Call for a Ban on Andy Murray?

How can Murray be so ignorant and not come to Marseille?!

It's not ignorant. If he and his team decided that he needed more time to recover then he has every right to withdraw within the rules. He has Dubai, IW, Miami on his schedule and clay coming up. I have no idea what his current physical condition is (has he posted anything on his website?) and they may not want to reveal that there are any issues. It sucks that he has withdrawn from this same event 2 years in a row.

I'm sure there have been many phone calls to both parties this morning. While it is possible the initial story was exaggerated or even fabricated, this whole situation just looks bad.

Yeah you can understand why the director isn't happy about it, unfortunately though it happens with alot of the players. To just punish Murray for it wouldn't be right.

Andy Murray has been slammed by a French tennis tournament boss who has called for him to be suspended.

World No 3 Murray, due to be top seed in this week’s Marseille Open, has pulled out to give himself more time to recover from the Australian Open, in which he was runner-up to Roger Federer.

That has angered Marseille organiser Jean-Francois Caujolle who said: “Murray did the same thing to me last year. He can’t know what it is to keep his word. A week ago, he asked me for a wild card to play doubles with his brother Jamie and I gave him one. A few days ago, he asked me for five hotel rooms and I gave him them.

“The No 1 seed of a tournament should have a sense of responsibility. If he does not respect his commitments, he should be suspended by the ATP.”

I don't know about suspension but he should be fined.

Murray can't be punished, he withdrew according to the rules that he signed on to, but his behavior and the behavior of the TD making it public (and probably assuring Murray will never return) are equally bad. Makes me wonder how other players feel about this TD saying things like this regardless of how they feel about Murray.

When a player does something outlandish and stupid in public, for all to see, of course a TD might say something. If a player is stupid enough to bad mouth a TD publicly, the TD has every right to respond, but this happened behind closed doors and it should be kept there. It's a no win situation and everybody looks bad (in my opinion).

Yeah, but Murray just spit in his face and walked away. No one was gonna reprimand him and the TD couldn't just take that. He's not just disrespecting him but his whole team and the fans. Considering the no rules disrespect of Murray, I think it was a classy response to a direct insult.

We actually have no idea what really transpired between Murray and the TD, not sure how much I trust the Daily Express to report facts without sensationalism. The TD should have been the bigger man and kept it private. He could have called any Board Member if he had genuine concerns with Murray's behavior.

Sport in brief: ATP backs Andy Murray in Marseilles fatigue row

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/more_sport/article7028270.ece

Tennis Andy Murray, the world No 4, was within his rights to withdraw from this week’s Open13 tournament in Marseilles through fatigue, the ATP Tour said yesterday, despite criticism from Jean-François Caujolle, the tournament director. Caujolle initially said that he thought Murray should face a suspension but retracted his comments, saying that he was frustrated to lose his No 1 seed six days before the event.

Maybe an expansion for Modern Warfare 2(too early for a full sequel)came out already so Murray's busy? If that's so then it's understandable.

of course it was within his rights. But is left out of this with his image screWed?Murray is.He should have talked better with th TD I think the problem here was manners and communication.Other big players have withdraw from this same tourny and yet the TD has said nothing, perhaps murray's behaviour was really bad.

Stop looking for hair-thin excuses for Murray's behavior.

He probably did not feel ready last year, either. He knows his condition, so it was pointless for Murray to make a commitment he had no intention of keeping...and before you consider posting "how do you know he had no intention of keeping it?" He's just established a pattern with this year's withdrawal, and as a result, deserved the criticism he's now receiving.

Twice is a pattern? Sorry, but you're reaching. He made a commitment months ago. How was he supposed to know how he would feel a week before Marseille? Think things through. You are basically suggesting that Murray is pulling out to spite the tournament.

Even the TD has calmed down and isn't blaming Murray. Meanwhile you, being an idiot, continue to whine as if Murray has just banged your mother. Grow up, mate.

You are scheduled to work on president day but you call sick so you can have a three day weekend.

Was it within your rights? Yes.

Did you screw your coworkers? Yes.

Just because something is within your rights doesn't mean that's the right thing to do.

It has nothing to do with Murray behaving badly. He's pissed because Andy pulled out last year too. It's just an unfortunte coincidence, unless you think Murray is just trying to spite the tournament.

There's a difference between calling in sick because you're sick and calling in sick because you want to blow off work. Murray cited fatigue.

And no, calling in sick for a 3 day weekend is not within your rights. Pretty sure your employer will confirm that fact.

This is the second year in a row Murray made a commitment to play that French tournament, then pulled out. I can understand why the tournament director is irked.

Maybe Murray should take Nadal's example, who travels to the venue and personally apologizes to the tournament director. Murray should have done that, and paid up for the hotel rooms which were booked in advance for him.

Now that he is #3 in the World, I guess he should start acting as a brand ambassador for the support. Just as Federer and Nadal have been doing for a while.

As others have noted, a suspension is a bit much. But I like Tennis Fan's assessment.

Surprised that Serena Williams has not been mentioned. She has done this numerous times -- several times at the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford alone. Venus has played the BOW Classic several times. Serena has committed to play a number of times but has only shown up once (2009) to my knowledge. In past years, her image has appeared on brochures, buses, in the newspaper and other advertisements when she agreed to play.

When a top marquee player pulls out of a smaller tournament, it's bad news for the tournament. I noticed that Serena's image was used in the 2009 advertisements, but she was in the background rather than the foreground. I guess that the tournament directors had been burned so many times by Serena, they decided to put her in the background while minor marquee players were placed in the foreground.

I don't believe that Serena has ever stuck around or shown up at all when she has pulled out. Not a class act. Lindsay Davenport, on the other hand, had to pull out of the BOW Classic due to an injury but she still showed out to promote the tournament, conduct interviews, sign autographs and participate in some tournament events. Sure, she gets a small portion of the appearance money for showing up (and promoting) that she would have received for playing. However, I don't believe that she really needs that money all that much. She does it 'cuz she is a class act who does the best to honor her commitments.

yeah right Clydey like we don't know what this means.Murray is not really injured or sick he decided against playing in this tourny because it occured to him that he has not much to gain pointwise and it's better to follow Fed's lead.
And Murray DID behave irresponsible, anyway you want to spin it it IS reckless behaviour.NOW,is murray the only one who does that??hardly.

This is the reason that it suprises me the TD decided to come out to the press.Logically Murray must have done something over the top to angry a TD so much that he will go against this unwritten rule because I dont' remember any other TD doing this recently.

The TD came out and criticised Murray because he pulled out of the tournament two years in a row, not because Murray did something over the top. In fact, the TD has already taken back his remarks.

I don't see you whining when Federer does it.

instead of focusing on the TD, think about the fans who had already bought tickets ? They must be *****d!

"Yeah I know. Murray is not exactly a fan favorite in Paris as well. Doubt they would cheer for him no matter Marseille. They don't like British."

They'd love Murray, warts and all, if he was French.

What are you 10 yrs old? Why bring Fed into this? It doesn't matter what the other player does...Two wrongs don't make a right.

The TD should not have gone public with his comments, it makes Murray look bad.

I hope as a protest the ATP fine the tournament director and perhaps degrade the tournament (if possible).

I don't see what the big deal is. Obviously the tournament director is pissed to lose the number 1 seed, but Murray didn't break any rules. Suddenly it's "poor form" to withdraw from a tournament, even if you do it in a timely fashion?

A mans word is his bond. Rules or no rules you do not make commitments you do not intend to keep.

A mans word is his bond. Rules or no rules you do not make commitments you do not intend to keep.

He did intend to keep it. So whenever a player withdraws from a tournament, they are not honouring their word, no matter what the circumstances are?

You must be a hell of a guy. I imagine you're very reliable, never missed a day at work, or cancelled a social event.

Give me a break. Don't hold people to impossible standards. Hell, don't hold them to standards that you don't even meet.

Its clear Murray had the best intentions and circumstances prevailed. The French TD is clearly a crack pot downing too much red wine at his 4 hour lunch. We need to keep a perspective here. Murray will do well to rise above this, thus further demostrating his intellectual and moral superiority, and say not a word.

Thus it has always been the case, us Brits just have to tolerate the lower life forms as best we can.

With the religious folks shipped to the US, and the criminals to Australia :-), only the best have remained in Great Britain (the only country to call itself great :-))

Seriously, I find the intelligence level of Brits several notches above people from other countries, be it a scientist like Darwin or a salesman I met in the LA airport at the bar. I also find it interesting that the country with the highest IQ people, Hong Kong, was a British colony for a century. Don't know if it means anything, but it was interesting.

Your experience is no coincidence sureshs.

When we export our undesirables, the average IQ's of both countries increases. Who else would have accepted them?

Mind you, generally the US and Australia are nicer places to live than much of the UK, but having the live with the locals is quite off putting.

Apologies for going off topic, but any posts observing the greatness of GB, UK, etc must be given space in all and any threads.

You're right. My comment was assuming that it was true. Thanks.

Y'all are smart. But you're also full of yourselves. It cancels out.

What we need are quality Brits spreading out across the world. Not as colonizers this time, but just as progressive, enlightened folks.

The hilariously predictable anti-Murray vitriol is truly something to behold on this forum.

I remember when I first came here last year hoping to find a tennis forum where grown-ups actually have a chance to discuss tennis matters properly. Now I just come here to laugh at you kids (apart from one or two of you who seem to separate themselves from the bandwagon).

I read the first 3 pages of this thread and haven't laughed so much in a long time. Talk about sheep leading the sheep...

instead of focusing on the TD, think about the fans who had already bought tickets ? They must be *****d!

Judging by the patterns on this forum, no one would ever buy tickets just to see that pusher Murray, especially not in France where they have so many stylish players. Right?

Maybe he just needs more time to catch up on all the time he lost playing his video games during AO... OUCH!!!
