Can we consider Nadal's RG 2017 run the most dominant one in the Open Era?

I just noticed that apart from winning the title without losing a set he didn't even drop 5 games in any of them!

What are you talking about? He lost 6 games to Stan in the final and 7 games to Thiem in the semis. He lost 11 games to Young in the second round.

It was delicious :D

Rafa this year will probably be more dominant than 2008/2017 because nobody will be in top form, so that will make it easier for Rafa's natural ability to make a huge difference.

I'd give that accolade to the IceBorg, 1978 RG. Dropped 1 game in a SF against a top 10 opponent, then proceeded to demolish Vilas dropping only 1 more game than Nadal did in the 08 final.

Feel like 08 has to have a strong case too and wasn’t there a French Open where Borg only dropped like 35 games total? I’m pretty sure Nadal lost more and that’s with PCB retiring early in their QF

Statistically, Borg’s ‘78 run is more dominant. But overall, I think Nadal’s ‘08 run was the best.

Yes it's between these two. I do think Nadal '08 would have beaten Borg '78 (equalising for technology / diet / fitness etc.). However, I do give a lot of credit to Borg decimating the clay field that year, making a clay stalwart like Vilas look like a complete amateur in the final, beating him for the loss of 5 games - only losing one game more than Nadal did to Fed in the 08 final.

He never played Young in that tournament, that was in Wimbledon. His toughest match in RG 2017 was in the second round against Haase where he lost 8 games.

Based on what?

he didn't play anyone good in that tourney. I mean his level was insane in absolute terms but top 3? it's clear you're judging by number of games lost only. his defense was very declined and he had to attack much more to not get exposed.

Playing aggressive is a weakness now

that isn't what I was saying. he had to play aggressive because he couldn't afford his defensive grinding as much. if he played someone better his declined retrieving would get exposed, but let's just agree to disagree on the level.

It barely gets talked about simply because it's not in what's generally considered his prime but losing 11 games total to Thiem and Wawrinka and winning 76% games or something is GODLY. It's definitely top 3, and I'd have to recheck 2010.
I agree with this. Plus, he was at his most fun to watch on clay, imo.

2010 was great and all, but I think its only distinction is that he won it without dropping a set. Which is great, don't get me wrong, but he definitely didn't play as well as he did in 2008 or 2012, at least. I think he knew he didn't have to put it all out there and just put in enough effort to win.

For me, it probably goes:

1. 2008
2. 2012
3. 2007
4. 2017
5. 2010

I sometimes switch around 2 and 3.

No way 2007 is better than 2012. In 12 he was even more dominant before the final than in 08, and he ran into Djokovic who himself was peaking in the final and would've probably beaten other versions of Nadal that day. But 2012 Rafa still beat him handily. I'd put 2012 closer to 08 than 07 or 17.

Dunno. His level in 07 was not far off from 08. I’d even put the last two sets of the final up there with the best he’s ever played.

Fed Wimb 2017 without a doubt. His tennis reduced Marin to tears and he destroyed a Berdych that handed out bagels to both he and Nadal on the practice lawn mere weeks before.

That was absolute peak Berdych, being the last man to dethrone Djokovic on the Wimbldon grass. Even making him quit it got so bad.

So to beat that and the blistered giant in the final? Sumptuous stuff.

I thought for 20 seconds you weren't kidding I might be losing my mind

Djokovic wasn't peaking in that final, IMO.
