Carson and Easter Bowl Acceptance

I think, with all things junior tennis, is that once you are out of the 12s/14s, the thing that matters most is hard work. Would I eschew the college option, no, but then again, I would have said that to any US male considering going pro instead of college. Too much growing and maturing to do, too much of a grind in the satellites/futures/challengers. Plus, without financing, who can afford that? If he keeps working hard, keeps having a great attitude, and gets help from the USTA or others, who knows. The USTA gave him a WC into this tournament, and he certainly made use of it.

One thing that struck me from yesterday's match. Right behind DB's court was a McEnroe quote on what defines a champion. To paraphrase: Dedication, and the will to win when you aren't playing your best.

DB gutted out that match yesterday, and whatever it says or doesn't say for his future, he earned the result.

TCF... All these guys are Brad Baughman? I mean your asking questions as if your speaking right to him.
I am now seeing the connections. The use of the word "kid" as well as "and". A real showman!:rolleyes::|

I agree 100%. I have said many times that I would recommend DB to any college coach I know. He would make a very good college player and any college coach would be glad to have a solid kid like him. I know several college coaches who could improve his movement a little if allowed to do so.

My kidding around is strictly with the dad who says all American coaches are worthless and mentally weak, only he knows how to make a Nadal, etc. When you say stuff like that, expect a little teasing to come back to you.

Great eye .....I was working on him last night and he told his dad and I " I played like crapp ,how I won was I guess all the hard work I put in and a lot more luck "

No worries Flash, he knows that... He's been here too long and is an intelligent person. We all know. Its so obvious.

Isn't this exactly what Nadal's tactic is all about?

Wow, talk about a leap off a cliff. Nadal does not dodge opponents, beat all the top boys by age 15, beat every top pro to become #1 in the world, only gets paid by actual rankings. Any excuses he would make are in a totally different context than to try and create the illusion of being a top player. You can't create illusions in the actual pros, you can in USTA juniors by carefully picking out opponents and strategic withdrawals.

Thats like trying to make the comparison that both guys like oatmeal so other aspects of their tennis must be equal.

By the way, if you were just being sarcastic about Brad claiming he had the next Nadal then ignore the above comments!

seriously this is the most entertaining topic in the junior section. It is really pretty much the only reason half the people are reading it.

It was mainly just Natard sarcasm in general.

I don't think there is anyway to know if you have a pro at the age of 15 there is so much change between here and there you just really never know. Only a very small fraction of junior athletes will ever even make one professional competition much less become a top level pro. This major reality became apparent to me when a close friend played football as a D1 starter on a team that won the national championship and still did not go pro.

I always just say aim high, do your best and accept the results.

True. The kid will be 29 and playing some challenger in Alabama and we will still be following him and dad. Sadly, the excuses and predictions will most likely be the same as today.

Yup, its all about the levels and they are scary in how fast they rise.

Tennis adds the extreme of being a global deal, you don't even know many of the top boys around the world until one day you find out how great they are.

Hard to aim for the pros only when you don't even get to see all the competition. Always keep college as the primary plan, those good enough for the pros will emerge.

No, just the back/side, couldn't tell the extent of that injury, and that came at a pretty significant moment in the match. Seemed to bother him most when he missed. On the movement, DB was getting killed on when his opponent hit DB a deep cross-court FH/shorter cross-court angle BH combination. Movement to the second shot was sketchy.

I too did not understand the failure to come forward -- didn't he have some good results at Easter doubles?

And, FWIW, no dog in the fight, just thought some might appreciate content.

I understand. Like I stated before, in the last 10 days DB piled up wins far more impressive than ever before, long three setters, against better opponents. I did not want his camp throw it all away with a built in excuse. Even if he loses today to Redlicki, who is a better version of DB with way more power and weight on his serve and shots, DB still had a good run.

He made the most of both WC and hopefully can finally stop dodging the stronger 16's, which is the age group he should be playing since he is out of 14's.

I do think Goldhoff was a good win, especially coming back like that. Shows a fighting spirit! I still, however, think that DB is a level away from beating boys like Madregallejo, Di Guilio, Papa, Corinteli who will be his competition in this tournament if he advances.

Btw, did you have a chance to see any of the aforementioned kids play?

Yes, if he keeps playing these types of events and winning some matches, that should solidify his standing among some college coaches. Good stuff.

Unfortunately, no.

It is fun, I enjoy the trash talking with Brad. The kid will win or lose despite what any of us type on the internet.

Who should win a boy with a national ranking of 23 or 445 ?

Depends on how the 23 was achieved, wins against top boys or strategically gathering points.

The fact is that once you get past the top 5-10 boys in an age group, the rankings can be tricky. Some boy ranked 25 might be a good bit better than a boy ranked 14.

Thats why you have to stick with the 16s. Play the top 10 boys several times, get to the top, defend the ranking. In my opinion that is his best way to improve.

You have a boy who can play some tennis there buddy, let him play where he should, the top of the 16s. Once he does that, attack the top of the 18s.

I agree. No one here knows what Deiton will end up being.

I understand the sparring of Brad with others, but it just too bad that they are using a 15 year old kid for their internet fun.

Good luck to Deiton. I hope he wins some big matches and shuts some people up.

Please understand that it is the boy's father that has started this whole mess in the first place. Do you expect no reaction to an adult's idiotic statements? Speaking of shutting up... I think it's the dad that everyone wants to shut up, regardless of how the kids does.

I find it unbelievable how someone with one itf point has higher priority than someone who is top 20 in the nation but dosen't play itf tournaments. I understand these are itf tournaments, but some can't afford to play both itfs and national tournaments. These players who don't play itfs will drop in the rankings as both carson and easter bowl are level 1 national tournaments. I believe something needs to be done to change this. Any thoughts?

agreed. 10 characters

My feelings exactly, thank you for saying that. The people who really wish DB success should probably take the high road and stop talking about him. The poor kid's got it tough enough as is.

True....and those other posters are missing the bigger picture. Brad has said he will not allow the boy to even consider college or apply to college or prepare for college because he says its the pros or bust. Brad says the boy has told his mother he wants to go to college. A fully paid college scholarship to a solid school can change a kid from a trailer park's entire future.

Our posts are aimed at trying to get a little reality into the father's mind, in case he is serious and not just bluffing about college. We could be doing the boy the biggest service of his life.

The poster that wants him to shut people up is being ridiculous. Every top pro was dominating the 18s and top ITFs and winning junior slams by this kid's age. Only a fool would advise him to even think about anything but college. There are no surprise LeBron James out there, they are dominating by age 15. This politically correct "no one knows what he will be"...yawn, we know what the top pros were capable of at his age, we know what he can do...2 + 2 equals college....and only if he keeps his grades up and keeps improving. Right now he needs much more work to even think about the top college tennis programs.

Doesn't it seem weird that a kid might be skinny and not developed yet can't have a future as a pro? I was wondering what about the kid that is 16 years or 17 years old and 6ft-6'1" and just 135-140 lbs but will gain muscle until he's about 19-20. If his technique gets better and his strength and stamina improve don't you think that there is a chance they could be a pro. It just seems that basically there isn't a single junior on the TRN or USTA ranking that would qualify as having pro potential. Maybe there is , if so which junior in the 15-16's would you see as a "pro"? Just wondering.

Good run for Deiton But Redlicki got him in another 3 setter. Still a good tournament for him.

(13) Martin Redlicki d. Deiton Baughman 4-6; 6-3; 6-0

Redlicki seemed more impressive than the #3 seed so far in this tournament, so this is not a big surprise. Also, he is higher ranked than DB in the same age group at TRN.

I notice he has an 11th grade blue chip older brother (Michael Redlicki) to practice against. That sounds like a good formula for success.

Deiton is the 6th ranked TRN Class of 2014, Martin is 8th. But it is what it is, Brad says he had a broken finger.

The next few years are all about positioning for these boys all chasing the same college scholarships, along with lots of foreign boys.

Dear TCF,
DB just got WCs from USTA into 3 big tournaments in a row.
What do you need to do to be able to get USTA WCs? You should drop from the regular school and tell everyone that you are planning to become a pro. This does not stop you from actually going to college...

What do you need to do to be able to get USTA WCs? You should drop from the regular school and tell everyone that you are planning to become a pro. This does not stop you from actually going to college...

1. The USTA hasn't produced a top pro since.....um, ever. Brad is as aggressive a man as has ever lived, he could convince most people his kid is Nadal. USTA WCs are the most worthless thing as far as telling talent on earth.

2. No, it does not stop him from college, that is unless your dad is the most aggressive and convincing man, you think your dad is all knowing, and your dad convinces you that looking to college as an option will make you mentally weak. So you don't prepare, don't get the grades, and instead of a fully paid scholarship to a great school, you end up paying your own way over a period of 10 years to a community college. Vastly different futures.

3. When your results are consistent, on video, from coaches who see you, in tournaments, and they show a rather slow, solid but not fantastic USTA boy, let alone how many foreign players are better.....you aim for the best college you can with every fiber of your being. You certainly don't tell people you will go pro when guys who can own you like Giron are heading to college.

So he withdrew from the Easter Bowl? Was he injured? It would have been a tremendous experience for him. I believe 14s is a Compass Draw now -- correct?

Number1coach said DB had a broken index finger at Carson. Yes, this year the 14s is compass.

14'S DIVISION - COMPASS DRAW
New this year, all 2011 USTA National Championships in the Boys & Girls 14's singles division will be played under a compass draw format. This is the same format that is used at all Boys & Girls 12's Singles USTA National Championships. Compass draws are non-elimination format tournaments where players advance to various draws dependent on the draw and round they lose in. Each player is guaranteed a minimum of four singles matches. There will also be a silver draw (round of 16 match losers) & gold draw (quarterfinal match losers), along with the other consolation draws.

If Deiton has an April birthday, he cannot play 14s starting on April 1 in USTA tournaments. Is this a USTA tournament?

WOW! Way to burn a Wild Card (and the USTA) ... kids are begging for those things! Sad, sad, sad.... I hope someone else got to use that wild card.

Check this out, you may see a familiar name on line 12. :

Perhaps a little match dodging? The smell of "losing" was in the air... the team ran for the hills!!

Both tournaments are on the same dates. I wouldn't necessarily consider it as "dodging" because Men's Open Events, especially those in So Cal attracts some top Juniors, top collegiate players (current and former), and some players who have played ATP futures and challengers. But it would have been interesting to see how he would have done against some of the best junior players of his age.

Same old same old. Lose to a decent kid in his age group, time to go back to the men's opens and then playing very low ranked 18s. Risk losing to another kid his age? Not a chance. Hard to say you have the next Nadal with a body of work of losing to kid's your age.

He must have been chomping at the bit to pull him in Carson. Several of us predicting he would probably caused him to chance it. He won't make the mistake again of entering him where top kids his age are playing.

The dodger's playbook, textbook. He has been doing it ever since Kozlov crushed him at the Herr years ago.

And he set it up perfectly. Take a wildcard....withdraw....then enter a men's open the same date. So now he can say the USTA won't let him in any tournaments vs the top boys. He does not have the ranking in the 16s, he angered them so no wildcards.

Perfect....now he has created a great reason never to play the top boys and he keeps his delusion going a few more years. The guy is the Einstein of dodging!

I am still trying to imagine what he told the USTA. The least he could have done is faked an injury and pull out. Pulling out after asking for a wild card and then entering another tournament is just way past anything I thought he might do. Way past.

Where are you Number1?

Don't forget the "broken index finger" excuse a week ago. Healed magically for the men's open.

This guy is very smart. I think this was the perfect way to have a built in excuse not to play any more top boys. Burn your bridges so you are not offered any more wild cards, now no choice but to play men's opens and low ranked 18s. The perfect way to keep the illusion going for a few more years. Losing to any more boys aged 14-18 would have ruined it.

Once again, I hope he is bluffing with the no college stuff. But this move is pretty extreme stuff.
