Can you cross Natural Gut with Syn Gut?

I see Gut-Poly hybrids lots and have even tried. Is there a downside to mixing natural gut and and a syn gut hybrid? Would it matter which is on the mains or crosses? I have a syn gut string I really like but still miss the cool ball pocketing natural gut gives. I am thinking the combo would be excellent but am guessing durability to be significantly less. Who knows?

if you were to hybrid i'd recommend putting the natural gut in the mains and synth in crosses. You also have to keep in mind the tension stability difference between your nat gut mains and synth gut crosses.

Are you a string breaker?

Just go full gut. Dont see the point in putting a syn gut in the crosses (only to save a few $?).
More problems with marrying tension too.

Yep I have Head nat gut in the mains at 58lbs and Forten Sweet 17 at 56lbs in the crosses. The gut is the quality and the power, while the syn gut is the unresponsive cheap stuff.

By way of comparison, I have a full bed of the Sweet 17 in a same model second racquet.

I notice the gut in the mains significantly - power, feel, elasticity, spin and grip.

When a half pack of gut costs $50AUD and a full pack $100AUD then it is cheaper to just do the mains in gut.

I'll give full gut a go as well soon.

I used to use Tonic in the Mains and Prince topspin in the cross. Gut last a lot longer than synthetics so maximize both the durability and playabilty by using it on the mains.

A solid core with Natural Gut works. I've had hard hitters who got decent life out of this set up,

The hybrid lasts a long time, and you save a lot of money. Klip Legend full set=26 bucks. Klip Legend + OG Micro hybrid= little over 14 bucks. Much more economical, and the hybrid will last you plenty long.

Natural gut main and Forten Sweet cross is a fine combination. Great power, smooth control and excellent tension maintenance. I prefer the natural colored Forten Sweet as it seems to lock the gut mains better than the white. Used BDE performance mains for many years but have now successfully switched to Pacific Classic after trying Klip Legend and Babolat Tonic recently. I am staying away from the Global / Gaucho stuff as I am very sensitive to gauge variation.

Great replies and yes I am a relative string breaker. Strings last 6 -10 sets. The general advice I read is give it a try and string the Natural Gut on the mains. Thanks and I will let you know. I will also try some of the string combos mentioned.

I am trying out the VS/Bab Synth combo right now. It is okay, but I certainly prefer a full nat gut setup.

With this particular combo, Babolat Synthetic moves like crazy and is quite distracting. Feel is decent, but not much softer than my NRG setup and far "boardier" than Gaucho full setup I had before.

I am getting a stringing machine so that I can string up Gauchos myself from now on.

Agree.... but with kevlar or polys i put the gut in the crosses 99% of the time....

i string this set-up for a few of my customers...

If you're a stringbreaker, I'd recommend putting gut in the mains and a poly in the crosses at 5-7# lower tension than the gut. Synthetic gut is fine too, but the poly, being stiffer, keeps the gut from stretching to its max on hard shots, but since the poly is at a lower tension, you still get the feel of gut on most of your shots. With synthetic gut, I usually string it in the crosses at 3# lower than the gut mains.
