Building a stand for a tabletop - how high?

Hi all!

I recently acquired a tabletop drop weight stringer for a very reasonable price.

I am building a stand to set it on, but I don't know how tall to build the stand.
I was going to just guess and keep adding layers of wood until it felt comfortable, but I
figured why do that when I've got all the expertise in the world right here?

Could some of y'all measure how high the racket face is off the ground when mounted on your stand up machines and post it here?

Stand up machine has height adjustment to vary height depending on stringers. It's a personal thing.
I am 6' tall, and if you are different height, you may want something different.
I have mine set where the turn table is set at my elbow when I stand next to the machine as that is my comfort zone.

I have my machine set so that the string bed (face of the racquet, in your terms) is around the height of my elbow. Perhaps slightly above elbow height, to prevent having to bend over too much while weaving crosses.

Wow Jim, that seems quite high.
If the turn table is near your elbows, where does that actually end up putting the string bed on you?
Nipple high? Armpit high?

Well, I guess I should have said the top of the table the part that holds the racquet, the 6 points that holds the racquet is at elbow height.
The bottom of table is at my wrist height when arms are down at side.

I suggest you set it at a height where you minimise (or eliminate) any necessity to lean over the string bed.

My old stringer came with the stock stand. I used it a few times that way no problems. Then I needed to move the machine. Rather than carry it, I placed it on a small heavyweight trolley on largish wheels. This lifted the machine by about 6 inches. I thought I'd try stringing a racquet with the machine on the trolley. I found it much more comfortable to do it that way and 150 racquets later, I haven't looked back (pardon the pun!)

While you’re building a table make it adjustable that way if you get the wrong height it is easier to correct. Try to get the table high enough so the string bed is 4” under your elbow with an 8” adjustment.

That's what I would suggest as well. Even higher than elbow does my back better. I would almost say nipple line/ mid chest. The more straight up you can stand while working, the better your back and neck will feel IMO.

Gamma makes stands for its X-ELS and Progression stringing machines as accessory for $139 plus shipping. They are reportedly adjustable in height. It may be easier to buy a stand like this and modify it as necessary (drill extra holes in the top plate, or attach a piece of plywood to create a surface for your stringing machine) than to design and build an adjustable stand yourself.

You can build a very nice cabinet which doubles as a stand, with drawers for supplies and such, but this requires work. I was considering such project myself, but my wife nixed it. Instead, I built a cart on lockable wheels for my tabletop. It now lives under the dining table when not in use.

I just put my machine on the dining table for stringing. It is a little low, but OK for a racquet or two. If you need a slightly higher level, you can build a lifter from a couple of 2x6.

stapletonj, one more idea for you. You could build a work table for stringing using height adjustable legs. This will enable you to dial in any height you need. There are many options when it comes to height adjustable legs. I recently built a desk for a flight simulator using "HON B4LEGT1" set of legs. They are about $70 for a set of 4.
You could design a table with drawers or shelves to store your tools and supplies under the stringing machine.

Just wanted to offer an idea... It works very well with legs which can be adjusted in a wide range with 1 inch step.

actually kind of following in your footsteps. got four adjustable table legs from ikea for $4 each. got two lockable roller caster wheels for $3 each.
(2 wheels, two not wheels to make for easy moving about the house)

did some measuring and figure an 8 inch tall box will put the stringbed right at elbow level.

so, I figure I'l have less than $30 in it, but have an even better stand that Gamma's for 1/4 the price....

Any chance you could post some photos? I found some $4 ikea table legs but they weren't adjustable.
