A three-man independent tribunal has handed Frenchman Nicolas Coutelot a two-month suspension from the ATP Tour after he tested positive for a metabolite of cannabis or tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) after a qualifying match for the Vina del Mar tournament in February this year.

Under World Anti-Doping Code, cannabis is listed as a "specified substance" and use of a specified substance can carry a minimum penalty of a warning through to a maximum penalty of a one-year suspension.

The tribunal comprising: Canadian Yves Fortier, Doctor Eduardo De Rose of Brazil and Swiss Professor Martial Saugy determined that the 27-year-old, committed a doping violation under the rules of the Tennis Anti-Doping Program. The independent tribunal, which heard evidence on 2 August.

The trio determined that Coutelot should receive a two-month suspension from any ATP or Challenger Series event or other activity authorized or organized by the ATP.

The use of cannabis in this case was determined by the tribunal to not be for performance enhancing reasons.

This being the case, what business is it of theirs to suspend him if he uses cannabis for personal reasons? Are there tests for cocaine, which I'm sure is also used by a few of these rich tennis pros.

Yeah... I was wondering about that right away when the item mentioned cannabis... umm... Would residents of certain nations be exempt from all this? :P

I just thought the WADA only had a role in performance enhancing drugs. Somehow they've thrown themselves into a much more gray area I think.

In fact... I'd think some recreational drugs would have performance debilitating effects... weaker lungs, lack of focus, e-****ation, munchies, snot drizzles (instead of snot rockets), light sensitivity, allergies, etc... :P

Maybe they feel they must regulate the use of this drug because it is illegal in virtually every country in the world and it is called the World Anti-Doping Code. A 2 month suspension sounds very reasonable.

What a total waste of time and effort.

So get off the guy's case then! Anyways, Coutelot should be suspended for simply being dumb enough to get caught. Doesn't take long (perhaps a week of not smoking) for athletes with an already low body fat percentage to clear themselves of THC. And that's without even using cleaning agents.

I've known a few people who smoked dope and it really did not enhance their performance at all.

I know a few tournament players who swear by light drinking before matches to calm them.... besids a couple joints work for Guga and Fed....better than Roddick's pre match amphetamines.....;-)

Hey Data! Didn't Noah once profess to having a choof before one match? I know he said he had sex in the locker room before one match and played une match fantastic.

I heard sex the night before competition can hinder sport performance, but I also heard otherwise. I haven't really experienced any difference in performance, but quite pleased the night before otherwise

Well no surprise!!! hehehe, it's a big big saying in boxing that if you have sex leading up to fights your legs or chin go. I'm not convinced.

Heh, I heard the rumours about Noah but I dont' have any inside knowledge to confirm those! Seems in character though doesn't it? ;-)

I know that one morning after a night with an especially talented girl I assumed I was going to be way sub par given lack of sleep....but instead I found to my amazement a relaxed, Fed/Sampras like zoned performance...I knew I had found the secret....alas it has not worked for me again...lol. Maybe I need to get back together with that particular ex!
