Can prestretching syn gut make it play dead ?

I have a roll of LaserFibre Classic Syn Gut that I'm using to experiment with different tensions. For the heck of it, I tried prestretching one string job prior to stringing. I then strung the prestretched string at a tension that should have yielded a lively ball response. Instead of a lively string bed, the strings played absolutely dead with no power at all. The only thing I can think of that caused this was the prestretching of the strings. Is that the likely cause? What else can cause a string job to play dead with no power ?

after you use stirngs for a while, they stretch out, lose tension, and play dead. they also lose power and control. Seems like the prestreching did indeed kill those strings.

Yes, prestretching can set the string and take the liveliness out of it. Some people like this because the tension stays the same longer(the initial tension loss is lowered by the prestretching), but it does change the way the string feels. The effect seems to be more pronounced on some strings than on others. Obviously, the effect on this string was not what you were looking for.

I agree with Gaines, Also, I just strung up a new string at my normal tension of 72lbs and I think it went dead. Do you think some strings hold up to higher tensions better than others? I have no scientific data, but from my findings of trying different strings, it sure seems that way. The ball plays okay, just no feel.
