Can Rafa Nadal go past Roger Federer’s majors record in 2020 ?

Unless Federer completes 2020 gold slam by clinching Tokyo, there is no shadow of a contest to talk about anymore at this point for anyone who remotely resembles anything akin to a somewhat serious tennis analyst.

Nadal is a racing certainty to go past Federer in next two years..whether by end of 2020 depends on fitness. Hard to see past Nadal for French and Us Open.

To be honest unless the next gen step up, and i have doubts over all of them including Medvedev, it seems certain Nadal and Djokovic get past Federer in next 3 years as the gulf between nadal and djokovic and the rest is massive. Its a bit of a shame this year Nadal v Djokovic h2h is 1-1. Would have been nice for them to have played W final.

Its going to be hard for Djokovic to get past Nadal. 3 slam difference in the form they are in is too much to bridge unless rafa ends his career earlier.

But it actually looks like Djokovic has the bigger health issue.

We could easily see a year where Djokovis wins all 4, and then it gets crazy.
Remember he was supposed to win RG this year in the eyes of many, but failed at the SF stage.

We could also see Nadal and Djokovic split slams again, we could see Fed win Wimbledon, Nadal win RG, Djokovic the other 2 etc etc

But to answer the question, yes Rafa can make 21 in 2020, but it will be very difficult for him, even defending RG again.
These guys lose a little every year IMO, and it wont be long till theyre beaten by the young guns.

Djokovic can win at any of the slams whereas I feel Nadal has his best shot at 2 slams at most (he won’t defend USO imo). So I think by next year it’s Djokovic 18, Rafa 20-21, and it will be close by the end of their careers (I see 25-23 for Nadal).

I think Djokovic will be after that record also !!!

If/ when Rafa passes 20, Djokovic will be after Nadal's record, not Federer's.

I think Rafa ends up at 22, 2 RG + 1. I doubt Djokovic can win 7 more.

Slam race is in many ways Rafa's to lose now. Freddy's balls shrunk at 40-15, while Bull is strutting.

Agreed although Djokovic at FO im not sure as Thiem also seems to have his number there.

Rafas strut at Laver Cup is at its most epic...im worried he will pull a muscle he is swaggering so much. Roger at it as well.

I am a nadal fan but i could potentially see djoker playing into his 30's similar to fed but not at old, but say 35-36 so he could end up with 20-22 but then again could only end up with18/19 so Nadal really needs to get to 22/23 really to be safe imo, but i think he'll end on 21/22 maybe....fed maybe has 1 more left maybe with a good draw.

Rafa reached the AO'19 final easily right after his return from a four month injury break. So, he knows how to play well at the Australian Open. He can very well win another AO title. :)

Djokovic is Done on clay!
And in the US Open he is beatable.
So, anyone who thinks he is the favorite to win the 4 Majors doesn't know much about tennis.
THIEM kills Djokovic on clay at USO he’s vulnerable Wimbledon he was very lucky only at the AO he is favorite

Disagree about crushed.
I think it would've been a tougher final than Thiem for Nadal.
Djokovic historically raises his game versus Fedal also. And plenty on here had Djokovic as favourite going into RG, based on winning the previous 3 slams.
Its easy to say now, that Nadal would've won easily, but before the tournament, no one said this.

I picked Ned to easily win RG even during his clay ‘struggles’. Receipts are somewhere I was willing to bet a few users who were all in on Djokovic to win it. So no, not no one. Plenty still believed in Ralph

More like 21-19.

Novak winning 7 more aged 32 onwards, not likely. Rafa winning 6 more equally absurd.

Everything they've accomplished lately is absurd.
Every absurdity has an end. Or would you suggest they will continue winning slams for the next 15 years?

If they had no injuries, sure, why not, but both are physically struggling, so 6-7 more slams each, nah.

Medvedev and RF might win a few, and who knows how some other NextGenners aside from Bearerer might develop in the following 2-3 years.

NextGenners winning slams? Now that sounds absurd, but soon we shall get used to it.

It will end. The real question being : when this will end ? And nobody has any idea.

Nadal's been physically struggling during his entire career so that's not saying much. Federer physically struggled in 2013 and he was already 32 but he came back from it and won 3 more slams. Granted that winning 3 slams is not like winning 6 or 7 slams but he could have done it if two ATGs weren't in his way. Maybe Nadal and Djokovic will be luckier, no one really knows.

Well, sure, if you choose to misread my posts you could also conclude that I am arguing that RF´s twins will win 100 slams soon.

I didn´t say Novak and Rafa won´t win any more, I simply said they won´t win 6-7 more EACH.

Comprende?

Hahahaha, no need to be sensitive Madame. Merely clarifying. Hence, the question mark

Nadal's slam performances this year were really fantastic.

F at AO
Win at RG
SF at Wim
Win at USO

One of his best years at slams...

the last two years have seen nadal play some of his best stuff at Wim. I don't see why he would decline so terribly next year....

He still looks so strong and has so much vigor in his game...

Fed in contrast has seen his level decline at slam level especially at the usopen. his worst slam (even worse) than RG surprisingly...

Right up there with 2008 and 2010.

Except that his 1-2 H2H vs Novak and RF makes it weaker, somewhat.
