can you guys recommend a match with a lot of power hitting?

whether its getting launched off service like sampras, flipper, or krajicek

or watching the ball getting compressed off the ground like lendl, safin, or becker (indoors) behind the baseline

i just want to know whats a good match to watch where the power level went through the roof from both sides. no drop shots please :p

lol i have seen those youtube videos

the sampras becker match was genius, but it always made me laugh. so ridiculous was the ball-crushing it seemed almost childish. had to stop and ask myself "wow, is this really happening?".

For heavy topspin back and forth action, the first set of Muster-Bruguera Lipton is hard to beat and a thing of beauty.

For back and forth pounding, El Machismo style, Agassi-young Safin French is tough to beat. Agassi got too caught up in trying to prove he could go toe to toe with the much bigger man, instead of trying to mix it up and play Safin the way everyone would eventually learn is the right way. He for the most part did, but Safin just had the big man's edge. It was like a super heavyweight vs. a heavy weight.

gonna go old school on you for a minute, but the 91 french open men's final (courier vs. agassi) is MONSTER!!!! it would have been insane on hardcourt!

i'm sure any match with two of the following players:

Blake
Berdych
Gonzalez
Gulbis
Soderling

any two of these guys head to head will pretty much be a couple of guys hitting the ball as hard as they can all the time.

the Sampras-Goran Wimbledon match is a bash fest from the past, aces, winners, not many droppers.. last match before they changed the grass speed I think.

Anything with Philippoussis will consist almost entirely of power hitting. Off the top of my head I can't think of anyone who more hits bigger off both sides and that includes Muster, Gonzalez, Safin, Monfils and Lendl.

If you can find his match against Sampras at the 1996 Australian Open (a match the 18 year old Scud won comprehensively) you'll see some huge hitting. Pete gives the ball a real thump but Philippoussis makes him look positively frail.

How about Agassi- kafelnikov Australian open final (99?)

This match seems to be often forgotten, but it was a really great match. For the first two sets at least.
There are some amazing rallies in this match. Not to mention one point with a series of crazy backhands that left the crowd gasping.

Tsonga vs Nadal at 2008 AO. Sensatioanal, he crushed his groundstrokes. Destroyed Nadal. Even a fast runner like him couldn't do much. Or Roddick vs Federer at US Open 2007. Roddick was insane in the first 2 sets. Hardest I've seen him hit for a long time! Even Fed has to be at his very best.

D-Quick,

I also enjoyed Sampras vs Courier in their FO encounters. If it's on youtube it may be hard to appreciate in the small blurry videos but these 2 REALLY went at it with big serves and long rallies with mighty pounding groundstrokes.

Other matches that spring to mind are Agassi/Mancini at the FO, Agassi/Courier USO 1992, but these may be hard to find. Mark Phillipoussiss was the biggest hitter of the ball I"ve ever seen, (though he was slow and clunky), but I can't recall a match offhand where the other guy tried to go toe to toe with him. Most players realized the folly of that approach. I imagine if you can find footage of Gonzalez vs Flipper it might be funny, I wouldn't mind seeing one of their matches myself.

yes this match was played at a very very high pace and very very clean hitting from both players. agassi was awesome at the OZ open. .

Scud hit the ball huge.

I assume some huge serves in matches like Krajicek/rusedski LONDON99
or Krajicek vs sampras 2000 US...but the problem is they are very
serve/volley orientated.

One match not on youtube is Scud vs Safin Bercy 2000.

I disagree with the Fed vs safin better than safin vs agassi 04. Fed has a superb defensive game especially 2004-2007...

Watching pete vs andre at usopen 2001 the other day makes some of todays matches look tame.....these guys smashed it and kept the ball in court.

Actually I bought nearly 20 matches from this website if anyone is interested. Most of the tennis dvd's I purchased have been classic Sampras matches but they have a wide assortment of matches, past and present. I'm actually thinking about buying a few more matches such as the 1995 US Open Final between Sampras and Agassi. I can't copy and paste the website on here but if you do a google search on "tennis dvds" it should near the top.
