Carson and Easter Bowl Acceptance

I find it unbelievable how someone with one itf point has higher priority than someone who is top 20 in the nation but dosen't play itf tournaments. I understand these are itf tournaments, but some can't afford to play both itfs and national tournaments. These players who don't play itfs will drop in the rankings as both carson and easter bowl are level 1 national tournaments. I believe something needs to be done to change this. Any thoughts?

Hi,

I understand your point but I don't know if a perfect ranking system exist. ITF junior development goal is to identify the best juniors in the world and to that end, the player needs to play competition around the world. I think USTA is trying to meet that objective by having international tennis tournaments throughout the year in the US. In fact three of these tournaments will attract the top players in the world to come to the US so the US junior players will not have to travel far to compete. I don't know if a perfect solution exists but I know the US players have 19 ITF tournaments in the US, in 2010, if they want to travel that route.

Great post.

Great post.

This is not a great post:). The OP was questioning giving out the USTA National ranking points in the International tournaments where acceptance (and seeding) is not based primarily on the USTA National ranking. The problem is not limited to these 2 tournaments - all US-based International tournaments give away USTA National ranking points.

Don’t forget eligibility. With different age requirements you could turn 18 on December 31st of this year not even be able to play in the ITF tournament.

Hey that kid you said would not qualify was asked to play in those tournaments you said he would not get into ?Whats your thoughts?

Ah come on, haven't you ever been dominating a match so easily that you lose a little focus, make a couple errors, the opponent gets a let cord, and a game ends up getting dropped?

So the kid got in with a WC? or was it itf or nats ranking?

I was just teasing BB. We all know how this one ends, the boy either wins it or gets pulled out due to illness, injury, attitude, etc at the first sign of trouble.

BB would never let him lose to a boy his own age as that would burst the illusion. Frankly I am surprised he entered him at all. Mark my words....he will not let him lose in that tourny, he either wins or withdraws before a loss.

In the tiny chance he lets him lose, the excuse list will be epic. (playing sick, hurt, dog just died, was up for 3 straight days saving victims from the earthquake).

I think I cracked a rib laughing at the list of excuses! :) Let's see how it plays out... it's a tough crowd for the boy to deal with.

As I said earlier I am glad he entered and happy he is playing 16’s. How did he qualify? Was his #444 16’s ranking good enough to bypass the qualifying? The selection process does not say anything about wildcards.

He could have easily won a round in qualifying to get into the main draw either way. Glad you are not sticking to the crazy 18’s only plan.

What does "asked to play" mean?

What does "asked to play" mean?

No offense Mr. Madison, but you know just as well as anyone who plays junior tournaments that you sign up for a tournament in the juniors. The tournament director doesn't just call you up and "ask" you to play. That's his own little made up delusional world. Let's see what his answer is, if he even answers you.

I truly doubt that BB will let the kid play that tournament! There are a lot of players there who will beat him, and there is now way BB will let that happen! He could get beat by anyone of the seeded kids or even unseeded ones that are younger, like Kozlov, Kerznerman, Weirsholm, Restrepo, Nava and etc. He has no chance of beating the likes of Madregallejo, Papa, Garcia, Di Guilio, Aragone and etc.

I say, he pulls the kid out or waits for the draw to come out and if it s not favorable, pulls him (attitude problem, injury, sick, stomach flu and etc)

I agree 100%. This is the first time in years that he has entered him in a tourny where he will face top players his own age. The only other time he did it was the Eddie Herr years ago where Kozlov beat him.

Since that Herr, he has been sure to play up against low ranked older kids, the classic trick.....with withdraws mixed in when things were tough.

I will be very surprised if he lets him actually complete this tournament.

It is great to see DB playing 16s in both the Easter Bowl and the International Spring Championship in Carson. I hope he does well in both. I am glad his camp realized how crazy the 18s only plan was and made the right decision.

Eye's down in Socal tell me Deiton is advancing in ITF. I also hear he is not traveling with Dad. Maybe this is the formula. Jimmy Evert stayed home and Chrissy delivered. Hhmmm,, just a thought, just a thought!!

The winning will end today against Kwok. Too much experience and too much versatility in the game for DB. Nevertheless, two good wins for the kid!

My guess is the other kid Kwok will run into a 14 yr old wall and quit ,, just a guess though Deiton would be very lucky to make that happen with a kid so experienced over a 100 ITF matches to Deitons 2 ,

DB turns 15 in 3 weeks....April 23rd. I think Deiton might play well vs Kwok.

Boyd and Du Toit are low ranked boys, 83 and 123 rd. Still same old stuff....wins vs lower ranked boys.

The 16s in Carson will be the real test, some great players there. Don't withdraw him, lets see him play the better kids his age and see what happens.

If he loses , he can't beat tougher comp (kwok) if he wins which he will Kwok is a joke like your daughter , what will satify you LOL ? ask your daughter if she wants to visit a real coach Mr. Baughman he will have her steady against pros by the time she is 14 as a hitting partner.

BTW Kozlov is still 11

1. Lets talk after Carson, when he will face top kids his age.

2. He looked horrible vs Isner. Even at 33%, Isner's strokes were overpowering him.

3. My daughter looked at the videos and had a question for you. Why does he hit his backhand soft, like I did when I was 3?

I have to say that Deiton is not playing just against low-ranked older boys. By entering this event, he is going up against some guys who would not be there for those local 18-and-under tourneys he was entering previously. Boyd and Kwok are quite a bit older and seem pretty good from their records.

Oh yeah, one more thing....my daughter also wanted to know why she has larger leg muscles than your boy? Thanks.

She may have larger leggs but cause she's inner -city she will lack IQ , just kidding she will be fine plenty of government handouts these days ,,but if she needs a work-ethic call Mr.B

I have to eat my words! Never expected this result! That is a beat down! Kwok is pretty solid and experienced player and he is 17 years old. Why did he quit at 5 2 in the second. He might as well have given Baughman his win without quiting.

He was a little outclassed then after line judge over ruled him 1 x he was done ,,the kid had a huge serve and a big forehand but just wasn't enough today maybe next time they meet it could go the other way .

A lot

You get tennis a lot better then the self-professed coach on here ,,there plan has been stated from the beginning work his way up through the 18's and mens futures .

Stop already, these boys are 120 ranked ITF, 83rd ranked USTA, 123rd ranked USTA. Honestly, this is so silly, it is night and day top 20 vs these guys.

Kwok is obviously a points chaser. I hope we have all learned that volume of matches does not mean squat. With all those matches to only have 230 ITF points is pretty lame. The top boy has played 12 matches, 8 of which were Grade A. Kwok has played 30 matches of singles and doubles combined, only 1 Grade A, and only has 230 points. He is a classic rich boy point chaser who is really an average player. If he was the #1 seed at that ITF than that was a bottom of the barrel field in regards to ITFs.

If DB actually plays and is not pulled next week in Carson then we can talk about his status in regards to boys 14-17 USTA. Not to mention the top 50 ITF guys who would destroy him.

Carson will be the FIRST TIME he battles top kids since Kozlov demolished him at the Herr.

So I tease about leg size and backhand....and you come back with lack of IQ and government handouts?

Not sure where you learned to trash talk, but you went from friendly banter to a level that is inappropriate.

I am sorry are you not the one saying the Usta should give money to all the parks (handouts). And see what poor kid rises to the top ,,sorry you misuderstood me I was just saying you need Smarts and work-ethic to make it in this sport something I don't think you can provide for your little girl. Still waiting on a video of your WORK .
