can my wife change her self rating from 3.5 to 3.0?

My wife just started playing her first usta league this season with me, on a mixed league team. Because this was was a 8.0 team, we decided that if she self-rated as a 3.5, she can play with 4.5 players (you must be within 1 rating point of your partner).

However, she now may have the opportunity to play on a women's 3.0 league. Can she change her rating, lower it to a 3.0? Can she play on a 3.0 team with a 3.5 rating? She has won one match in our mixed league, and lost one match. Thanks in advance!

It's been done before. (a guy on my team did it once)

You have to file a rating appeal with your league coordinator. (you cant do it automatically on the computer)

Search the usta.com sites for the rating appeal form, or contact your league coordinator.

If you are successful she will be unable to continue to play on your Mixed 8.0 with a 4.5 player. Though as crazy as it sounds she could play with a 4.0.

On a side note, if she is holding her own in your 8.0 Mixed league she is most likely closer to a 3.5 then a 3.0. If you took an average 3.0 woman and put her on a court with two average 4.0 players, she would be blown away by the level of play.

This leads me to think your wife is stronger then 3.0.

One thing to note though is that in a lot of leagues, you cant play mixed with more than 2 levels of difference. So if she wins her self rating appeal, she might no longer be able to play with a 4.5 in the 8.0 league.

You definately cant play 3.0 with a 3.5 rating, youd need an appeal to do that.

Im also not sure what happens if you've already played a couple matches, but that is a good question for your league coordinator.

Thus fitting right in with many typical 3.0 leagues. :)

This is where I dont like how the system works, in some areas coordinators are falling over backwards to appeal players in this situation, and in others they probally are a bit more wary of it (I know in some you have to pay a fee).

If it was my section, this would get appealed like nobody's business. (not that I know this person or know that two matches really mean a whole lot)

There was once an entire mixed doubles team comprised of high school coaches, college coachs, and people who will admit were former 4.5 players. The coordinators (who also ran a team at 7.0 mixed) suggested that they play 6.0 mixed.

I agree that your wife might be too strong for 3.0. Heck, I'm finding it tough sledding in 7.0 mixed, and I'm a 3.5.

She might well get DQ'd. Equally importantly, she'd likely be bored to tears at 3.0.

Bored, smored... Who cares about boredom when you have the possibility of a free tshirt you will never wear, or a fantastic pen! :)

Plus you get to see your name in the left hand column under "Winning Player" versus the right hand column under "Opponent". You cant beat that!

There was a record high in DQ's last year though I think in 3.0. If you are in reality anywhere near the top of the next level (close to 4.0), you probally are in some danger of easily getting DQ'ed as a self rated player.

If she plays a couple of ntrp tournaments at 3.5 and tanks (lose 0 & 0) then she can have the computer move her down - and appeal if necessary...

I think it's called "sandbagging" if I'm correct.

That only works if your section counts tourament matches for the particular tournament you are playing in.

(mine doesnt, only select tournaments go towards your rating)

Besides, it would take you until November for your rating to get moved down. (not to mention you are throwing away a lot of money and time by being in those tournaments, you could buy several cases of pens for that money)

Once you have a self-rating and play a match, it is my understanding that you can not appeal the rating. You can only appeal a self-rating only if you have not played a match. I found the info below in the USTA league FAQ's on my Section's web site. I believe this holds true for all sections, but I'm not positive. Ask your local coordinator and they will be able to find out.

20. Can I declare a different self-rating for different League Divisions (e.g., 3.5 for Adult and 4.0 for Senior)?

No. Once you declare an initial self-rating, you are bound by it for one year or
until you generate a computer rating. So if you plan to play 4.0 Senior but also
want to play 3.5 Adult later in the year – be certain that you select 3.5 if an
option.

No, because the way that rule is read, it sounds like your section just deny's any self rating appeal. (it doesnt actually say anything anywhere in that rule about whether you have played a match or not, it just says that you cant change your self rating)

I know in my section we can appeal our self rating. We can also appeal our minimum self rating. If someone wants to sign up for a 3.0 team, the computer says that they can only rate themselves 3.5 and they go ahead and do it, but then appeal, they have to then change their self rating....

That is soooooo tempting!

Seriously, in this area they cleared out the 3.0 leagues and made sure it was a beginner league. If 50 is the new 40 then 3.5 is the new 3.0 as the players just moved in mass. If its anything like that she will be bored and DQ
