Carlos Moya: “Rafa (Nadal) was exhausted”

Interviewed by Spanish television, Carlos Moya, the coach of Rafael Nadal, returned to the reasons why the Spanish player had given up participating in Wimbledon and the Olympic Games. “The tour on clay was very difficult, with a lot of physical and mental pressure. Rafa finished exhausted. He’s going to take a well-deserved rest. It’s a marathon, a long distance race in which some tough decisions have to be made and he felt it was best to stop and come back stronger. Two years ago, Rafa had reached a point of great mental fatigue from which it had been very difficult to come out and he interpreted that he was close to it again. He can’t afford to play a Grand Slam if he’s not 100%. “

“Mentally complicated to face confinements before a big match”

More than the effects of the defeat against Novak Djokovic in the semi-final at Roland Garros, the coach also highlighted other parameters. “There is also the fact that there is a week less than usual to prepare for Wimbledon, as well as the context in which we are in with the pandemic. It’s mentally complicated to face confinements before a big game, playing with little audience, etc. It affects Rafa, and it was difficult to go to London with a quarantine in between. “

Moya finally returned to the famous semi-final at Roland Garros. “It was a game similar to the one they played in Rome a few weeks ago. It was very close but Novak was better in the important moments like at 5-6 in the third set. He also let Novak return to the game at 5-0 early in the game. Rafa made too many unforced errors and he was not up to his level on serve or on the backhand. Novak has an impressive mind, a determination rarely seen in the history of sport. Everyone in the Big 3 has improved. »

Everyone in the big 3 has improved? How does that kool aid taste, Charlie?

Now hire Becker.
The trouble with Becker is that he wants total control as a coach. He was pushing Vajda out of the way. So Djokovic had to say, in effect, Vajda stays because he's more than a coach to me. So Djokovic had to show Becker the exit.

Family is very important to Nadal obviously. He can't hand that much control to Becker. Another issue is: Becker took over as Djokovic's coach when Novak was 27, so he was in his physical prime. Rafa is 35 now.

That is NOT what happened but apparently we cannot have this discussion without the threads getting brownholed.

What’s the deal with so many threads on here just getting deleted for no reason?

Moderators here have a VERY low tolerance for controversy and arguments.

My thread on Becker was going really well and tons of people were discussing the rumors with respect and keeping it clean.

I went to work, stopped paying attention to the thread for less than an hour, and it was gone.

Strange, I posted something earlier that wasn’t trolling at all yet it was removed for “trolling”
Someone must be reporting them I bet

Actually, Vajda is the one who suggested Becker to Djokovic.

Becker was just a bad influence on Nole off court; that's MHO! :-D
But he did his part in Djokovic's improvement of serve and volley to help switch from 2011 Djokovic to 2014 Djokovic. Which was the goal of it.

While Djokovic also matured emotionally - Gencic, grandpa, marriage, becoming father.

No doubt about it and I'll be eternally grateful to Becker! Boris just made too many bad decisions in his personal life that will eventually drag everyone down with him! I'm surprised he's lasted this long! :sneaky:

Best teachers learn from their students what their students can teach them. Two way exchange with benefits is the only way any relationship can last.

Unfortunately for the Djokovic team, there was more going on than a bad elbow that kept Nole out of the winning circle for well over a year! I can only imagine the influence Becker had on the situation; hence he had to go! I'm glad Nole's back on track with few able to stop him from writing all new records for "The BOOKS!"

I have so many people on ignore it's often easy to miss stuff. Thanks for the correction.

Sorry if I came off rude, the thread was about why Becker left and why he hasn't come back. Reasons are entirely personal and nothing to do with tennis, and nothing to do with any dislike between him and Djok either.
