Interesting quotes from Alexander Bublik before his R1 match against Defending Champion Andy Murray - laying the bait here ;)

Andy Murray's 'lucky loser' opponent Alexander Bublik is a self-proclaimed joker, showboater, risk-taker and part-time rapper all in one.

The 20-year-old right hander with two Eminem tattoos confesses that watching the likes of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal bores him: 'They're rallying for, like, 45 shots, you're sitting there thinking: "Can I quit tennis please?"'

And that when 6-2, 5-2 up in the past, he has started playing with his left hand for the fun of it, or decided to try to win by only using trick shots.

It is that unpredictability which he hopes will leave world No 1 Murray guessing.

'I don't even know what I'm going to do,' said Bublik. 'I decide when the ball is coming, I decide right before I hit it. I don't have a plan. I serve wide then I play cross-court. I serve wide then a drop-shot or a lob, whatever.

I never had idols in my life. I never watched anyone play. If you ask me how many titles Federer has won, I will not know.

'Last year I was only doing trick shots. Even if I was playing against good guys, top 100 or whatever, I wasn't interested. I would make 100 drop shots to try to win the match.

The funny thing is that both Federer and Nadal try to avoid 45-shot rallies as much as possible nowadays - he must have them confused with Monfils & Simon :D
monfils and simon lack the shot selection or even power of nadal/fed. with monfils he gives you a hope of chance that maybe you can win. but with fed/nadal i can see why this guy would want to quit tennis. hundreds of thousands of people are watching you get outplayed and there is nothing you can do about it.

LMFAO! Is Bublik the man behind the 90s clay moniker? Younger Nadal understandable. Federer 45 shot rallies?

He probably watched their exho matches and came to this conclusion. Or he's 90's Clay, a a sad Pete fan who hated Federer for breaking the 14 Slam record, and now Nadal for the same reason. :D

Typical I-Gen...thinking I am so cool because I am so different...if he keeps doing that, he will learn that no one will respect him because the world thinks he is a fool. When he hits 40, he will become a grumpy old man because he wasted his youth trying to be cool and not getting anywhere.

LOL. Sampras would beat them both.
Who cares if Nadal has a slight edge on clay or Federer has a slight edge on one surface? Pete has a HUGE ADVANTAGE everywhere else.

(mockery is a key ingredient in this post)

This guy sounds like these annoying jaded teens in the movie. " yeah, whatever, I don't care.I don't even have an idol because I'm so not like the other teens, the are so happy it makes me puke".

Too bad it was Nadal or/and Federer who took part in the 7 first important finals of the year. Why doesn't this guy come and entretain us.

So he says he never watched anyone play but watching the likes of Fedal bores him?

Lol. I swear I read Bublik as Gulbis with all the "u" and "i" before I clicked into the thread as he too once said Fed, Rafa and Novak all were boring.

I prefer Djokovic over both but they are not boring at all.

Federer is incredibly versatile. From all areas of the court with any shot he can produce magic. Don't know what Bublik was smoking when he said that Fed is rallying for 45 shots.

Nadal's defense is quite irritating but at his best the guy is an insane shotmaker. Played a part in several unforgettable matches. Gotta appreciate that.

I guess he's ok with his comments. Reading at the context where he's coming from, I'm bored myself sometimes when the Big 4 play ping pong, so I can understand that coming from a non-fan; not surprised. If he can back up his mouth and get to a decent rank and be a regular on tour with his kind of game - the variety, trick shots and anything else, I wouldn't mind seeing some variety and fun.

Bublik is boring. Useless game that could hardly beat a sheep. Will never amount to anything. THAT is boring.

Nadal-Djokovic, Nadal-Murray and especially Murray-Djokovic matches are boring, but never with Fed.
He's not trying to outlast his opponents.

And Nadal seems like he changed his style, too.

More entertaining to watch these days.

Hey, tennis needs some new characters with a, ahem, character who nevertheless aren't complete douches. Maybe Bublik is the guy?

while i can't -of course- disagree with captain bublvious as regards the uncontested and unparalleled boringness of the rusty peak injured golden bull, i'm not sure having "two eminem tattoos" places him at the best place to make such a statement...

The only boring player on tour is Troicki. FACT. ;) Viktor is probably the player I know least about when it comes to patters of play, weaknesses and strengths, etc, simply because I refuse to watch him play anymore. I can't remember the last time I watched him, will need to check my notes. All I remember from watching Troicki was that it was dull, uninspiring and nothing in his game stood out.

Edit: No, I watched him play Cuevas at MC this year. Can't even remember that match.

Somdev Devvarman for me.

It's so weird, my notes say I've watched Troicki play a few times in the past year or so, and I remember a few of them slightly, but I can't recall how he plays/played. What he does well, etc. I know he has a good defensive slice forehand, that's about it. The only player that does this to me, makes me forgot his whole game. So strange...

He's most notable for his big serve. Otherwise, I can't think of anything remarkable in his game. He had some great matches, though, 2010 Tokyo SF agianst Nadal (had two match points in the final tie-break, one on his serve), and he had Đoković on the ropes at the USO 2010, was a break up in the fourth set after being two sets to one up, but couldn't hold his nerves.

BTW don't forget how many of us sometimes say X player is boring... and we ain't no Bublik in the tennis scene.
Yes, and if we were to broadcast our bêtise in public press conferences, it would be even less newsworthy.

Luckily most of us are constrained to bandy our pet follies back and forth in anonymous web forums with fellow plebeians instead.

Why do you take notes?

Why do you take notes?
It's become a habit over the years. I did it at first so I could just look back at a specific match if my memory became hazy, see what happened and look at any stats if I'm interested. These days I take notes for every match I watch. It's very anal of me, I know.

You're either his fan, enjoy watching him, or can't stand him and STILL watch all his matches.

Wrong. There's another option: you like Rafa but don't watch his matches because of the time wasting and 30 seconds between each point. That drives many, many people crazy. Nobody who can't stand him watches his matches, believe me.

It's not something I could do without an ulterior motive. For example if I was betting on tennis and the notes gave me an advantage in picking winners. I find the players form is so dependent on their mood on a given day I'm not sure it would help.

Don't mind attitude as long as it's paired with some serious game. Otherwise it's the usual chihuahua millenials barking, trying way too hard.

To be fair, the context was that he'd rather play tennis than watch tennis, and with only so many hours in the day the tennis he watches is often his peers as he finds it more interesting. Yes, there was the point about the long rallies, but I got the impression that it was all a bit other-wordly for him, so less relevant than the people who he expects to be playing more.

People are reading too much into his comment.

I don't mind his comments (I welcome them in fact, I don't like players kissing each other's asses, in that regard I prefer WTA) but you have to back up the smack talk. The "characters" in tennis are rememberd because they could perform on the big stage in addition to their "controversial" personalities. Of course he's 20, so we'll see in the future.

I don't believe you. I see even Nadal haters and hyper Federer fans watching Nadal matches all the time, more so than I do.

I could never blame an ATP pro for voicing his opinion.

I disagree this time, but I'll get banned in an attempt to defend it.

y'all should quit yammering, we need more vocal idiots on tour, not more boring uninteresting nothing-sayers.
