Can playing mixed cause a strike for a self-rate?

Perhaps you guys can help with this?

A friend of mine self-rated at 3.5 after being out of the game for 20 some years. He has played 7.0 mixed without dropping a match and is now considering playing 8.0 as well. However some have cautioned him against this because he is self-rated and if he continues to do well, may get strikes and possibly a DQ.

I was under the assumption that this couldn't happen or wasn't a possibility until he played men's league in the spring.

Anyone know...can mixed results incur strikes for self-rated players (who haven't yet played regular adult league)?

Thanks!

Don't know much, but I don't think so.

Yes, I believe mixed results can result in a DQ. But if he plays enough adult matches to get a rating, then he would be safe.

I believe your correct and if I'm not mistaken the mixed bump only occurs at the end of the year. Being 3 years removed from my captain duties I'm becoming rusty with the rules and regs of USTA Team Tennis.

There are no strikes in mixed. You can file a self-rate grievance, but players can't get DQ'd to the next level mid-season.

This gets into a gray area that different sections have differing rules.

Last year in my league, a team was pretty systematic with the computer-rated 4.0 with self-rated 3.0 trick for 7.0 mixed. Others complained and a lot of the self-rateds (some 3.0, some 3.5, half or more of them) were sent up a level for the playoffs. They did not lose the matches already played, but essentially had half their team unavailable for the playoffs.

They won away but were hobbled for Sectionals.

This is a self-rating grievance, which is a situation that requires human intervention, as opposed to a dynamic DQ, which is a computer-based action.

Unless something has changed for this year, I don't think there are dynamic DQs in mixed.

Kyle, why do you say that?

I've seen players get DQ'd by only playing mixed. I think I have, anyway.

"Scores for all Adult and Senior matches are calculated in the dynamic NTRP computer program. NorCal will inform players when they reach the disqualification level three times based on all adult and senior matches appearing in the system. Results from Mixed Doubles, Combo, FiftyMixed, and both Super Senior leagues do not generate dynamics and do not produce strikes."

This is Norcal specific, but I believe that dynamic DQ is administered by the national USTA, so this should be the same everywhere.

You can get bumped up as a result of playing Mixed, but it happens at the end of the year.

You wont get DQd playing Mixed or Combo unless someone files a grievance.

I don't believe you can file a grievence in Mixed or Combo. You can try but they are not accepted. Correct? Can anyone sight the rule or is it section based?

13. Can I use my mixed exclusive rating to play in other divisions?
Yes. Mixed exclusive is a minimum NTRP start level only. A mixed exclusive
rating is not supported by any NTRP calculation data and is subject to self-rate grievance.

Looks like I was wrong about DQs for mixed. That makes a lot of sense. One of the 8.0 mixed captains likes to recruit teaching pros for her team. I always figured they would get DQ'd, but apparently not.

I believe that one is somewhat section based. Since there are no dq in mixed and combo, the only recourse when someone self rates at an obviously incorrect level is a self rate grievance. This is the case where the usta can't just say "we'll let the computer sort it out." The usual caveats still apply: base the grievance on verifiable facts (like they played D1 tennis) instead of subjective statements (they are you good to be a 3.5).

Interesting you mention that...because that is the captain asking this player to join her 8.0 team!!!

However here we have had a self rated mixed player get DQ'd early in the adult season, as a result of adult matches, and become disqualified for mixed sectionals as a result of the DQ during the adult season.

Yes, if you get DQ'd for adult/senior matches during a mixed season, you have to finish the mixed season with the higher rating. Although, you are not really "DQ'd" from mixed, you just have to play with a lower rated partner.

Except in this case it was a guy playing 7.0 who was DQ'd to 4.5 during the adult season and therefore could not play with a 2.5 partner.
