Can't stop experimenting!!!

Fletch

Rookie
My name is Fletch and I have a problem, I am a string addict:)

I can't stop trying new strings and I really want to stop. I am always in search of the perfect string. I think I am tennis warehouse's dream customer!

Who else is like this??? How did you stop!!! I really want to commit to one string and just stick with it. What should I do, just buy 10 reels of something and HAVE to use it all the time:twisted:

Help! Is there a 10 step program for this??

I will be stringing a racket waiting for an answer...

LMAO, quite true but sad my friend. There's a trade off between every single string, whether you compensate its power, control, stiffness, feel, etc. You need to prioritize between its different aspects and choice accordingly.

one SA to another

Fletch - i feel your pain. suggest u buy max 2 sets of the same string at a time. check out the string trade section...works for me (being a fellow SA). i have a different string setup in each racquet and it feels great to pick which to hit with. we are blessed having this luxury.

just keep experimenting! If I were you I would never buy a reel until you find that perfect string which could be never since new string comes out all the time. Also, buying a reel isn't even that economical since you maybe get one or two extra sets.

I recently learned how to string and I am the same way. It helps a bit that I work in a pro shop so I get some strings for free from suppliers and others at a decent price through the store. I've recently started going outside of the store to try strings we DON'T carry ie: gamma, technifibre.. and I'm about to try Babolat Revenge because I heard good things. We carry Babolat, but not revenge. We'll see how it plays!

Don't be too hard on yourself. Some guys like to try different things, just to see if something else might be better than your current setup.

For those who are "tinkerers", the cheapest way to try out a new setup is lead tape. A couple of bucks and you can put together three or four configurations you've never tried before. (I'm a lead tape junkie.)

Next cheapest is strings. Ten bucks can make a racquet play like it's never played before.

If you stop tinkering with lead and strings, your tinkering impulse may make you want to try a new frame. That's more like two hundred. I tell my wife to imagine there were a drug she could give me that made me not want to purchase new racquets. If it only cost ten bucks every couple of months, would she buy it? Of course she would. That drug is called "string".

as nancy lopez said "just say no." wait, nancy lopez was a golfer, not a tennis pro. wait, wait, it was nancy regan! dang, i've got to stop smoking this natural gut from india.

I do the same thing, I have a reel of BB Alu, a reel of MSV Focus Hex, and a reel of Wilson Stamina (which I only use to do cheap hybrid setups), all of which are at the top of my favorites list for strings. But about once a month, I end up cruising the TW string department, reading a good review, and decide to order two sets of some rando string, sometimes I hate, and sometimes I like. If I hate it, I usually give the remaining strings to some of the buddies I hit with. They seem to enjoy it, they keep getting strings either free or for like $5. :( My lose, their gain...

I like you logic.

I originally purchased a stringer to save myself money, but in the short run, I've tripled my string consumption, but I justify that since I no longer pay $20 in labor for each stick... so maybe I'm breaking even? Can I at least tell myself that over and over while wondering why my beer budget keeps shrinking?

I am doing the same thing.

If I cannot work out a nice deal I have lined up right now with a company... I may stick to Genesis Typhoon. Amazing ****.

Well, I was a recovering addict. I had a setback, but believe that I have once again gotten back on the wagon. :)

Don't Stop!!

IMO, if you have the pockets for it, then continue to string whatever you want. Personally, I've come to find out one mans dream set-up might be your crappy, will never use again, set-up. But that's the beauty of being a string addict, only you can find that out for yourself. Don't take that away from yourself, b/c then you might just be settling when there is a whole slew of strings coming out as of recently. And don't worry, you'll find that set-up some day.... Lastly, it's not like its crack or meth, it's just expensive like it.

this is why those who say they will "save" money by buying a stringer are well, wrong.

I used to be like this... but I finally found a combination I am very happy with. Don't get me wrong if there is a blend or specific string out there that intrigues me I will be on it, but right now I have found something that I really like.

Good luck with that whole marriage thing...

The quest for the holy grail string is just like the search for the holy grail racket - you'll spend your life continually looking for it if you're not careful, IMO.
I occasionally will test out a new string but I'm much more focused on actually improving my tennis game and doing better at tournaments. There really is no substitute for hard work, IMO.
If you like tinkering around with different strings all the power to you, but I'd much prefer to be "addicted to success". :)

I think I may have hit rock bottom!

I have 2 freshly strung racquets but I am nagging my 14 year old son to string my third. He has finals now and is begging me to leave him alone so he can study. I am no longer just a danger to myself!

Oh come on. What are you asking for, 30 minutes? Doesn't this kid understand who pays the bills!

i blame me getting a machine thats were it all began for me....

I totally agree, I wouldn't be like this if I was playing $20 every time.

They have you right where they want you Rabbit, be careful! One string job at a time!

I agree there is new string coming out all the time, and new technology. I like your last comment, I feel much better now.

So true!

Bingo we have a winner! :) Too funny, I think I have a better chance settling with a string, that's sad.
And Lefty, since you have the most funny comment, I will send you all my leftover strings.

Well this makes too much sense, why would I do that.

I am playing with two sets of string now, Solinco Tour Bite 17 and Tecnifibre Black Code 17. I like Tour Bite a little bit more, seems like a little more power, but just a fraction more. I may have strung both of them up a few pounds too tight. I will go down 5 lbs and get a better feel for both strings, but they are both great strings, slightest edge to Tour Bite.

It's okay, you have company in the stringer anonymous club. :) I am pretty sure all of us suffer from trying all sorts of strings after getting their stringing machine.

It's just so much fun to try new string setup and knowing that you could just test so many different scenarios. I love it and will continue to try as many new strings that come out.

Luckily I don't have to do this with this tennis racquets as I love the KPS 88 or else this tennis habit would go from a minor expense to a very expensive one.
