Cal Bears

did you see how bad we beat Washington? The final four is doable. Remember we beat Duke.

"best win does not a season make" - sun tzu (probably)

and stanford beat UW also, beating the huskies doesn't exactly prove final four quality

if cal makes it to the final four i'll post a youtube link of myself eating a rubber shoe sole - they're likely not going to be top 16 and hosting a regional, so they'll need to pull an upset of some degree to even make it to illinois

Wrong, the Final Four is not doable. Cal has played a Final Four caliber team four times this year, and is 0-4 against them. Throw in Pepperdine and Duke, and they're 1-5, although Duke and Pepperdine will have to spring upsets to get to the Final Four.

Like mike said, the Bears will have to pull an upset just to get to Illinois, not to mention win two more matches against teams ranked higher than Cal to get to the semis. There is nowhere to hide in the Round of 16, Washington won't be there. This also isn't college basketball. The teams at the top almost never lose to teams ranked more than about 5 spots below them.

If you think this way it is what will happen. The Bears believe though, trust me they believe. Do not be shocked at a final four run.

I think we will get sent to Pepperdine. If we do I think we can beat the waves. I am not sure where else they would send us? Surely they would not send us to the south would they?

what do you tournament experts think?

They could send you to Oklahoma or Texas A&M. That'd be my guess...between Stanford, Washington and Cal, one goes to Pepperdine, one to Oklahoma, and one to TAMU. Although, no rule against sending you to a conference opponent. The committee frequently sends Wake to Charlottesville (won't this year though).

Can someone tell me about Florida State. It looks like they are a deep focused team. How do we match up?

in two meetings, duke hasn't lost a singles match to them

considering you think Cal is better than Duke, and a serious contender to make the final 4, they should have no trouble :)

but seriously, cal is the better team - i would expect a 4-2 semi close match but not a match that comes down to a few points

Cal played pretty well today. 3 dubs was shakey at best, 1 dubs got outplayed, and cotrone really had great energy throughout the day and winning at 1. Campbell Johnson looked very sharp, bageling Jordan Kelly Houston, before a small lull in the second. Match at 5 was pretty boring..FSU guy didn't create enough offense, didn't grind or run well, and got outcompeted. I would have a hard time seeing Cal lose tomorrow. Florida just did not show up in any way. #3 singles essentially tanked and #6 was miserable. Denver treated it like life or death and UF's attitude was mush. Credit to Coach Westerman. Anyhow, Cal should easily win doubles. 1 will be a good match and I think Cal will also win down low easy.

Being a little flippant because it always seems the same for Cal: no real blue chippers going to the school. But I checked out Bergevi and saw that he had beaten McLachlan and that's a good sign because when I saw McLachlan on streaming video play in the Napa Challenger I was not impressed. So if Bergevi plays one. That's a step up and it's no longer a disaster, but I still have my doubts about five and six in the order.

Hasier Pastor is another new addition to the roster and he lost in the 2nd round of the Tiburon qualies to former Florida #2 Greg Ouellette 6-7 6-2 6-4.

All Cal final in the Battle in the Bay - Campbell Johnson vs. Andre Goransson. I think Cal will be in the thick of things this year with McLachlan, Bergevi, Johnson, Goransson, Pastor, Bayane, Engsted, and company.

Cal team did well in the Battle of the bay classic. Not sure what they ate ? I thought Cardinal were the stronger squad. hopefully they can prove that in dual meets next year.

poor showing for the USC squad ... but then again they didn't send Sarmiento,Hanfmann ,Quiroz,Wang, and Grant..

epaige, have to ask about Nolan. Very slow start this year as opposed to last year, any ideas why?

SoCal10s, but Johnson losing to Tsodikov, that was a shocker, if you ask me.

yeah E.J.'s been having a lousy fall season, maybe just slump ,he hardly ever loses to Tsodikov ,they must have met each other a dozen times already..

it's going to interesting how Peter Smith is going play all of his players this coming year ..Sarmiento,Hanfmann ,Quiroz,Wang,Grant,Johnson,de Vroom,Crystal,Bellamy,Farren and most likely some other new foreign recruits .

Mississippi State first up. This matchup is favorable to the Bears. I expect a 4-0 or 4-1 win. And I think Virginia could be in for a surprise too. UVA hasn't played anyone with a pulse yet this season.

Cal vs Mississippi State

I don't know much about how the doubles teams match up. Help?

singles matchup and predictions.

1: McLachlan vs Lakat: Ben should be able to breakdown the freshy.
Cal in 2

2: Johnson vs Stropp: Slight edge to the German man.
Miss State in 3

3: Bergevi vs Angus: Angus more expereince but just too much of a talent gap. Bergevi easy.
Cal in 2

4: Goransson vs White: I have no idea

5: Bayane vs Agarwal: Bayane should easily win
Cal in 2

6: Engsted vs Schmidt: C;mon is this even a question? Mads will barely break a sweat.

Looking forward to facing Virginia.

Yes the Cal Bears can take it. I still remember that insult a Virginia fan on here gave me.

UVA won 4-0 and did not lose a set. UVA was ahead in games won by 66-21 in singles play when the match was called. It lasted less than two hours.

UVA has a very good team and no foreigners in its top 12 players.

I love teams and coaches that believe in american tennis players, and allow them to shine. Go UVA!!

In the p1c 12 I think the Bears are even with UCLA and USC as the top 3 teams. There is a small difference and the 3 teams are on even footing.

The early season is the most fun time for delusional thinking. It is much harder to engage in this optimism in late April, although I was deluded into thinking that UVa was about to win the NCAAs for four years in a row in late April and USC won all four times.

UVa showed up at the NTI in not so great form, yet dominated Cal pretty badly. I find it very hard to believe we would have disposed of USC or UCLA in the same fashion at that tournament.

I cannot wait until the Bears get their crack at the Bruins and the Trojans.

And by crack, you mean, you must be on it right? Because the way I see it, the bears won't get a single team point on the bruins OR the trojans. 7-0, calling it now for both teams to take out Cal when y'all head down to So Cal.

I'll take take that bet all day long bro. I think your Southern California princes are in for some surprises when the Bears come roaring into town.

i just see it from the results point
Cal has 2 losses so far, 0-4 vs Virginia and 2-4 vs Texas

vs UVA, Cal not win a single set....they just were blown away and easily would ve lost 0-7 as i see it. Bergevi, johnson and bayane were blown away by Domijan/R.Shane/Kwiatkowski
vs Texas, Cal took the doubles point but never had a really chance in singles.

okay, all was indoors, cal maybe is more an outdoor team, who knows, but these results show a lot.

Texas had a chance to beat Ohio State,so this loss vs Texas was okay for Cal
but not getting any set vs Virginia, just showed..they ve not top5 talent...
