Can Roger still do it?

Don't think Roger is winning a hardcourt slam. Its not just about matches with Novak, he can be beaten by many players over there or left bruised like as in AO 20.

Wimbledon is the only logical chance when he can go through his matches quickly because of grass court finesse. Then need that insane luck not to have Novak or even Rafa

No.
Roger is done.

Writing him off in 2016 and in 2020 are very different things.
39 is too old. 36 was still kind of doable and it took Roger's talent to do it. 39? It's a stretch too far.
+1

Roger had his chance and almost pulled it off: Novak was shaky in that 2019 W final, but Roger was even shakier.

He would have killed the GOAT debate versus his 2 nemesis-es.

Past 35, every victory might be the last one of your career, as your body slowly degrades.

Osteo arthritis has ended the career of many past greats (Hewitt, Guga, Lendl, Agassi, Becker, Mecir, Murray...) and Fed just joined the group.

Happy retirement, Roger.

Nadal could obviously win another French or two, but probably nothing else. Djoker could certainly pick up another handful of majors. Can Federer feasibly come back and win one? I still think Novak is the favorite to end up with the most, but I wouldn’t say Nadal is a sure thing to overtake Roger. What is everyone thinking about Federer’s return? Optimistic?
More likely Nadal will surely win 2 more FOs and quite possibl another slam or two elsewhere, he's the firm favourite to end up with the most for me.

As for Fed I'd say no but he's Fed so you can't write him off until he truly hangs his racquet.

Nadal has made the final of 4 of the last 7 hard court slams over the last four years -winning two -and he may well have won this year's US Open, if he had taken part, but he apparently has no chance of winning another HC slam.

Great logic.

He can still do it IMO. But Nadal still gonna overtake him anyway. I can see Roger winning 1 or 2 more but that won't be enough. At least he will 2nd in race by respectable thin margin. If Nadal wins 23-24 and he remains 20 - i don't think he has case to be GOAT in that scenario.

1 or 2 more? I think 1 would be a minor miracle, 2 and you’d have to cancel the sport forever..lol

Let's wait and watch. Things can change very soon in Tennis. He has written some nice stuff for the sake of PR yesterday. But I know the man he hates to be second. There should be a lot of fire in his belly. He is not some chump who would sit in home happily while his rivals are taking on his biggest records. He has got mentality of a champion - it's given he will bounce back
Time may not be his side but vacuum era surely is.

Didn’t say no chance, you emotional wreck. I saw him get pummeled by Djokovic in Australia and squeak by Medvedev. Of course he can win another hard court, but it’ll be tough. I’m not saying it’s impossible. Geez.

It's not getting any easier for him. Anything is possible but at this point there are several players capable of defeating him at slams even if he's healthy, whereas a couple of years ago there were less.

When Fedr is concerned age does not matter anymore. Right? Well, no. When and if he gets back and starts playing we will know if he is going to be competitive or not. Until then is if OFF the court and not in the race to win ANY title.

I wonder if he will go for the titles record even if it's clear he can't win a slam. Maybe he will win 7 more basel's and retire.

I think in Wimbledon he is a favorit against Nadal.

He certainly can. He is still working on new shots during this break time. Disappearing and coming back playing a modified style is his strategy nowadays.

No. He's REALLY fricking old. The male body starts to decline in terms of athletic output in the mid twenties - Federer is way over a decade beyond that point.

The only way the Big Three have managed to 'counteract' that physical decline is by a combination of point-shortening tactics, putting less importance on small tournaments, and feasting on the incompetence of the upcoming generations, but that can only take you so far...

It would be fitting for him to pull a rabbit out of a hat at 40 and end his career with an epic Wimbledon win.

Federer should win the Australian open 2021 and Wimbledon 2021. He always comes back and plays like he did 10 year ago when he takes extended time off
I'd take a special flight to your location in august 2021, and hug you warmly if that comes out to be true and feder wins ao & wim 2021

What makes you think Nadal will not win majors other than French? Especially US open which he won two times in his last three attempts. Or Wimbledon which he reached the semifinals on the last two occasions and came horribly close in one of them. Or Australian open where he reached the finals two times in the last four years and came very close on one of those occasions?
What makes you think Djokovic will win a handful of majors considering the way he struggled in finals of majors in the last few occasions (Wim-19, AO-20, FO-20)?
What makes you think Nadal will win just another French or two considering that he has won that tournament in the most dominating fashion in the past four years losing just 3 sets along the way? Even after a couple of years, whom do you think can stop Nadal at French? Nadal is still going very strong and I frankly do not see him declining any time soon.
Coming to Federer, I think even if he comes back to close to his best level, he will maximum reach quarter final or semi final and lose in tough five sets to some in-form player just as he has been doing the past few years but he will not win any more slam and even if he gets a golden opportunity to win some big title, his fragile mind will not allow him to win just like Wimbledon 2019. He is more likely to choke away any opportunity that may come his way just as he has often done throughout his career.

The 2021 AO is going to be interesting with a healthy Federer. More importantly, he will be fresh mentally. I believe that’s why he won the 2017 AO. His mind was in the right place. It all went downhill when he blew 40-15 against Delpo in the IW final. Fed’s mind hasn’t been the same since. He followed this up by blowing a 2-0 lead to Kandy a few months later.

A healthy Fed with a clear mind could do some damage at the 2021 AO. He still has a chance at the 2021 Wimbledon as well.

As a fan, I will take a large leap of faith and say that Fed has one more miracle in him. I know, it’s crazy and not logical. But hey, that’s what being a fan is all about. You have to have faith in your favorite.

i’d love to see federer show up in 2021straight nuking his forehand and serves. he’s not getting any faster but he could absolutely make a concerted effort (and train for it) to just go gonzalez on any ball he’s in position to hit. might be a fun way to go out on the farewell tour. that, and practice ripping dtl backhands, all the time. the guys got good enough racket skills, who knows, he might get comfy playing like that.

basically become the camila giorgi of the atp for his last go-around.

Not just Wimbledon but he's missed up on a good few USO chances in 2017/2019 due to injuries and I say that as a Nadal fan, would've spanked my boy in 2017 if he was healthy as he had Nadal's number that year and would've won 2019 in a close 4 set battle similar to Wimb 19, Medvedev isn't gonna beat him in a slam F

Needs to take USO seriously not just focus the entire season on Wimbledon
USO takes place late in the year and at his age he can be tired by then, it depends on ho much he plays till that point. On top of that, USO is too slow and bouncy for him game, it's just not a good environment for him.USO will not play again like in the 2000s, but I still expect an one last good run there, somtehing like Connors 1991.

With a favorable draw, he always has a chance for 1 or maybe 2 more. But if he has to go through Djokovic, his chances are slim to none.

I don’t think he minds being second to Nadal. He doesn’t want Djokovic overtaking him though. However, he’s friendly with Rafa so I think he’s at peace with him going past him.

Federer has Rafa's number now on any surface other than clay. Djokovic would be the issue with how mentally frail Federer seems to be against this player. That Wimbledon 2019 final still haunts me.

Doubtful -His only chance is winning Wimbledon. That is the only place where his backhand slice is effective. On the other surfaces everybody knows that his backhand is a weakness and they attack it.

Nadal has won 2 of the last 3 US Opens he's played, and the US Open he lost was retired in SF.
So there is an excellent chance Nadal will win a 5th US Open and maybe 6th too.
Also, Nadal only lost 10-8 in 5th Set to Djokovic at 2018 Wimbledon with the roof closed, so we know Nadal can still win Wimbledon.
Even at 2019 Wimbledon Nadal wasn't far from Federer's level, because Federer needed a tiebreaker to win the 1st Set and then Nadal won the 2nd Set 6-1.

Rafa had Feds number for about 12 years then it switched, so I wouldn’t be too sure there couldn’t be another switch after Feds latest return.

As for Federer he will play 2 or 3 more years as long as Uniqlo will compensate him with incentives.

Why does he need incentives? The dude is already rich enough

Nadal can certainly do others, especially on HC, so that is a slight. But Fed is an interesting discussion for sure. Personally I think he can, at least once, make that run to a GS win.

Why do the very rich accumulate more money? Because they can. Much as we wish to pretend all our faves play for "the love of the game" only, it's hard to walk away from millions in endorsements, sponsors, appearance fees, perks, etc. What the players like Federer make a point of is that it's not JUST the money that drives them to continue playing.

Mind you, I'm not condemning them , I would probably do the same thing, LOL.

It would be a good narrative for the history books but I doubt it’s possible after double knee surgery unless the stars really align with a super easy draw.

Here’s a question: who has the better chance of winning a non French major next year? Federer or Nadal? I’m actually pretty 50/50 myself.
