Teen tennis star Robson apologizes for calling players '****s'
By Chris Chase
Laura Robson, the 16-year-old British tennis sensation who won the Wimbledon girls' title in 2008, has apologized for disparaging comments she made to a magazine about the promiscuity of fellow junior players.
Last week it was reported that Robson said to British Vogue:
"Some of the tennis girls, they're ****s. They go with every guy and make such a bad name for themselves — and you don't want to be known for stuff like that. You want to be more discreet."
The comments drew scrutiny from the WTA, which launched an investigation into the quotes. What exactly it investigated is anyone's guess; mine being "nothing." The tour probably said it was investigating because it sounded like a good thing to tell the press. Sounds like something is being done. In reality, all the "investigation" did was extend the shelf life of the story a bit.
Let's remember Robson is 16 years old. I shudder to think at what sort of stupid stuff I'd have said to the press at that age. Although, except for the use of "****s," I don't see too much wrong with the comment other than the fact that you can't say such things to the press. Robson and her people realized this and issued a statement on Wednesday:
"Firstly, I would just like to say a big sorry to anyone that I may have offended in an interview published recently.
"I made a totally inappropriate, throwaway comment without considering the consequences.
"I still have a lot to learn both on and off the court, and clearly I need to be a lot more careful about how silly remarks may come across when taken out of context."
Robson may still not be old enough to drive a car in England, but she's already mastered the art of the non-apology apology and media blame-game. Notice she didn't say sorry for what she said, she merely apologized to anyone who may have been offended by what she said. And then she threw in the out-of-context excuse without ever explaining how "they're ****s" can be misinterpreted to be anything but a comment about the ****tiness of "the tennis girls." That's heady stuff for a 16-year-old.
Between the catty comments and delicate media tiptoe, I'd say Laura Robson is ready for the WTA
