downs_chris - Can you confirm if there are 8 mains in the throat area for the Clash 98? Also, any feedback from hitting with this racquet?

The leaked pics shown 8 mains in the throat.

That might have been bc it was a pro stock version. The Wilson Dealer workbook image still has the same 6 mains in throat. Either they didn't think it mattered and just used a stock image or the previously leaked pics are a pro specific variant that won't be at retail.

Mine was a pro stock, cant confirm about the mains in the throat for the retailversion..

The 98 sounds like it will be a better fit for my game than the 100, but it would have to be an order of magnitude better for me to consider it.
I’ve given the Clash 100 2 months now and it is easily the worst racket for my game that I have used in the past 5 years, with the exception of outstanding comfort.

That’s said, it may be the perfect fit for someone else. It's comfortable with a full bed of poly and you get easy depth and some free power for slow-medium swing speeds.
What is your playing style and what did you hate about it? I have a sensitive arm and to date only Pro Kennex rackets around 315 unstrung have been pain free, Textreme Tour 100p hurt my wrist.

looking forward to this 98 surprised we haven't heard anything on actual day of release or had much of an official word from Wilson!

Thoughts?
Seems like a good frame, still flexy and comfy. Much better control then the 100s and better playability overall. No issues with generating spin and there is enough power. It was strung with 4g which is a poly i don’t like so no comment on feel or connection. It has 8 mains in the throat so not as ridiculously open as the 100s.

I'd be interested if it was sub 60 RA? Probably not if even the control oriented Ultra Tour (so-called pro stock) is 63RA.

For one 310g and 12 HL is extremely head light for that weight. And if true and Wilson stock spec is 310/12HL then their QC is beyond terrible as their balance is way off when measured

I was also surprised with the super HL balance for this racquet. As for Wilson QC being terrible, it wouldn't be the first time.

I would agree that the tie position looks funny. I am no expert on the matter though. That is one thing I like about my current head prestige. It has a little note on the frames around the grommet for the main and cross tie off holes. I am sure Wilson will release the official string tie off pdf sheet once the racquet is released.

Are the foam pads around the grommets in the throat stock, or did someone add them?

I've stepped away from the 98s I've been playing the last few years like the Pure Strike and Beast to use the Phantom Pro 100 18x20 for the last couple of months, but I think I will give the Clash 98 a try.

@time_fly These are leather pads commonly known as power pads and some stringers like to use. Federer for instance still likes them on his frames. My stringer also adds them so it’s a bit of a habit with him. Its from the old days of gut strings and protecting them from rubbing against the grommet holes. They don’t effect playability in any meaningful way but I think some people just became a habit

got a chance to hit with this stick yesterday
I like it a lot on the 1hbh,
I didn't know too much about the specs going in, but next day, no arm issues
I was surprised to read it had such a high HL balance, but it worked out for me!, since I like to be in the 10-12pts HL balance on my sticks
volleys where easy and effortless; slices where great, comfort was there; big sweet spot..
thumbs up from me on this racquet
if youve tried the clash.100/tour, this 98 version is a much easier version to swing
wanna-be-players (at the club level), like me!!, will luv this frame..

How is the control is it still erratic or better than the 100s. What about the stability and plow trough?

@Wilsonbro the 98 is better than the 100,, as you would expect,, in plow and control going from a 100 to a 98!!
i liked it more,, but then again I tried them weeks apart
the 100 was my favorite over the 100.tour; but now the 98 is my new favorite over the 100..

my local shop (not sure of the release dates),, @pennc94 any local shop that has received the clash 100 will be and/or should have received the 98s and 108s racquets/info by now
received earlier this year: 100clash, 100.tour.clash
received earlier last month: 98clash, and 108.clash (I think its 108, I could be wrong, but it is a oversize one, saw it briefly, did not pay attention to it); again I don't know the release dates on these last 2 models..

I am kind of surprised Wilson has not made an official announcement on the release date yet. Maybe the clash hype is gone a little since the 100 ones have been out a few months. Hoping that it is around June 15th.

Its 8 mains in the throat bust still wide open string pattern. Interesting
The photo makes it look like a hybrid string job with only two tie offs. o_O But assuming the light is playing tricks that looks like a one piece string string pattern with the mains finishing at the top; sixth or maybe seventh main would be a more common tie off point.

Interesting - the 98 and 108 don’t have that notch I the throat area just above the top of the handle.

Anybody have a demo in Maryland?
