotland's 'Hotshot" Hamish Stewart. I'm watching him play in the challenger at Nottingham and he seems to have quite a game. The next MurrayGOAT? Probably not but it will be interesting to see how far he can go.

Well predicted. What with his reaching the finals of the 2024 Adelaide 250, and a good showing at the 2023 USO 4th round, he's now ranked 51.

Another Scot qualifying and doing well. Charlie Robertson, I don't know if he is playing really tall players or isn't too tall himself, I suspect the latter.

An encouraging end to 2024 for British tennis as Cameron Norrie reaches his first ATP final since the Rio Open in February 2023. Earlier on Friday, at the Moselle Open in Metz, he beat Corentin Moutet 6-2, 7-6(5) in semi-final action. In the tiebreak that ended the match Moutet led by 5 points to 2 with two serves to come, but lost the next five points. In tomorrow's final Norrie will face either Benjamin Bonzi or Alex Michelsen.

I opened this thread after reading the title thinking that it would be about Bremont or Christopher Ward watches.

An impressive performance from 18-year-old Henry Searle at this week's Challenger tournament in Nottingham, where he has reached the final of the singles event. In tomorrow's decider he will take on the Norwegian Viktor Durasovic, who is 27 and has a career high singles ranking of no. 298.

What can we hope for in the AO R1 Draper/Navone match? After a great run to the USO SFs, Draper had an abdominal injury in the Japan Open. Then a hip injury prevented his playing the United Cup and Davis Cup.

No luck for Henry Searle against Viktor Durasovic in Nottingham on Saturday, where the Norwegian beat the young Englishman 7-6(6), 3-6, 6-1 in the singles final. Searle had one set point at 6-5 in the first set tiebreak, played very well in the second set, but ran out of steam in the third. He will move up to no. 400 when the new singles rankings are issued after the Australian Open.
