Bronze match?

Being completely honest, is a bronze medal match really worth it for Olympic tennis? Obviously it’s great to represent your country and win any sort of medal, but you’re dragging the two losers from the semifinal into this glorified match to decide who was the slightly better loser. Top guys like Novak and Rafa probably don’t care if they get to it, considering they lose the gold a match early. PCB should care more but after being wiped off the court 3 and 3 by a player that he should be beating, I’m not even sure he’d really wanna compete in it that much.

Save some time and energy and give the medal to the better loser, AKA whoever won the most games in the semifinal, and get it done with imo.

I think that's all there is to it, really. In places like the world cup where they have that third place match it really is pointless, but here you are playing for a medal, for a place on the podium, for something larger than yourself when it comes down to it.

In spite of what you've said, and though the match probably does mean MORE to 'lesser' guys, the fact is that Novak and Rafa have both given it their all in bronze medal matches. Novak even played a very good match against Del Potro in 2012 even though he already had a bronze from Beijing.

Much more meaningful for Pablo. Doesn't do much for Novak's legacy, just another medal for Serbia at that point. Even doubles or mixed gold is better IMO.
novak will be out for blood after PCB uso20
He already settled the score with PCB during RG 2020.

A bronze medal would be some consolation for Novak and he's still in the mixed doubles. :)

Big win for Zverev but we know he can do it in Bo3. Khachanov next.
Zverev's won the YEC and Masters series tourneys. He's making progress in the Slams, but isn't there yet. The next step is to win a Slam.

Zverev played great bro just what we discussed, to beat novak you need to have a great serve, defense and to be able to dictate rallies which Zverev did wonderfully today
Totally agree. The German was sublime. Dominated the points and one of the few players to bully Djoko round the court and he served great. No complaints from me the better man won. I’m happy for him. Sad for Novak but he’ll bounce back. Like I said he’s put in a huge mental effort to win what he has this year. Even if he doesn’t win the us open either or much else this year it’s been a fabulous year. The field is wide open now.

Bronze medals are fine in swimming, athletics and gymnastics but they make no sense in sports where players compete in a h2h format. Really, who wants to play a match after losing the opportunity to win the tournament? It's stupid.

Both semifinalists should be given a bronze medal. That's how it's done in boxing.

Best of 5 still tough to beat him even this match he could have turned it around but impressed by Zverev, his game on hardcourt to me is amazing better than Medvedev according to me, also feel this is his best surface as his game to me is similar to djokovic which is why solid groundstrokes get reward on it

Have to believe that if they meet again in nyc, Djoker will be extra motivated and seeking revenge. At the same time, Zed might have gained confidence.

It's part of the Olympics.

I still hope Djokovic gets his head together and takes it.

Why should PCB be beating Khachanov on a fast surface? He has yet to win a match at Wimbledon, where Khachanov made QFs and was one set away from SFs. Khachanov had beaten Busta on HCs in straight sets their last two meetings.

That is the way it used to be in Olympic Tennis, as the Bronze Medal was shared by the semi finalists.

If PCB wins, he proves the USO wasn't a fluke and brings home a medal, which might be the highlight of his career.

If Nole wins, he proves the USO was a fluke and brings home a medal for Serbia. It's still 5 medals (from all events) for a small country. Not bad at all...

Interesting. I checked and you're right, in the first 3 editions each semifinalist got a bronze medal. Humans are getting dumber, they should've kept it that way.

Yeah Novak will still want a medal. He can be double Olympic bronze winner. That’s still something for him to play for.
Novak could go home with NO medals tomorrow potentially.. if he stinks up the court against PCB then he's not winning that, PCB is highly motivated right now because he's playing for Spain. and in mixed doubles, novak is playing against very tough aussie team with Barty in there...............LOL:laughing::laughing:

I wouldn’t be surprised. I have a feeling Novak may be a bit deflated tomorrow but we will see.

3rd place award for the 3rd best ATG. At least Nadal and Fed were able to snag a Gold in one of the Olympic events they competed in.

If you look at most of the tennis achievements you will find fed or Rafa are in third place much more times than djoker.

In fact from all the big titles and big metrics in tennis being the slams, masters tournaments, olympics, world tour finals, year end no1, weeks at no1, etc the only ones where Djokovic is in 3rd place is the us open and Olympics. Every other tournament or metric he’s first or 2nd out of the big 3 in achievements. Right now the third wheel overall certainly isn’t Djokovic.

You can have it for the olympics though.
