Casper Ruud #1 Watch Party

If Wimbledon points had counted, Nadal would have an extra 720 points from his Wimbledon SF. Giving him 6530 points. Ruud and Alcarez could both pass that if they win the US Open. So #1 would still be in play for both.

Thanks!

Honestly though. If Ruud won the US open beating Berretini, kyrgios, and Alcaraz or Sinner number one would be well deserved given his results and the enormity of that accomplishment. The same reason this thread is a meme is the same reason it won’t happen. If he does it, it ceases to be a meme.

You know, after watching tennis all these years, I have always only ever rooted bottom line for the integrity of the sport. ABZ, no unfair organizational prejudices, letting player order be restored to respective tournaments, keeping big 3 streak going so not to lose to tsitsishank type mugs, etc etc. Like those “saving tennis” posts people shill during slam season. But this is the absolute funniest and greatest thing I have seen in the sport for probably the better part of 5 years, maybe ever. The quest for motherf***ing CASPER RUUD, to be world No.1, with Nadal one slam loss all season, Djokovic ranked 7th, and Ruud not having won even a masters 1000. Casper Ruud as the best player in the world. This is funnier than Coria, Donald Young, and Garin one match from Wimbledon finals, combined. I love berrettini, and would really like to have seen a good performance by Nick, put money Cilic, and love sinner, but I am willing to throw all of that out the winner in Ruud’s Quest for #1. I don’t even know how this is possible; what butterfly effect fragmented the universe, however we got into this new dimension, I don’t care, all I know is that I am completely and fully in the Casper Ruud watch party.

I'll give props to Casper for beating Berr. But he is not any match for a focused Kyrios. They dislike each other so expect Nick to clown and disturb him and send him home early, especially on hard courts. I'd pick Casper if it were on clay.

If he plays and beats Kyrgios in the semis, I want him to do a mic drop during the post match interview with "hard courts" before walking away.

I missed the match but just see the scoreline. That was a sound spanking. How did he play?

Ruud played really well for the first hour and had SPs to give Matteo another breadstick in set 2... Berry fought back, and served for set 3, but Ruud broke back and was clutch from there on. Berrettini was weak, but he has a big hole in his game for all to exploit.

He seems to be off his game since grass season. Too bad since this was a good chance for him. Ruud showing he's more than a slow court specialist. SF of a fast low bouncing USO? Excellent result for him and he may not be done yet.

Nope. I'd say a ranking between 6-10 is more worthy. Definitely not #1. Right now Ruud is basically worse than Safina's #1 ranking years ago, considering he is w/o a Masters or 500.

The only way this can get worse is if he gets to #1 by winning the SF via a Kyrgios default, and then losing in the final to not-Alcaraz.

First slamless #1 since Rios, and only the second one ever

Everyone forgets Lendl was a slamless #1 for some reason. He made good in a big way after the fact, though.

The reason is the ranking system based on point average. Slams mattered far less rankings-wise, consistency mattered much more. Not applicable to the ATP era (1990 onwards). It's best not to take the #1 musical chairs that occurred at the time between Lendl/McEnroe/Connors seriously, YE#1 is the better indicator (although Mac's 1982 0-slam #1 still sticks out like a roflmao).

Everyone agrees that Ruud isn't a #1 player. Still, give the guy credit when it's definitely due.
People here seem to only have watched this year's RG final and base their opinion on that performance, along with his clay court titles.
He lost to Djoko in the semis in last years ATPTF, he narrowly lost to a great Alcaraz in the Miami final this year, lost to Djoko in Rome semifinal, reached RG final, semifinal in Montreal, now a US open semi. He has been steadily keeping his top ten ranking for quite some time now. Not bad by any means for someone who was pegged as a pure clay courter, and who only won his first HC tournament a little over a year ago.

He just keeps improving and developing his game. This US open, like in Montreal, he's been crushing his forehand as usual, serving very well, hitting BH winners from all angles, interspersed with drop vollyeys, amazing passing shots(dipping, slicing, and whatever gets the job done), lobs, tweeners, and varying his positioning, tactics and tempo.
Wilander, Corretja and Schett were pretty blown away by him today.

He'll definitely have a hard time beating Kyrgios, but I've been really impressed with his futher progress this season, no matter what happens.

Lads, we have a reckoning on our hands.

With Medvedev’s early elimination from the tournament at the hands of Kyrgios, Casper Ruud’s chances at obtaining the coveted spot at the top of the ranking boards have dramatically surged.

However, as with any goal, some hurdles will need to be overcome.

Firstly, a denadalization must soon occur on the other half of the draw. This must happen before the final if the Norwegian is to retain a fighting chance. Realistically, the potential denadalizers are strong era titans Sinner and particularly Alcaraz, both of whom are in the same quarter of the draw and only one of whom would be slated to face Humbalito in the semifinals. If not them, Nadal also faces a brutal gauntlet of Tiafoe and perhaps Norrie to lead into the semifinal.

Secondly, Ruud must actually win the tournament. No finals, no semis—a win. He squares off a possibly tired Berrettini (fresh off a riveting battle against Davidovich Fokina) on Tuesday, then potentially his greatest rival Kyrgios for the semifinal, and then (should everything proceed as planned—i.e. a pre-final denadalization does occur) Sinner or Alcaraz in the final.

I think we are all in for a Ruud awakening come Sunday... but that’s just my opinion. Stay tuned.
Let's hope Alcaraz saves tennis
