Cap grommets for head microgel radical mp?

bc-05

Semi-Pro
Hey guys ive been using the search button trying to find which of the cap grommets of the prestige mp grommet sets would fit a microgel radical mp.. and it seems like only the old versions of prestige cap grommet will fit (though some claim that the graphene series prestige cap grommet fits).. however living in australia the amount of grommet sets available are very limited..

And currently in australia the only prestige cap grommets available are for the graphene touch prestige mp... which has 18x20 pattern.. however i am not sure whether or not these will fit the radical microgel mp.. can anyone please confirm if these cap grommets will fit my radical mp microgel? Thanks in advance

The MG Radical MP (TGK231 mold) is a true 95 sq in which means any Prestige (up to the latest 360+) grommets will fit.
The string pattern (18x20) is identical.
My suggestion:
TK238 - MG Prestige MP CAPs (not sold at TW any more but can be found around, not cheap but best quality and fit)
TK293 - Came in various colors on Innegra, Graphene (and XT, Touch) Prestige MP

I'll note that while the headguard will fit, it won't be perfect:
1. The very top may not seat all the way down
2. The cross tie-off grommets at the bottom are slightly wider than the hole
3. The 3 bottom side grommets will barely protrude from the holes. It'll be just enough to cover the string though.
They are supposed to be the same mold, but for whatever reason, the MG Radical mold (only one I've CAP'd) is ever so slightly "bigger" (#2 is because they use different bottom cross tie-offs so different grommets/holes are enlarged). If you want to use CAPs, I suggest warming the grommets up so they stretch and using lube to help the grommets through. Even then, you will probably still have the fit issues I've mentioned above, esp. #3.

cool info - do you have a photo or two to share? am keen to see what it'd look like as i have been thinking of getting one.
i think i still have a spare Flexpoint Prestige MP grommet somewhere.... suppose that'd also fit the Radical MP, even though there are the "cut out" sections at 3 and 9 locations... :-D
thanks.

The mold is obviously different. The prestige beam is thinner. the head size is identical (95 sq in, 615 sq cm). I am surprised with the tie off locations as the string pattern is identical.
I've CAP'd the MG Radical MP many times before. I don't recall having big issues, however, I assume you are right.

I’ve capped a MG Rad MP before and this is spot on. (y) They will fit, but not perfectly. Some of the grommet tubes will be too short to fully protrude through the frame.

Sorry, my Rad isn't capped anymore.

IIRC, retail Prestiges typically have a wide hole at the 3rd to last cross. The MG Rad (and most of the others I think) have the wide hole at the 7th main.

Edit: You can see it in the pics below.

Do you know of any way to fix this? Are there other cap grommets with longer tubes?

I tried on a IG Rad MP and this is the result

What troubles are you finding?

I CAP'd both my 360 Rad Pro's, albeit with the orange (Graphene non-XT) version.
Finding it hard to reach the top of the frame with the CAP Grommet, it feels like its a few inches short. I put them in the dryer to make them a little more pliable but it still won't reach unfortunately. Very aggravating process lol....

There's one issue: need to start at the top and work down.

trying that and im good all the way down to the last grommet hole by the throat. Feels like the CAP grommet is like 1/2 in too short and I can't get the leverage to fit it in the last hole.....
Do have a dremmel type grinding tool? Thats been helpful for me in the past by enlarging the corner hole a smidge.

That'll be my next resort if I can't get it to fit on the other side as well. Either im mechanically challenged, or this is a pretty difficult task to do lol. probably a combo of both ;(

I'm fairly sure I started at the bottom and worked up, at least I'm 100% sure that's what I did with my 360+ Prestige Pro's.

It was definitely a lot of hassle though to get the last few, and sometimes I'd have to use a hair dryer to re-warm them, then pop a few holes back in order to try and stretch it back over again.

It's also not necessarily about popping them in one-by-one, since as you've found out, the last few holes end up compounding the "missing" space you have; i just try and sort of seat the last ~3 grommets (so they're not in fully) and then push them all in together.

I think one of them i couldn't get the last grommet to come through the interior, but my stringer said he would sort that out when pulling string through.
