Can't Stop Breaking Strings

You must be an open level player.

rofl-- uh oh...

What are Aramid strings? I'm not very familiar with them.... Any links would be great! :)

I think someone said it before-- they're just a different braided form of kevlar-- think ashaway

Gamma sold a hybrid that used poly-coated 20 gauge steel strand, seriously. It is heavy. Never have to re-string your mains.

It was called Edge 20-- loved that stuff... until it sawed it's way through my frame  (it is indeed poppable though)

My strings break in the middle of the racket. The last two have been perfectly dead center on the cross and fifth cross from the top. That is a centered as optimal as you can be. The funny thing is the closer it is to the sweet spot center, the fast the break.

I know plenty of other players, some are juniors who are not physically large and you would never think by looking at them that they could break full poly in 2-4 hours but they do.

I can vouch for that-- He popped his last frame with me, dead center. 5 hours, maybe 1 shank?

I'm assuming you're referring to Jason and Dillon? Scary how fast they go through poly. They do play every day though.

Really!? I thought it was shank - tastic ;)

That actually merited a chuckle, as bad as it was

Let's take a step back here-- Assuming the OP is telling the truth and is playing juniors, we can assume that there is some sound form of technique here-- training every day for 2-3 hours will take a toll on any set of strings. YES there can be issues with technique and off-hits but at that level of play, we can (hopefully) rule them out.

Shankapotomusses are one story but if the user is breaking strings at a consistent mark, it's not due to shanking. Hitting spin v flat is another story entirely. Hitting with extreme spin may cause the initial point of impact to be around the 5th string from center-- "technically" this is an off-hit. Can it contribute to early string breakage? Sure. That is as topspin as it gets

Seems like instead of helping the original poster, this has turned into a "yes it can, no it can't" 5-yo back and forth.

To the OP, string breakage sucks-- it's costly and interrupts your series of play. If you're a developing player, it's part of the learning curve. If you're not particularly sensitive to string, you can try buying a cheap reel of poly and just rip through it as you normally would. Isospeed makes reels for 40.00 on TW. Pro's pro just came out with a fairly economic reel called black out and MSV makes poly for 76.00 a reel (similar to your Genesis).

Another option is to try the kevlar/poly setup. I know that it has helped several frequent string breakers. I've personally played with it and think it's a nice setup, very spin friendly if you're not particularly shock sensitive. Mishit with it, though, and you will wince. The trick here is to find a poly that will stay lively and acceptably tight to the point of popping.

As a general, slippery polys, or smooth polys will last a bit longer than shaped or textured polys but ultimately you seem to break both. Out of curiosity, what frame do you play with/ how old are you?

Best of luck

This is the one true Shankolicious thread. Too sweet to be sour, the strokes of this hour, who needs awesome power, just mishit baby.

Breaking strings isn't the biggest deal if you string your own. Maybe it's worthwhile to invest in a machine.
