Can Roger defend AO ...

Of course he can. Whether he will or not is a very different question.

And the WTF is the most important event after the slams. That's not even a debate. There's the facts, and then there is a small handful of salty VB members and Federer haters.
Everyone rational, Nadal fans included, knows this. You're likely new here - welcome. :) I trust you won't let yourself be steered so easily into delusion.

That’s the big one not WTF which is meaningless !
I wouldn't call WTF nothing.. the undefeated champion can get 1500 atp points and $2.5M so it's obviously between a GS title and a masters title.

that said, assuming roger is healthy I think it could depend on the AO court speed..

Don't expect him to. But the news about Novak and Andy's returns haven't been the most encouraging lately. We've been expecting a wild AO due to the messed up seeding, but those top guys might not be ready to win right away when they come back in January.

Obviously if the competition isn't back to full strength and Fed is healthy, he'll be the overwhelming favorite just like he was for the last two majors.

It will be hard, the draw could be a big factor with Djokovic returning, if he returns in the same fashion Federer and Nadal di last year then I wouldn't want to face him early on

I like the massive response to the not so subtle jab.

On topic: if he is healthy and doesn't have to go through both Djokovic and Nadal he can do it.

In any event it is a big ask.

If they provide the quick surface like earlier this year, then more likely than not.

I like his chances to at least make the finals. Honestly speaking since they are cursed to never meet at uso, this will be the only chance we get another fedal slam final again.

I still find it unbelievable to say but he's probably going to be the favorite to win it, unless Nadal beats him at the wtf.

Djokovic will be hungry
Can Nadal win WTF for once?

(The big one, not RG which is meaningless)
RG is not a priority for Federer

Correct I can’t see Federer beating Rafa Djokovic in AO unless the court is super fast

I just think if Novak comes back hungry and in good form, Federer is going to be runner up again most of the time, just like 2015/16.

Tennis matches used to be on Rogers racquet early in his career. Its the same with Novak now. If he plays close to his top game, Roger has no chance.

Interesting for sure.

Why should it always be a Nadal fan or Federer hater thing?

I’m a Federer fan who maybe missed only a handful matches of him over the past years, but I was never especially excited about the WTF.

For me a good Masters win against the whole field and with decent opponents in the last rounds is bigger than WTF with 7 opponents in total. In the 90s it was even more worthless with many clay specialists in top 8 who were no competition on carpet.

Also I don’t like that you can easily lose a match and still win the tournament. That is not tennis for me and also doesn’t suit the so-called WTF spirit of “beating the best of the best”.

At least Federer won 5 out of his 6 WTF titles undefeated. Sampras on the other hand NEVER accomplished this, so I don’t even know how to count these “titles” in my personal view. As a Sampras fan in my childhood I always was a bit upset back then and asked me: “Is it really a big title when he lost to someone like Moya indoors in Round Robin?”

I like the current venue of the WTF very much and of course I root for Federer as always, but the excitement is not even comparable to the Slams or Olympic Games. Or let me say it otherwise: It is just the normal excitement of watching Roger on the court, but not the excitement of him winning something very big next week.

That feeling will come back at the Australian Open, and I think this is it was the OP wanted to express.

Federer struggles against Djokovic for one reason he can’t get balls past him

Olympics are bigger than WTF. The Pros have said so many times.

Depends on speed of surface and height of bounce. If like this year then yes, but if slower and higher bouncing like it normally is then no, Nadal a shoe in unless Djokovic is fit and firing on all cylinders

Until he shows a drop in form, Roger has to be considered the favorite.

On bovada the current odds for the Australian Open are
Federer +300
Nadal +300
Murray +350
Djokovic +350
Zverev +1000
Wawrinka +1400
Del Potro +2000

Nope. Nobody believes that except VB. Worth zero points and many players don't even bother showing up. National pride is the only motivating factor there.

All all-time greats going back decades, except Nadal, have won the Tour Finals. The only one to have won the Olympic tennis is Nadal. It's nice, but it has no pedigree and now it offers literally zero points it's not far off being an exhibition.

Why do these questions keep getting asked? This is what makes this and other forums so ridiculous. Who will win? When will they win? Why did they win? Yikes!
