Carlos Bernardes is blind.

I just finally found this point I've been looking for for a while. It's the infamous point in the Kiefer-Grosjean 2006 AO QF, where Kiefer throws the racquet.

And who's the chair umpire who allowed that awful call to stand? Carlos Bernardes...the same guy who allowed the awful call in the Blake-Gonzalez Olympic match to stand.

So let's see...the guy can't see a racquet get thrown in the middle of a point, can't see the ball hit Gonzalez's racquet...how do blind people get jobs as chair umpires?

Or that line judge who overruled that call against Serena in her U.S Open quarterfinal with Capriati when she hit a winner many inches INSIDE the line, not even touching the line. Or the line judge who gave Sprem a point in that tiebreaker vs Venus hitting a backhand down the line after her first serve was called out and Venus was moving back to receive serve, and continued to call the wrong score as players stayed on the side 1 point behind his score.

Don't forget the terrible call in the Wimby 08 Final. In the replay, you can clearly see it was way out.

if you look at the replay though, Grosjean made contact with the bottle right as or milliseconds before Keifer threw the racket. Sure the racket throw was unsportsman like, but Grosjean made contact with the ball before? so why does it matter

Gotta agree with that. But even if Grosjean did hit the ball before Keifer threw his racquet, I think they shouldve give the point to Grosjean, that was completely unprofessional.

Grosjean didn't even notice the racket until after he missed the ball and looked up. Originally he looked down and was upset he missed the volley, then he saw the racket and complained. Yes it was unprofessional, but the racket didn't hinder Grosjean.

I remember a Graf/Garrison match I believe, where Zina Garrison said something out loud during a point, and after Graf missed either her next shot, or the shot after that, she, Graf, complained to the umpire and was awarded the point based on a hindrance.

I thought u had to stop the pt immediately to claim a hindrance??

I disagree. He still could have seen it in his peripheral vision.
I downloaded the clip from youtube and played it frame by frame.
Just before the moment of contact, the Kiefer's racquet was well out of
his hand and in mid air above the net and at the center net strap. That is
well within Grosjean's peripheral vision and in this case, wouldn't you have
to give the benefit of the doubt to Grosjean? Even if he's staring right at the
ball, Keifer's racquet is well within his sight and had already traveled
several feet and he also swung his arm in an obvious motion to throw the
racquet.

I wish Keifer would have done it against someone like Safin or Youhnzy.
Then it would have gotten interesting...

This is not correct. Here is the exact frame just before Grosjean made
contact. I circled Keifer's racquet so that you can see where it was in
midair at that moment.

That was in Wimby '07, to be precise. There was no umpire involved, so I fail to see how we shouldn't forget it for the purposes of this thread.

Anyway it certainly looks barely out, and that's what the linesperson called, but it is difficult to say with certainty from that take.

He called it out though. He doesn't have the power to overrule Hawkeye I believe.

I agree with you. It's very likely he saw the racquet as it was released from Kiefer's hand and it distracted him.

What does that have to do with a thread about Carlos Bernardes?

Hey, did you figure out the meaning of life for yourself, after the Gonzalez vs Blake match @ the olympics? (That being of never letting anyone forget about it) Jesus, I've haven't been on these boards more then a year, and even I'm sick and tired of your posts with all the whining. Every time I see your name under a topic / last poster, I just know what's there. Yes, we all know Gonzalez touched the ball, and he probably felt it. Yeah, incident on this video in this topic is a terrible messup, but there was no way the umpire could of seen, if gonzo touched the ball, since he was looking in such angle. So you can't call the man blind for that incident. However this one is a big nasty screwup.
