Caroline Wozniacki diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis

Well this is a big blow for Wozniacki. After Wimbledon she was diagnosed with arthritis. There is no cure but it can be somewhat treated to relieve pain. On the positive side, she managed to win the Beijing Open and still qualify for the YEC. Hope this doesn’t derail her too much

Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki says she was "shocked" to be diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, but wants to become a role model for people with the condition.

The Dane, 28, discovered she had the auto-immune disease in August and says "it has been a lot to take in".

Rheumatoid arthritis causes pain, swelling and stiffness in the joints.

"You feel like you're the fittest athlete out there and all of a sudden you have this to work with," she said.

Wozniacki - who won the Australian Open in January, her only Grand Slam to date - revealed she had the condition after her season ended with defeat at the ATP Tour Finals.

She said she began to notice symptoms of fatigue after Wimbledon, where she lost in the second round, and one morning was unable to lift her arms over her head.

The world number three says some days she has struggled to get out of bed and doctors diagnosed her in August before the US Open.

"In the beginning, it was a shock," said Wozniacki. "It's obviously not ideal for anybody, and I think when you're a professional athlete, it's also not even more ideal.

"I think I didn't want to talk about it during the year because I don't want to give anyone the edge or thinking that I'm not feeling well, but I have been feeling well.

"You learn how to just cope after matches. Some days you wake up and you can't get out of bed and you just have to know that's how it is, but other days you live and you're fine. You don't even feel like you have it."

Rheumatoid arthritis can affect people of any age, although often starts when a person is between 40 and 50. It occurs when the body's immune system targets affected joints, leading to pain and swelling.

The NHS says there is no cure for the condition, but medication and other treatments can relieve symptoms.

Wozniacki has been taking medicine and receiving treatment to manage the disease and is positive the condition will not impact on her career - she won the China Open earlier this month.

"I think [winning in Beijing] meant so much to me," she added. "I think you obviously start asking yourself questions: What does this mean? Does it mean I can't get in as great of shape as I was before?

"Winning was huge. It also gave me the belief that nothing is going to set me back. I'm going to work with this and this is how it is, and I can do anything.

"I'm very proud of how I have been so positive through it all and just kind of tried to not let that hinder me.

"I know there are a lot of people in the world that are fighting with this, and hopefully I can be someone they can look up to and say that if I can do this, then they can too. And you just kind of have to get together and pull each other up."

I don't mean to gloat, but why did she decide to tell us now, when she just pulled out of the YEC? Seems too fishy to me, no? Again i don't mean to gloat and i feel bad and wish well for her, but what's up with keeping it quite for this long if problem was persistent for quite a while?...

It says it in the quote I posted.

"I think I didn't want to talk about it during the year because I don't want to give anyone the edge or thinking that I'm not feeling well, but I have been feeling well.

I think that’s fair enough.

This thread is about her disease and you’re talking about her ‘fooling people’ and laughing at the timing of the announcement? Shame.

Lol. Whomever you are arguing with is on my iggy list, so these poasts just made it look like you were talking to yourself. :D

This is terrible news though. I feel bad for her that at only 28 she gets RA? I guess on the plus side, she already won her maiden slam, so she'll have that to cherish for the rest of her career. :)

I still don't understand how in 2018 after so much medical breakthroughs and advanced medicine we still don't have cure for things like this or cancer or some other things, it boggles my mind really.
I also can't understand why after all that practice, these pro players still can't hit an ace on every serve. It boggles my mind really.

Because it is an autoimmune disorder, and they haven't a clue where to begin with anything to do with immuno malfunction.

I have a post viral rheumatoid arthritis. After the virus (ross river fever) went away the immune system spazzs out and thinks joint tissue is foreign so is in a state of background war attacking it, on/off, forever. Something like that.

Though i wondered about her the other month, when commentators said that she ran marathons recreationally. She is not built for endurance running, and i winced inside thinking about her knees and hips when they said that.

Hope she figures out a way to put a lid on it.

Auto-immune diseases are difficult to treat. Nevertheless, don't underestimate how much medicine is helping everyone in the developed world. It's amazing what has been accomplished if you compare a regular life nowadays to a few centuries ago. When people get sick now, they almost act like something unfair has been done to them, while that's actually how life originally was "supposed" to go. And cancer is a disease that we're basically facing because we're so healthy and not in spite of it. (better said: because we're living so much longer than we used to before)
Lastly, RA can be treated quite well. No, it can't really be cured completely, but there are a lot of medical options you can go to to manage it. I wouldn't call it merely "relieving the symptoms" because many of those medicines do actually stop the inflammatory process from happening altogether.

(Repeated from a post I made in the WTA Finals thread):

Horrible news for Caroline. Let's hope the medical treatment she receives will enable her to keep on playing (at least she can afford the best) although I now expect it's going to cut her career shorter than she had planned. At least she attained her one remaining goal of winning a Slam before this disease has had a chance to kick in! :(

Sad for her, she's quite young to be suffering from this, but then again these athletes push their body so much, things like this happen. I'm sure that with all the money she's made from tennis, she'll be able to afford and have access to top notch treatment/doctors which will help her, which isn't the case for most "average joe". Modern medicine allow us to live healthier & longer compared to 50+ years ago, but there's still so many conditions and diseased out there, it's impossible to treat and fix them all. As with most auto-immune diseases, all you can really do is manage/lessen your symptoms because you can't eradicate the issue.

Are you kidding?! Please show some class...who would even think about "gloating" over something like this (rhetorical).

So sorry to hear this. Caroline has always impressed me as one of the most likable players - on either tour. Simply wishing her all the best.

Her game depends so much on defense, so this is bad for her if or when it reaches her knees (if it hasn't already). Wish her luck with it.

Very sad news for Caro who finally got her elusive Grand Slam title. Hope it doesn't get any worse, but with her style of play may have had some influence.
What a terrible year ending had 2 of the maiden 2018 Grand Slam winners, Halep with her hernia and now Wozniacki with the RA.

this is pretty bad. 3rd 4th and 5th finger joints all inflamed. it only gets worse from there. Remicade can control it but that medication has side effects. it is Good thing Simona let her win that Aussie open. even if she never wins another major, she can retire happy

Have a chat with Venus who also has autoimmune. Venus lost years and years of her career. She got it under control with her diet cutting out animal products. Don't know if it will help with Carol but it wouldn't hurt hearing Venus' input. Wonder how their relationship is since Carol is frds with Serena already.

One can catch rheumatoid arthritis at any age: there are 20 year olds affected.

It certainly puts an end to her tennis career: David Ike found his new employment as a guru after being forced to quit his pro soccer goalkeeper job: he still suffers from it to this day.

James Coburn, Kathleen Turner's careers got destroyed by RA.

There was no cure, up to now.

Google the Vitamin D Coimbra protocol: for the past 15 years, this Brazilian dr uses high dose Vitamin D (45.000 to 250.000 UI/day) to put RA and all other AI diseases in remission permanently.

It's been used mainly for multiple sclerosis, but they are now treating too cases of RA, Myasthenia Gravis, type 1 diabetes, Crohn, etc.

You need to live in a country were a Coimbra trained Dr lives: there's 120 of them all together, and the number of treated patients has now reached 4500 and counting.

Also, MSM has proved to reduce joint inflammation in RA: this is what James Coburn used and it helped him get back on his filming career.

Don't pay attention to conventional doctors; they're out to make a buck from your suffering.

Because if people stop dying, overpopulation becomes a problem and there would be wars for the limited resources.
Still the clock is tiking and sooner rather than later we should look towards the space

If you were a politician, i would really look forward at putting you into office.

Oh wait.

You already were.

Well, there is no cure for a lot of things.

Treatment is the best we can hope for in the majority of cases.

Tinnitus, Male Pattern Baldness (when completely bald), ALS, Phantom Pain and so on do not even have a (real) treatment.

There is a LOT to discover.

A very unfortunate development, and one that surely will end her career prematurely.

I hope that she receives the best possible treatment and support.

WOW....this really stinks for her. She certainly has been off a lot of this year after winning the AO but I just thought it was post first major malaise. Sadly this will probably mean the end of her career as a player unless she finds a way to manage and plays a fairly limited schedule...but even then. I wish her the best, she's certainly grown on me over the course of her career.

Sad news, I hope she can play on as long as possible, and more importantly, that she gets the best possible treatment for this disease.

As others have said, at least she managed to win a slam before this kicked in.

Perhaps not. RA can progress very slowly or have lulls without progression for a time. It's conceivable she can go a few more years and have very mild symptoms.
Yeah, that's how it goes for me.
fell it a little bit. then nothing. then maybe a flare up, like now, where my knuckles and joints and ankles and hips are all in pain, and I move like a zombie, and I get really fatigued too during flare ups. A full body weakness.

I just eat well, stay active, take supps, back off when it flares up. It is what it is.

Vitamin D in high dosis could cause other health issues. Not smart to do when you dont have tried convential remedies first.

Conventional remedies are unable to put RA into remission like Vit D does.

You will end-up in a wheelchair.

Vit D enables you to live a totally normal life as if you never contracted RA.

There are no risk if one follows the associated dietary guidelines (no lactate products, obligation to drink 2.5 liters of water/day).
