Calling all polyester gurus

Really could use some help/direction on which poly could potentially be my next string of choice.

Level of play: Collegiate player
Frame being used: Yonex AI 98

List of strings I've tried up until now and my general thoughts regarding each.

1. Cyclone
Power: Slightly above RPM Blast, less than BHB7. Would call it slightly about average for a polyester.
Control: Very good control, never felt like the ball would sail on me.
Spin: Above average spin compared to other poly's.
Feel: This is where the string kind of let me down. Off the stringer, it was crisp but it quickly turns into a string that does not have a very crisp feel. I would call it more plush and dampened once it is broken in. It has a medium stiffness, my arm never felt anything from it.

Edit 12/27/14: The string has the best ball pocketing and feel out of the 3 that have been competing with each other (Focus Hex/BHB7). The power level sits in between Focus Hex and BHB7, a little closer to FH. Its stiffness is also in the middle of FH and BHB7, softer than FH but stiffer than BHB7. I had the best results with this string today in my match in comparison to FH and BHB7. My problems with those 2 strings will be documented below in their respective summaries. My only qualm with Cyclone is the fact that it doesn't have as crisp of a feel and power as I'd like. I am trying the yellow which I heard will not be as crisp, but has more power. I'm curious to know if the yellow will make any difference whatsoever. I also am thinking about bumping my tension from 51 to 54 to possibly get the crisper feel from tightening the string bed.

2. Cyclone Tour -
Power: Very high. One of the highest I've hit with.
Control: Lacking. Balls would sail on me more than usual. This was the deal breaker for me.
Spin: Didn't find spin to be fantastic. Maybe at an average, maybe slightly more. Not enough to get balls to drop inside the lines instead of flying on me.
Feel: Extremely comfortable feel. Low stiffness. Can't pinpoint if it was a crisper or dampened feel. I can't remember. It might have been in the middle between crisp and plush/dampened.

3. V-Star
Power: Very high. Near CT level.
Control: Lacking. Ditto to what I wrote with the CT
Spin: Slightly more than CT, but wasn't able to get enough grab
Feel: Very arm friendly, this string and CT are very similar IMO in terms of feel. I found this to be a little crisper than CT and overall I think I'd take this over CT.

4. BHB7
Power: High, in the realm of CT, V-Star, Tour Bite Soft, etc
Control: Average. Control is accessed through the edges on the string and the overall extreme profile. See Spin section
Spin: One of the best, maybe the best string in spin I've tested. Easy access to spin and I get more of that drop feeling than any other string. I feel like I can swing faster with this string and the ball will still land inside the lines.
Feel: Arm friendly, soft string. Very crisp feel. Some would describe it as plasticky and I can see where they are coming from. It does feel a bit plasticky, but the shape of the string really gives it good feel and connection to the ball IMO.

Edit 12/27/14: This string has a lot of strengths, but I almost feel like in competitive play it just isn't as responsive as I would like. The string just simply does not perform consistently. Even with a fresh string bed, I found that there would be times I wouldn't have a good idea where my balls would go. This would happen mostly when I wanted to drive the ball. It was extremely unpredictable today and I'm really disappointed with this string right now. I thought it was going to be my go-to string, but it didn't hold up. I've also noticed that it's harder to get dialed in on my serve with this string, primarily my flat serve. It still beats a lot of the softer poly's I've tried, but I'm just hesitant to make the switch to it.

5. Focus Hex
Power: Average, slightly around Cyclone level, maybe a tiny bit less.
Control: Above average. Never found myself overhitting with this string. Instead as I've hit with it more, I've realized I'm hitting with less depth and pace.
Spin: Average. Found it to be a tiny less than Cyclone.
Feel: One of the stiffer poly's I've hit with. Has a crisp feel which I prefer over a muted/dampened feel (Cyclone). However, both strings were neck and neck because they had their strengths and weaknesses. The weakness of MSV was the high stiffness causing a lack of feel and ability to get additional dwell time on the string bed. I thought I wasn't able to manipulate the ball as well as I'd like.

Edit 12/27/14: Another disappointing outing with this string. The biggest weakness here is simply the lack of ball pocketing and feel. It just feels too stiff and it results in a lack of connection to the ball. I feel like the ball never really sits on the string bed, rather it just hits my string bed and leaves without any time to manipulate direction or spin of the ball. The power and spin are acceptable, but the big weakness with this string is just the feel. It's crisp and stiff, and not very forgiving.

6. Sonic Pro Edge
Power: Above average, good amount of power.
Control: Average for a poly, decent control. Nothing extraordinary
Spin: Average, around an MSV Focus Hex
Feel: This is a tricky one to write about. I didn't find it was soft, but I didn't find it overly stiff. However, I still found that the string gave me the feedback I usually get when I play stiffer strings. I found that the string bed was a tad unforgiving and when I wasn't striking the sweetspot, I lost a lot of connection to the ball. Dwell time wasn't fantastic with this string. It is a crisp string, which was a plus. If there's such a thing as a demanding string I think this would be slightly demanding. My consistency suffered because of the lack of connection to the ball.

7. RPM Blast
Power: Below average, no free power with this one.
Control: Above average, nothing flew on me.
Spin: Average-slightly above average. Wasn't able to access the spin potential that everyone raves about.
Feel: Didn't like it all too much. Very stiff, similar to an MSV. Lack of connection to the ball. Didn't feel like the string softened up even when I was applying topspin. Harsh wouldn't be a bad word to describe the string. Has a similar feel to Cyclone. Crisp initially, but turns into a dampened/muted string quick.

8. Tour Bite (Played on a Pro Staff 97)
Power: Below average, no free power with this one either.
Control: Very high
Spin: Above average (Couldn't really tell how much extra spin I was getting because I was so annoyed by the feel and lack of power)
Feel: Hated it. Dead and the feeling and was stiff. Had absolutely no feel and touch. Can't recall if it was more crisp or dampened. I'd say in between. Think this string works best for people who have the ability to swing real big and for ones that have the power and spin already in their game.

9. Tour Bite Soft (Have about 10 minutes of hitting with it, so I can't call these opinions/thoughts finalized)
Power: Very high
Control: Below average
Spin: Average-slightly above average
Feel: Did not love it. Feels like a V-Star. Decent spin, but not enough to curtail the liveliness of the string. Very arm friendly. Has more of a crisp feel to it than a dampened one.

10. ALU Power (Pro Staff 97)
Power: Average
Control: Above average
Spin: Average-below average
Feel: Did not like the metallic feel of the string. Average power, but not a ton of spin potential on this one. Felt like it was hitting with a string that lacked feel and comfort. Didn't think it was overly stiff though. Think this is another one of those strings where the player needs to bring a certain game style to the table to reap the rewards of it.

11. ALU Power Fluoro
Power: Average-slightly above average
Control: Average
Spin: Average-below average
Feel: Again, a metallic feel I do not care for. It causes a loss in connection with the ball IMO and it was very similar to ALU Power. Maybe a tiny bit softer, but not to the point that it was a big difference maker. Not overly soft. Spin production was mediocre at best.

12. ALU Power Spin
Power: Average-slightly above average
Control: Average-slightly above average
Spin: Good
Feel: Favorite Lux out of the 3. Metallic feel is still there, but the response is much better. More connected to the ball, can feel the extra spin potential. Feel like the profile of the string serves to act as a buffer between the ball and the harshness of the polyester material. Still thought it was a bit too metallic for my taste, but I thought this was not a bad string. A little loss of connection and slight lack of liveliness IMO.

13. Quadro Twist
Power: Average
Control: Good
Spin: Can't really comment, didn't hit with this one for too long. From what I remember it was average-above average.
Feel: First thing I can think of with this string is its muted and dampened. Does not have a crisp feel to it. I didn't really feel that great of spin potential but maybe I didn't give it long enough of a chance. The string was incredibly soft, very arm-friendly. The power level also didn't wow me.

14. Firestorm
Power: Above average
Control: Mediocre/average
Spin: Not great, not awful. Not surprised because its a round poly
Feel: Didn't get a crisp feel out of this one. Muted/dampened for sure. Soft and arm friendly. Didn't care for this particular string. Good power, lack of feel and connection to the ball.

15. Black Widow
Power: High
Control: Below average-low
Spin: Pretty good. Thought this string possessed spin potential, more than Cyclone Tour and V-Star as well as Tour Bite Soft and Quadro Twist. I'd say #2 in spin potential in terms of soft strings behind BHB7. However, the feel wasn't crisp enough for me. I compared this directly to BHB7 and found that the BHB7 was an overall better string. Black Widow also possessed a little less control than what I like.

Cyclone would be a really good string in that racquet. Its always my go to string. Low powered but has awesome spin. Its average on tension maintenance I would say.

These are my recommendations for a look:

Volkl Cyclone Tour
Head Sonic Pro Edge
Head Lynx
Ytex Quadro Twist

If you're going to stick with gut mains, I'd suggest Luxilon 4g 16l as a potential cross. It's supposed to have longer tension maintenance than an ordinary poly, and it's got a smooth texture so it's not going to cut through the gut like a textured poly might. A ton of pros have been mixing 4g with gut (Williams sisters, Dimitrov, Nishikori to name a few)

I've only ever used a full set of it, but a lot of people prefer it as a hybrid with gut.

Really could use some help/direction on which poly could potentially be my next string of choice.

Level of play: Collegiate player
Frame being used: Yonex AI 98
String setup used in prior frame (Speed Pro): Gut main/Lux ALU cross

Finding that the gut hybrid is dampening the frame's feel even more and there's a really plush feel. Looking to find a polyester to stiffen the frame up just a tiny bit, but keep a very very similar level of pop/power/liveliness as my previous setup.

Have had no success with full polyester in the past. Tried Pro Staff 97 with full poly after finding the gut hybrid to be too powerful. Went with full ALU at 52 and Solinco TB 17 same tension and found both to be underpowered with no liveliness and feel.

Did some intense research on TW and found a few poly's that might fit the bill. Please help comment on each if you've had experience with them. Comparing several would be even better if possible! I welcome all to give me their pitch for their poly of choice. Please only poly's that fit my criteria!

1. Volkl Cyclone
2. Volkl Cyclone Tour
^ Have read/watched TW video and found that people see the difference here as liveliness and feel. Cyclone is stiffer and less powerful. Correct me if I'm wrong here.
3. MSV Focus Hex
4. Dunlop Black Widow
5. Tourna Big Hitter Black 7
6. Volkl V-Star

I considered Polyfibre TCS but apparently the tension maintenance is horrific and worse than even your average poly.
I got this list really from looking at reviews while looking for a good combination of power/control. Most of the power ratings on these strings from TW were high 60's to low 70's with control all being in the high 70s-mid 80s.

I plan on stringing all of these up around 53-54 and will get ~1.25 for each string.

I agree with you, as far as the dampened feel is concerned. I'm currently trying out a gut/poly combo in the Ai98 and it's horrible. Way too powerful, zero spin, and too dampened. Feel completely cut off from the ball.

Try Tourbite 16, 54/52 in it. great string.

I tried Tour Bite before but its too low powered and stiff. I put it in a few frames before and I never felt I got any feel at all. I even tried the 1.20 for the PS 97 when I was swinging that and the frame lost all its power. IMO its a string that needs a ton of user input to be good.

KC, I'm trying to avoid gut mains in this frame.

SpinToWin, I will add Ytex to my list. Got great reviews and seems to have good power for a poly. Not sure about the Lynx since I don't see any TW review. How is it compared to SPE?

Trying Tourna and Sonic Pro Edge tonight. Both will be @53 pounds. Will report

Have Dunlop BW and the 3 Volkl strings coming tomorrow

Will be ordering Y-Tec and MSV.

52 is too high for Solinco anything. Try 45 for some semblance of power and feel, otherwise it's a board.

Just got done with hitting these 2 poly's. Found the Tourna string to be better for my game. Better feel and more connectedness to the ball. Nice comfort and good pop. Found adequate amount of control. The Sonic Pro Edge was stiffer, noticeably less comfortable and didn't give me that ball pocketing I put a premium on. Not a forgiving string IMO. If I timed the ball right and got a clean strike at the ball, I probably got a bit more bite and pop out of the SPE, but I was more consistent and felt more confident with the Tourna string.

My review above was based on groundstrokes only.

Will have 3 Volkl poly's and the Dunlop Black Widow tomorrow. Unfortunately, won't be getting the MSV and Y-Tex test runs until later this month, possibly not until December.

If you have any questions or want to give me any input on what to expect on the 4 setups tomororow, please let me know!

Edit: Can anyone explain why the Dunlop 16 has a softer rating than the 17 on the TW database? I thought thinner gauge meant more soft, powerful feel. Also, can someone comment on the stiffness of the MSV Focus Hex string? The database has the 1.18 gauge as a 224, which is incredibly stiff considering I thought the SPE was not forgiving enough. I'm assuming if I went to the 1.23 gauge it would be even stiffer? Anyone play the 1.23? Cyclone also has a similar stiffness rating as the SPE. Can anyone do a comparison between those 2 in terms of softness/forgiveness? One last question I have is what is BHB7's tension maintenance in comparison to Black Widow or Cyclone Tour?

Also, question regarding gauge on the BHB7... what are your preferences? I didn't know what gauge I was hitting tonight, but it turned out to be the 1.30. I'm thinking about trying the 1.23, but not sure if that might be too powerful and soft.

Looking at Weiss Cannon Scorpion and Signum Firestorm. Any opinions?

New list of strings that are in contention still. I've compiled the stiffness ratings for each.

1. BHB7 (the only one I've hit thus far) - 175
2. Cyclone - 191
3. Cyclone Tour - 171
4. V-Star - unsure about the 17g, 16g is 173, so I'm assuming it's going to be soft
5. Focus Hex - again unsure about the 1.23, 1.18 is 224, so I'm assuming it's going to be stiff
6. Black Widow - 217, so confused how 17g can be stiffer than 16g
7. Scorpion - 193
8. Firestorm - 198
9. Quadro Twist - 178

SPE is at 195 so I'm a little hesitant about Cyclone, Black Widow (apparently), Focus Hex, Scorpion, and Firestorm maybe being similar in terms of overall feel. We'll see in due time.

Getting the 3 Volkl's and Dunlop strung tonight. Hopefully can get an idea of what they are like tomorrow.

You may want to try a full bed of Solinco Tour Bite SOFT 17 around 51 lbs. I previously only played with multis to keep my arm pain-free, but needed more control. My first hit with TBS was incredible and I never looked back. I have the same, if not even more power, but noticeably more control. It is definitely a unique string in that it gives a good dose of both power and control. On top of that, it is about as comfortable as a full multi setup. And the tension maintenance and playability is great for a poly, as I get 8 good hours of play out of it before I start to feel a decrease in performance. It's worth a try!

I'll put in another vote for Tour Bite Soft. I'm using 17 in my Speed Pro and found the same characteristics as KenC. Very comfortable for a poly with enough power, crispness and decent control.

It doesn't quite have as much power and comfort as the Sonic Pro 17 I was using but it definitely has more control, spin potential and doesn't lose tension as fast.

The 17 is 1.20mm and the 16 is 1.25mm so at the thinner end for each gauge. Well worth a try.

NO poly wil give you feel or "liveliness"

Try Tour Bite again and drop the tension around 5lbs or more. I have had it down to 35 and still there are stupid amounts of control.

I actually beg to differ. Some poly's are livelier and give you more feel. Tour Bite and Luxilon are going to give you less liveliness and feel than some other co-poly's that I've recently tried. I think there is feel and liveliness when you compare poly to poly.

I have now given up on Tour Bite Soft 17.

This is the third time I have tried it. It never shines on the first day (I think it takes a little time to "break in"). It plays very well the second day. Then it is done the third day.

A poly dying on the third day is quite common, but the break-in period, which only leaves 1 day of good playability for this particular string, is a deal-breaker for me.

V-Star and BW are out.

I expected that to be honest.... Black Widow is a overly soft and mushy feeling string and V-Star is designed to be a very soft poly. Have you ever tried Topspin Cyber Flash at lower tensions? Crisp feel, decent performance and a good price.

I am not a guru or anything remotely close.

But I have the same racket and I am trying to find a soft poly string which has decent power and good life.

After some research, I found a few which are available at my place -
Topspin Cyber blue
Signum Pro Hyperion

Did anyone here had a chance to test these?
In fact, I have already ordered these and will try it next but it won't be before next week.

I am currently using Prince Synthetic gut original and it's awful. Before that I had the Pro Hurricane which was much better in performance and easier on the arm as well.

No I haven't. If I tried that string I would definitely need to string it really low... the power level on the string seems to be similar to a Lux and Solinco. I think I'm looking at polys that have more inherent power. Not too much like a Black Widow and V-Star, but more like a BHB7.

I think Cyclone Tour is going to come off the list next but I might hit with it just for a little more to get a final judgment. I think its a little more powerful than BHB7 and is similar to the Black Widow.

Very interested in the Y-Tex string. Ambivalent as of now re: MSV, WeissCannon, and Signum

This should be YOUR cross. I have used it and it is better than most other poly strings as a cross (only).

Won't be looking to use gut for the foreseeable future. Going to keep testing full poly setups.

Going to be playing Quadro Twist to compare it to BHB7. Also will continue to hit Cyclone to see if the 2 pound drop in tension makes the string bed any softer.

Cyclone Tour is still in the picture, but I might not hit it much longer because it feels softer than BHB7 and I find BHB7 to have that perfect firm feel... anything softer might get too mushy too quickly IMO.

Focus Hex is sliding down my list even though I haven't played it yet, mostly because the string is supposedly stiff and the power isn't really there. Firestorm and Scorpion are wild cards... I may or may not even string them.

Asking the question again -
Does the Topspin cyber blue and the Signum Pro hyperion fit the bill here?

Any experiences with either of these strings plz do share.

I hit Cyber Blue long time ago. It was a powerful, soft string, but it felt "plasticky" to me and it lacked control. Hard to describe, it wasn't overly powerful, but I didn't feel connected to the ball. I also think that because it is a circular poly and not shaped, I wasn't able to get the spin to bring the ball down into the court given the extra pop with the string. Compared to a string like BHB7, it doesn't have the same spin potential, so the power sometimes was harder to rein in. I think the plasticky feel came from the power combined with the fact that it wasn't great in the spin department.

Looking for direct comparisons between BHB7 and Quadro Twist right now.

They play very similar honestly. IMO:
Quadro twist feels slightly softer.
BHB7 is better in the spin department
BHB7 is a livelier string
Quadro twist probably has better tension maintenance and better playability
They are about equal in power which is above average for a poly.

I answered in another thread where you had asked the question but saw you had asked it in this one too. Overall I prefer BHB7, just like the spin better and that it plays soft but has a lively feel.

Yeah I saw that. Thanks for the reply there, I was actually hoping that someone could answer if I posted in both threads.
I really like BHB7 too, but am a little worried that I'm only 5 hours in and the playability seems to have dropped. I played on clay for a few hours and definitely feel there is a difference from how it played when I first hit with it. This is with the thicker 16 gauge as well.
Would you say that Quadro Twist still has a lively feel? And with regards to the softness, is it going to be softer than strings like Black Widow, Cyclone Tour, and V-Star? All 3 of those seem to be slightly softer than the BHB7 and a little less crisp.

My final list is really down to these 4 strings:
Cyclone
Cyclone Tour
Quadro Twist
BHB7

Cyclone seems to be the one that really doesn't fit into the group based on its stiffer feel and lower power, but I'm giving it a shot at a lower tension, -2 lbs. Interested in seeing how it feels.

I have ordered Cyber blue and will check it out next week.
Do you think it will be more powerful and difficult to control than a typical synthetic gut?

Any opinions of the Hyperion or other strings from Signum pro?
They seem to have a very positive feedback in various forums plus they seem to retain their playability for long.

Cyclone and BHB7 are very similar also Cyclone Tour and Quadro Twist are very similar

Personally I like BHB7 over Cyclone because of the better ball pocketing, better spin, better touch/feel, better power

Also prefer Cyclone Tour over quadro twist. But IMO these are sooooo similar… Same level of spin, Cyclone tour has more power and feels softer to me and a little"deader" than Quadro Twist.

Thanks. A little confused by your last statement. You say that CT is more powerful and softer, but also deader than QT. I usually relate dead to stiffer. Can you elaborate?

Well keep in mind that with these two strings I'm basically splitting hairs because the differences are so small. So when I say it plays deader it really might not even be noticeable to some and some may feel the other way... Like I said, at that point you're pretty much splitting hairs.

I know it doesn't really "answer" your question but it was mainly just a feeling thing.

I initially wasn't going to hit the Cyclone Tour for much longer because I thought it was a little softer than BHB7 and maybe had a tiny less control.

If you say that the CT is almost identical to the QT I might have to throw it back into the mix.

What are your thoughts on regular Cyclone? Obviously a much stiffer string, I'm stringing it a little lower to see if I can get some livelier power from it.

I don't like regular cyclone honestly.. I played with it a while back in my Ai 98 at 50lbs. it still felt stiff and kind of like hitting with a board. It does offer some good control I will give it that but I just prefer the other 3 strings you previously mentioned. Cyclone gives good spin, not noticeably better than you average shaped poly. It has pretty good "lifespan" to where depending on your hitting style you can push it a week or so long than your average poly. Doesn't offer that same pop as the other 3 strings. I feel it does everything pretty well I just don't care for the feel.

If you find gut/poly lively and want a more muted feel. Try the poly of your choice in the mains between 48-52 lbs with a slick syn gut in the cross - volkl syn gut is slick or bab nvy or many others. I personally like these polys: TF RuffCode, TF Razor Code, SigPro Hyperion, SigPro Tornado, or even some of the older less expensive polys like TF RedCode, WC SilverString, SigPro Poly Plasma. SigPro Hyperion is a really good smooth poly, and SigPro Tornado or TF RuffCode are really good textured polys. I would use 17G poly with 17G syn gut.

I think the key point is to get the gut out of the mains. I have found that poly mains will tone done the springiness of a racket if it plays too lively with gut, syn gut or multi mains. The particular poly is personal preference. Take 3 or 4 suggestions and demo them. Some recommend volkl cyclone highly but I personally thought it below average so which poly is going to vary a great deal player to player.

Great feedback, I'll keep your opinion in mind. Both QT and CT will be softer than BHB7 correct? QT will be a little less powerful, CT will be a little more powerful? I don't think you did a comparison b/w CT and BHB7... could you do that?

Yes they will be softer than BHB7
Yes CT is more powerful than QT

and you've kind of hinted on the difference between CT and BHB7. CT will feel softer and be more powerful. Biggest difference is SPIN. BHB7 gives some awesome spin while CT is just average... nothing special. because you get such good spin with BHB7, you don't loss much control which can potentially be a problem with CT depending on tension.

Oops, I meant to say that CT would be more powerful than BHB7 and QT lower powered than BHB7... still valid statement?

Ah, yes. Spin potential is big when you have a softer poly that's lively. I'm starting to think that's why I enjoyed BHB7 from the first hit.

Umm yeah CT is more powerful. but honestly i didn't find a significant power difference between BHB7 and QT. If you pressed for an answer then i would agree BHB7 is slightly more powerful..

I know i keep going back to spin... but, the reason I tried QT was because it was suppose to offer exceptional spin but BHB7 had noticeably better spin IMO.

BHB7 is defiantly on of my top SHAPED polys that I use. Just staring to venture into the world of smooth ones.

Got it. Thanks... will keep your experiences in mind when I get to hit these side by side. Would it be fair to say this is the order of your preference? BHB7 > QT > CT > Cyclone
I'm more interested in the shaped poly's because of the spin potential they have. I used to use a gut/poly hybrid and I want to get a similar level of spin. Smooth ones won't give me that same ball pocketing and spin IMO. I can't stand Luxilon in a full bed.

I play for a top 16 team in D3. The school is in the NESCAC

Just switch QT and CT and thats my preference. But good luck and hope you do well! keep me posted on your thoughts once you give them a go.

Tourna BHB7 is a great string! I have used over 20 different poly strings. As long as you cut out the strings after 7-10 hours of play, you will have as good a string as you can possibly have that strikes a compromise between control, power and comfort.

Scrap Iron,

Can you make a comparison of BHB7 to Cyclone and Quadro Twist?
I am close to eliminating Cyclone Tour because of it might be too soft for what I'm looking for and maybe a tad too powerful/launchy.

Fascinated by Tourna Black Zone right now. Can anyone give me their take on it?

1. Cyclone
2. BHB7
3. Quadro Twist
4. Tourna Black Zone?

I don't think you will like Black Zone in the Ai98. Black Zone is much more muted and plush than it is crisp, so it will make the racquet feel too muted for you I believe (you had that concern in the beginning when asking for string choices I believe).
