I think the problem with the OP and others who discount Bud Collins is, is that they're young and don't know anything about his history.
Bud Collins NOW, if you didn't know any better, sure, you'd probably think he's some random senile idiot that ESPN threw on TV. But he's on there for a reason, kids. He's one of the all-time great historians of tennis, and has been on the American tennis scene for decades. Go read his Wikipedia article for more information.
Perfect example of this phenomenon of ignoring a man's history: If you were to listen to Ralph Kiner, the NY Mets announcer who's largely retired now but occasionally appears in the Mets booth, you'd think he can barely talk. I've heard people listen to Kiner who didn't know who he was, and they've said, "Wow, get this old guy out of the booth, it's embarrassing." But for decades, he was insightful, witty, and a truly good and kind man....all class. A great announcer who's a legend in Mets history. Not to mention one of the great baseball sluggers of all time.
Learn the history of people, kids, before judging them.....
