Can Roddick get his mojo back?

So far, Any Roddick has been doing pretty bad compared to last year and his grand slam results. Har Andy permanently lost his mojo or what do you think he needs to improve on?

He's one of the fastest guys on tour, but isn't in position to stike the ball well. I don't neccessarily think this is a result of him standing so far back because Nadal does stand that far back and gets to everything, and I don't think Roddick is any slower than Nadal...call me crazy. Nadal just plays a game that has more margin built into it.

Roddick needs to get to the ball, and if it's a forehand, hit the ball cleaner. He seems to be be spinning the ball more which isn't hurting his opponents.

The BH slice is a good development. But the BH topspin is still a problem. There's a terrific article on John Yandell's website, www.tennisplayer.net, that addresses why.

The serve is still great.

What's huge is that he has lost a lot of confidence and lacks a game plan that he has confidence in. Apparently he's looking at tape. Maybe he can use the footage to fix his flawed topspin BH and to develop a game plan that he can be confident in.

He also approaches off the wrong balls and has shaky technique on the volley to boot. His reactions at the net, and in general, seem slower than those of his rivals.

He has a lot of work to do it seems. But who knows, maybe a return of confidence will be enough to bring him back.

I agree with double. He needs to work on his confidence, Federer had crashed his confidence pretty bad. He should find a coach that is good at teaching the mental game. He seemed a bit shaky sometime, dropping a few games, then came back.

Perhaps he should try learning some other sports, help him to gain some new perspectives. I think Kendo is an awesome sport to learn if you want to improve on tennis. A lot of things overlaps in these two sports: footsteps, mentality, reflex, precision arm swing. But Kendo trains these in a higher and tougher level. I started to learn kendo 2 years ago. It was tough, a lot of students drop out. But I was surprised at how much i've improved in tennis skill and even soccer ball dribbling skill. Before I couldn't really dribble the ball, now, I'm better than most of my friends! It's really an amazing sport! I would recommand everyone here to give kendo a try if you can find a doujo around your area.

Roddick needs to just change his stiff arm backhand so he can explode with his backhand like Safin,Agassi, Nalbandian. It came in the Tennis Magazine when they were comparing Safin's backhand to Connors. Roddick is to Connor's stiff arm. Whoever was teaching Roddick back then was certainly not thinking.

Roddick also needs to improve his serve. You guys are thinking WHAT!!! But he really needs to improve his placement and what he is going to do after the serve.wORK ON PASSING SHOTS. Top Ten Things to improve

1.Being more patient
2.Knowing when to come in.
3.Hold his volley grip a little lose
4.Working on his footwork for perparing on shots.

It's not too late for Andy to make these changes.

He needs to focus on serves forehands and going for broke on returns, and quit trying to "improve" thats what he needs to improve on.

ding ding ding winner!
finally someone who gets it!
Its not about volleying or finessing the ball for roddick-its bang bang bang hitting meat and potatos: big serves, big forehands.
I watched his match vs. El Aynaoui and some clips from his match vs. federer at the MS Canada in 2003 (the only time andy has beaten fed.) In both matches he was hitting big shots all around... thats how he won. Dean Goldfine (whose not a bad coach but wasn't right for roddick) confused him by telling him to do all this other stuff... Now Roddick is just an average pusher with a tremendous serve and a spin forehand... not the same intimidating powerhouse of 2003.. In 2004 he wasn't that bad-he just started to push when returning so when he played good players and couldn't break, hed get broken and end of match...Last year he pushed even more-and on his serve, and got his confidence flattened (he lost to Guilles Muller Geez(no offense to Guilles))...This year he said he was going to be agressive, but got out hit by baghdatis at the AO... Its going to be a long road back, but if Roddick gets some confidence from a few big wins over nadal, agassi, hewitt, safin, baghdatis, nalbandian ect. for i.e. or dare I say it- Federer, gets his forehand and footwork going, and starts to be ultra agressive on the return for once, he'll be one helluva animal on the court!!
Look Out ANYBODY...

The question is whether he'll be able to pull all that off...(It's much easier said than done of course)

Maybe his new buzz cut will spur him to victory....

If he goes for broke on return and stops worrying about the netgame he will be back with the top dogs.

Roddick has a tough first round match verses Acasuso. That guy definitely has game. He took Roddick out at the French. So i feel this could be a tough first round opponent for Roddick. Roddick needs to work on his transition game. If he gets a high percentage of his first serves and hits his forehand well he should do fine.

I'll be very surprised if Roddick makes it out of his quarter of the draw. The only way he could is if he went back to his old technique of going for broke and hitting lines. He tried to copy Federer and started slicing backhands and being a little more patient to conserve energy. That just gave his opponents the opportunity to hit winners. Acasuso can hit winners, so he's going to be tough. Any talented player who can hit winners I usually give a 50/50 shot of beating Roddick.
