Carlos Alcaraz has the potential to be a BETTER player than Roger Federer

There I said it. I watched Federer since the beginning and I’ve been watching Alcaraz for the last 2-3 years and I can tell you the Spaniard has a higher ceiling than the Swiss. He's a very special talent. For starters, I think Alcaraz is a better baseliner and mentally stronger when compared to Federer. Yes I’m aware of what happened at RG 22 so don’t bother mentioning it, cause it happens, and I’ve seen enough of Alcaraz to know he’s one tough motherf*cker. Even Rick Macci himself admitted he hasn't seen anyone like this guy in the last 30 years, and he's coached the female GOAT.

I have no doubt he’ll achieve great things in the future; however, I don’t think he’ll have the same success Federer had. Alcaraz’s generation is way more talented than Federer’s generation so unfortunately for him, he won’t have Federer’s luxury as the competition will be fierce. Roddick, Hewitt and Baghadatis are really nothing compared to Medvedev, Sinner, Hurkacz, and Auger-Aliassime. Besides, Carlos seems like a guy who has other interests in life than to keep hitting a ball until he’s 45 years old like Federer. Anyways, that’s not the point.

The point is I believe The Spanish Achilles has what it takes to take Federer’s game to the next level. He'll be performing and playing tennis at a higher level. That he’ll do should he put in the effort. His backhand and RoS still leave a lot to be desired and not at Fed’s level yet but he’ll get there. Federer kept improving even in his 30s so Carlos has a lot of time ahead of him to improve.

One more thing, I’m not sure of this but I can see him becoming even a more popular player than Federer in the future. Two reasons, he’s better looking and more personable in the social media, all what’s left is success which is coming his way soon!

Carlos is close to Federer now, he seems to have the chance to surpass Roger, game wise.

I still don't see it yet.
Carlos has great speed, defense to offense. Great attack on the FH side. Nice patience on the BH side.

I need a little more aggression at the net and see him volley from almost the mid court controlling the point to see the creativity levels of Fed.
Carlos use the drop shot well and that has set up some nice cat and mouse points at the net, but it is a different skill set the Fed's offensive net play.

Need to see more spot serving from him in addition to power serving. And I think this is a part of his game that should be able to get there.

His FH is great. From a creativity perspective still feel on a great day Fed was able to take it earlier and bring offense out of nowhere.

In the end we'll have to see, but he certainly has the potential.

To be better player than Federer you will need 7 ATP finals or 21 grand slams. He is sooo far away. And you will keep shouting alcaraz is overrated the moment he will have bad patch too. :D
Everything was possible in the Srichaphan era. With multiple GOAT contenders and a host of talented challengers, Carlos's competition really can't be compared to the mythical years of Baghdatis and Gonzalez landing slam finals.

Federer's net game has always been vastly overrated. He has some amazing highlights which I give full credit to his great hands for, but in terms of consistency he's really just a finisher, not too different from Alcaraz, whereas people act like he's some sort of serve volley/aggressive baseliner all court hybrid - like Sampras.

Definitely not like Sampras. If you put Sampras as the Gold standard, I'd put Fed a level below Sampras for coming forward and volleying. Both these guys had the ability to pound volleys like high speed groundstrokes off of both sides. Sampras would do it out of nowhere. Fed would have to set it up more. But there are plenty of times he'd come forward from the baseline where no one today would come in.

So I feel Alcaraz really needs it set up for a volley put away. Tiafoe tries to do it, but isn't as successful. Alcaraz is more in the Nadal zone of volleying. They'll volley if the time is right. Whereas Sampras and Fed found ways to make the time right.

So I'd probably say
Level 1 Sampras
Level 2 Federer
Level 3-4 Nadal/Alcaraz
Level 5--rest of tour

Very fair. Roger does have outstanding hands that let him get away with poor form and setup.

Can we talk about how much better Federer is than both Alcaraz and Djokovic? And how Federer has an even better forehand and drop shot than Alcaraz?
And Federer holds the record for most matches lost despite having match points
If that had been Federer yesterday serving for the match against Djokovic, he would've been broken and lost the match.:-D

Would not describe Carlitos as better looking but he might turn in to a handsome beast one day (not). Roger has style and an aura about him that no other player can match. Apart from that Carlitos is a disaster in interviews (English). He does not know how to connect IRL. But he's a nice kid and I wish him all the luck in the world. Except against Holger!

Roger has an aura because of his accomplishments and being one of the greatest.
If he was a guy who never won anything significant and was just another player in the top 30, nobody would care.

Thats only part of it, its the way he moves his body perfectly like no one else with the most perfect technique its beautiful and the amazing shots and great personality as well. Djokovic has the accomplishments and one of greatest too but its not even possible for him to achieve that kind of aura

Alcaraz is only 20 years old, how many slams had Roger won at 20? Chances are, if he stays healthy, Carlos's game will improve. Fact is though, Carlos already has a great all-court game.

It wouldn't even come to that since he'd win a tiebreak and thus the match.

That's exactly what's made him so endearing, as opposed to a polished corporate image you can buy off Amazon™

We can when it's true. In other words, when we compare peak 30s Federer to retired, exhibition era Alcaraz. Bump the thread when we get there

Yes, I agree. But there was something to build upon with him and it was an answer to the comment about Carlitos being better looking than Federer.

I'm confused by this thread. Federer is the best of the Big 3, so people predicting he'll be better than Fed think he'll be end up as the GOAT?

Or a more reasonable assumption is he might be at least better than Nadal, who is clearly 3rd wheel

Greater? Possibly with what I see coming up in the ranks in their 20s. ... Better? I dont think so.. Since he won't have two GOATs to contend with other than potentially Sinner

You have a promising career in comedy. I assume you refer to Roddick, Federer, and Hewitt?
