Buying a 100K+ German luxury car!

I been looking at buying a midsize top end high performance SUV and they have depreciated like mad! Original was going buy a brand new one. But just feels like I should just buy a 10 year old one after shopping for over three weeks now! I am talking Cayenne
turbo and Turbo S, ML63, X5M. Did not go with Jeep Hellcats because interior is not there. Audi RSQ7 and SQ7 did not like the look of the exterior. Range Rover Sports seem to have lots of problems in the SVR and Autobiography models. The 100K+ mileage cars are now 60-80% of a brand new model! I felt that having a sport car and utility vehicle all in one is what I want! I do not like the look of the Tesla X either!

What is your opinion of the 100+K performance SUV vehicles? Which one would you recommend and why?

I looked at some of the above with my ex brother in law just a bit ago. He ended up in an Audi R8 Spyder. Midlife crisis and too much money to spend in my opinion. For me, I LOVED the Cayenne for a abalnce between refined luxury and performance (more toward luxury). But...when I was buying my wife a 2019 Traverse last year I happened over the the Hyndai dealer to look at the new Santa Fe and spent about half the day checking out the Genisis G90. Now, I can't say it is absolutely comparable to Porsche quality in the long run, but driving it for a bit I can say it sure as hell felt well built, well appointed, and very capable. I think it was in the $80k range, so a bit of cost savings.

Just throwing it out there.

Maintenance and repairs on these cars is really expensive, so I would look carefully into what years and models hold up the best. It's bad enough to be stranded on the side of the 405 in your Cayenne, but it's the repair bills that could lead to the Stop Breakin' Down Blues.

I bought a $115K 2008 Porsche Cayenne Turbo with 56K miles on it for like $30K. It was an absolute massive MONEY PIT. OMG. I loved the car though, it was a BEAST! 500hp is so awesome. It cost a fortune in gas as it only got 13-15 mpg and required premium. SO many things went wrong with that car. It was in the shop at least 4 times in a year with expensive issues each time. Unless you just want to throw you money down the toilet, you would be a fool to think you are not going to spend a small fortune on an older luxury SUV. Stick to a Toyota or Lexus. Save the headache and the money. You have been warned.

Do you still have the Cayenne? If not, how did you get rid of it? What did you end up receive for it? What car did you buy afterward?

I can't say I have the money to afford the cars you are talking about, nor the knowledge. However, I did recently buy a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee with all the bells and whistles and stuff. I had a 2012 same model before.

Not once did I ever have to repair anything major except brakes and tire stuff. The new one was in the 50k range and in my opinion, looks and drive just as good as the luxury models I test drove for fun.

No I traded it in once ANOTHER dash light came on and it was still worth something. I had just bought a house further away from my job and it was going to cost over $5k in gas just to drive it that year so I got a loaded Toyota XSE V6 with 301 HP. It was the most fuel efficient V6 (26/36) and has plenty of power when you need it. I do often miss the Cayenne... only in winter though. Trade in value was down right laughable and I had to fight like hell just to get them to give me close to what I wanted on it. They knew it was a money pit too.. Overall, it was a huge mistake buying that stupid thing. Yes it was fun but I lost so much money in a year driving it. Only buy something like that if you do not like holding on to your money. My mechanic brother in law warned me.. I didn't listen.. I paid dearly.. It WILL happen to you too!

Oh! Hope not! Maybe you got a bad Cayenne Turbo? I do not drive that many miles in a years time. I already have two cars and just adding on. You maybe right, but the thought of a high performance SUV is pretty desirable enough with potential high maintenance and repairs. I guess I have to experience what you experience to move on and away from this desire. Thanks for sharing your experience.

What I would have done is to test drive the cars you thinking about properly!
Some like the feeling of an Audi another one BMW, and some here seem to like Toyota a lot.
To take too much advice from others in car buying often not so smart. Its you who is going to drive it :)

Your rant is a typical one for someone that buys something he doesn't know what it is, and not because of the "disappointments", but for the vast level of delusion (or intentional bad-mouthing) associated with what you are buying.

The fuel consumption of the car is almost spot on to what the automaker gives, so why are you complaining about it? Did you expect it to become more fuel efficient than Ford Focus or something? You are also comparing a Bi-Turbo V 8 motor with 500HP with a 300HP V6.

You compare a 2008 car with what is supposedly around 2017 or newer car?

You bought what is a 10 years old performance car and you wonder that you had to do some repairs? Did you service the car in an official service center? They run full computer diagnostic any time you are there for even moderate issues and can identify any underlying problems (which costs significantly less to take care of than to wait something to get broken).

BTW, it would be interesting to list the issues that the car had.

I knew EXACTLY what I was getting into. The gas wasn't a surprise I budgeted for that. it was the $8K in repairs that I had done at either the Porsche dealership or a certified Porsche repair center that only repaired Porsche. They were both expensive. Actually the dealership helped me out way more than the other place. I didn't get a bad one. It might not have had another issue after these repairs but I wasn't willing to wait around and find out. I also had a scan tool for it and it had another big problem before I sold it and I cant quite remember the exact code. It was not good though.

Some of the repairs.
Drive Shaft
Cardan Shaft rubber plate x2
Thermostat
Starter
Battery
Vacuum leaks galore.
Brakes x2 in ONE YEAR
hydraulics burst for Active chassis control. that was expensive as hell to fix. and the dealership had it for 17 days.
(The pump for that thing whined SO LOUD it was terrible. it was "normal" though.)

The ignition coils would have been not far behind.

Transmission shifted like crap from 4th to 5th. Unless you kept it in Sport and turned off traction control it was alway in too tall of a gear.

I loved that car though.. it was by far the most fun car I have ever owned or driven. I just hated throwing money at it.

My daily driver is a Cayenne hybrid plug in. It has been buggy and is about to go out of warranty in a few months. That has me concerned.

No one is comparing a Toyota and Lexus to a Porsche.. The Porsche is far superior in performance and Craftsmanship. Hell the AC vent fins on mine were leather wrapped! I am just trying to tell the guy to be warned if he wants to have a money pit and waste time and energy dealing with an expensive, used luxury vehicle to be warned. I didn't know it was going to have THAT many issues or I would have done a hard pass. I guess I was just not truly willing to accept the expense. So what. I doesn't take away from the fact that a Porsche is NOT like a Toyota/Lexus.. a Toyota/Lexus is actually very reliable and a Porsche is NOT. No ands ifs or buts about it. They simply aren't. They are way over engineered and they drive amazing. Oh well. If the guy or whoever has the money they can spend it on whatever the hell they want. I don't give a crap. I am sharing MY story and I can imagine that my experience can save some poor guy who was looking to enjoy a used luxury SUV for little money but then realized they break worse than a Toyota/Lexus and they cost a fortune to fix. It was fun having it.. It was a relief getting rid of it. BUH-BYE.

Yes, you are 100% correct in your statement: "if you are looking for a "reasonable" car a Porsche is not it. It requires more expenditure for which the owner is rewarded with top performance."

It's just too bad that a vehicle that is that expensive couldn't have been more reliable to begin with. If Lexus made a $115K SUV.. It probably would last a LONG time. Probably be slow too.

I should have just simply said: Just simply be prepared to spend 5-8% of the vehicles original cost in repairs each year. Which probably isn't more percentage wise than most vehicles.

Also check this video out on the 2008 Cayenne Turbo in his costs.

If performance and the whole driving experience is important to you, I’d go with the Alfa Stelvio Quadriofoglio. Luxury, there’s no going wrong with Bentayga, or Range Rover Vogue( but as you said Range rovers are notorious for reliability issues) if bentayga is too expensive. And a mixture of the two, has got to be the X7 M Sport or the X5 M depending on what size you want.
