Can I use non tennis shoes?

Hi! I'm a former badminton player, then I stopped for a couple of months now to concentrate on school. I want to switch to tennis. Is it okay to use my indoor non-marking Adidas shoes for tennis? Or should I get a tennis specific shoe?

Any shoes are good for tennis, as long as you can move in them and you get the ankle support you need and its comfortable.. my friend plays in skate shoes.

Well the only shoes that I have found outside of Tennis shoes that are ok for tennis are Basketball shoes. I still would by tennis shoes because they have extra support for toe dragging and seem to have better cushioning.

Cross trainers, running shoes, walking shoes I would definitely not use. Don't know about skate shoes.

At my club with indoor courts they FLIP OUT if you have anything other than non makring soles. Basketball shoes will ruin the courts so whoever said that must be a little tipsy or something. But as long as your shoes are non-marking you should be fine. Don't use running shoes, you'll roll your ankles.

ian it depends on what surface you are playing on. if you are playing on a hardcourt, i think you will go through those badminton shoes really really fast..the shoes are designed for a wooden non abrasive surface and just wont hold up on a hardcourt.

No indoor courts around here, don't need them. It was 75 degrees and sunny today :p

BTW there are lots of nonmarking basketball shoes.

If you didn't play before with good tennis shoes, it wouldn't be a problem.
But when you played with tennis shoes before, it's almost imposible to play with running shoes, your ankles will tell you later.
I never had ankle problems, till one day I had the stupid idea to play with running shoes :(

Thanks for the replies guys! I'll probably use my badminton shoes till it wears out then buy myself some tennis shoes. :)

Ha well sry to break it to you, but some of us live in New York and got 16 inches of snow yesterday. I've NEVER seen bball shoes with soles suitable for hardcourt - and I played bball for the better part of 4 years back in the day before I started breaking bones and ruining my tennis game.

And yeah running shoes are a huge NO - I was in physical therapy for awhile because of numerous ankle rolls from those things.
