Can a flying clamp act as a starting clamp?

Yes/no and why or why not? Doesn't it do the exact same thing? hold tension? or is the fact that a starting clamp is smaller and easier to use thats the issue?

In short, yes. It may not be as reliable (if you have the bulky flying clamps that came with the Gamma X-2, they might slip...), but if you're desperate, nothing wrong with this option.

i am not exactly desperate.. its more of are they worth it because i heard the alpha revo comes with 2 flying clamps.. so technically cant they be two starting clamps?

Yeah, they could. I don't have any experience with flying clamps other than the Gamma X-2 clamps (if you are going to use another stringing machine, and you have the X-2, you better go with one that has fixed clamps, lol...), so I can't give a definitive answer, but I can say they should be. ;-)

so flying clamps can act as a starting clamp.. lol so i gues i won't really have to get one.. because the Revo that i am ordering soon comes with 2 flying clamps along with 2 fixed clamps lol.. so is there even a point of buying a starting clamp?

Out of curiosity, did you bother reading my post? If I recall, the Revo comes with Badminton flying clamps not actual flying clamps. Starting clamps are always going to be superior to flying clamps and they should only be used as a last resort, not as a permanent solution.

Starting clamps are not a necessity, but they come in handy. You can also use them when you are short on the last pull by "piggy backing" it.

Flying clamps dont quite grip the same way a starting clamp does. It's kind of hard to explain. Yes, you can use a flying clamp as a starting clamp, but it won't be quite as easy.

I apoligize Zhou I didnt realize you were talking to me about the badminton flying clamps lol, i didn't know what you were talking about haha, now that you reiterated i understand :). And oh i see, then thats even better because i play badminton too for my school :) so i may buy 2 strings or so for badminton for every once in a while since i only play it once a year for around 3 months. But yeah ill probably purchase one starting clamp then. Is there a point to having two?

Whats piggy backing :S? How would you tension your string if ur short and it doesn't reach the tensioner system? (DW, crank etc.)

Look at the last pictures of the link I posted.

A lot of people here blast Eagnas, but I must say, it probably has the best website for stringing machines. It answers everyone's basic questions about types and features of machines.

If you're getting the spring loaded badminton clamps, they won't work very well as a starting clamp. They don't clamp hard enough. Considering that badminton stringers rarely go over 40# and most tennis stringers start at 50#.

Just get a starting clamp.

a starting clamp is one of those tools you wish you had when you need it. your spending a lot of money on a machine. for an extra few $ get yourself a good starting clamp.

A flying clamp can be used as a starting clamp, but keep in mind that they are adjusted for the thickness of two strings to be clamped. So if you're using it as a starting clamp, run the string back into the second clamping channel, so you're using it like you would normally (two strings being clamped) or really adjust it tighter.

I use the Alpha String Pal, which did come with both badminton and tennis flying clamps. DO NOT try to use the badminton flying clamps as starting clamps- they WILL slip. I've used the regular clamps on the crosses as a starting clamp (for when the string's too short to reach the tensioner), and it's worked with mixed results. It's a massive pain trying to get the clamp to actually hold, and more often than not, the second piece of string will slip. Does it work? Yes. But it's a massive pain. If you've got the money, spend a little bit extra for the starting clamp. If you don't, then be a little more liberal when measuring string.

Meowmix is right about not using the Alpha badminton clamps as a starting clamp. I have a Revo 4000 and those badminton clamps. They aren't intended to hold under typical tensions for a tennis racquet.

When I ordered my Revo over the phone, and order a startinig clamp at the same time, the sales guy gave my $5 off the price since it was all being shipped on the same box. Just something that may save you a few dollars.

yeah i am getting the Revo, and hmm that sounds itneresting. Ya i thought they were tennis flying clamps. I'd never use badminton flying clamps as a starting clamp. Yeah ill probably just get a starting clamp to go along with it.

What about a calibrator? where should i get mine? straight from alpha think theyll give me another discount lol? or from tenniswarehouse?

Again... Contact Mark. I like my Alpha starting clamp and it would be easiest to have it all in the same package instead of several. If you don't want an Alpha starting clamp, others highly recommend the GSS starting clamp. Again Mark for the calibrator.

If you wish to order from TW, go ahead both TW and Mark offer the same price and are a pleasure to work with.

I got a calibrator from Alpha at the same time I ordered the Revo. I don't remember if it was the regular price or a couple dollars less. As Zhou said, it was just easier for me to get it all in the same package and there wasn't a shipping charge. So I saved at least on shipping costs. I do think you need some type to check your machine. So I recommend one regardless of where you get it.
