I was just wondering this. The only scenario where he takes world #1 is if he wins, right?Lads, we have a reckoning on our hands.
With Medvedev’s early elimination from the tournament at the hands of Kyrgios, Casper Ruud’s chances at obtaining the coveted spot at the top of the ranking boards have dramatically surged.
However, as with any goal, some hurdles will need to be overcome.
Firstly, a denadalization must soon occur on the other half of the draw. This must happen before the final if the Norwegian is to retain a fighting chance. Realistically, the potential denadalizers are strong era titans Sinner and particularly Alcaraz, both of whom are in the same quarter of the draw and only one of whom would be slated to face Humbalito in the semifinals. If not them, Nadal also faces a brutal gauntlet of Tiafoe and perhaps Norrie to lead into the semifinal.
Secondly, Ruud must actually win the tournament. No finals, no semis—a win. He squares off a possibly tired Berrettini (fresh off a riveting battle against Davidovich Fokina) on Tuesday, then potentially his greatest rival Kyrgios for the semifinal, and then (should everything proceed as planned—i.e. a pre-final denadalization does occur) Sinner or Alcaraz in the final.
I think we are all in for a Ruud awakening come Sunday... but that’s just my opinion. Stay tuned.
No if alcaraz doesn’t make final he gets #1 just by beating kachonov on Friday.I was just wondering this. The only scenario where he takes world #1 is if he wins, right?
Aah, super. Thanks a lot!No if alcaraz doesn’t make final he gets #1 just by beating kachonov on Friday.
Hope he doesn't..It all rests on Carlos’ small, puny, 5’3” shoulders.
I shudder at the thought. Although Ruud is a very nice and genuine person, and I have nothing bad to say about him.
I would absolutely loved it.3 steps only.Alcaraz losing before the final,Kasper winning SF and losing FSo Casper Ruud could theoretically become #1 without ever having won an event higher than an ATP 250 in his career.
Good Lord. What a disaster that would be.

I watched him get completely obliterated by Zverev in Cincinnati a year ago. This guy becoming #1 would tell me something is serious screwed up with the tennis ranking system.I can't even remember a single match this guy played before Roland Garros this year.
Wouldn't it have been the same even if wimby had points? Possibly nadal could have been #1 with his additional wimby points, but otherwise with the current results for everyone else, it still seems like the same ranking outcome.I don't get the Ruud hate honestly. If he wins the USO, he has a rightful claim to #1 with that and the RG final. What is the rightful #1 anyway? The rankings are all screwed up because of no points at Wimbledon. Since they screwed up the rankings, this is the result.
Well now that I look more into it, yea that's correct. Nadal would have lost it either way if they won the tournament. However, it would have closer and he would have great chance to be YE #1 in the fall. With Wimbledon points, he would have 6500+ right now. Ruud's max would around ~6700 (with a win) and Alcaraz's would be around ~6900. Now the gap is going to be bigger if either of these guys win the tournament.Wouldn't it have been the same even if wimby had points? Possibly nadal could have been #1 with his additional wimby points, but otherwise with the current results for everyone else, it still seems like the same ranking outcome.
ok. got it. It wouldn't negate he's playing against a very weak field since he didn't meet a top 10 player on his side of the draw, yet again! Lucky Ghost.I was saying if he won. He’d be a slam winner, which would not even be close to worst number one ever.
He did beat Rudd easily in Miami. It should be the same result here.Let's hope Alcaraz saves tennis
But everybody knows that Djokovic, Nadal and Medvedev are far superior. Ruud had an easy path to the FO final and then was embarrassed by Nadal winning a grand total of 6 games. He would be the worst #1 in the history of tennis.I don't get the Ruud hate honestly. If he wins the USO, he has a rightful claim to #1 with that and the RG final. What is the rightful #1 anyway? Or…. Maybe it’s just that everyone ranked ahead of him has gotten worse?I watched him get completely obliterated by Zverev in Cincinnati a year ago. This guy becoming #1 would tell me something is serious screwed up with the tennis ranking system.
Wouldn't call Med superior. He's also one of the bad no.1's.But everybody knows that Djokovic, Nadal and Medvedev are far superior. Ruud had an easy path to the FO final and then was embarrassed by Nadal winning a grand total of 6 games. He would be the worst #1 in the history of tennis.
He's better than Ruud.Wouldn't call Med superior. He's also one of the bad no.1's.
Medvedev is definitely not far superior to him this year. Djokovic and Nadal are though but Djokovic didn't play 2 Slams and none of the hardcourt Masters. Federer, Djokovic, Murray and Wawrinka all got destroyed by Nadal at RG. He's not alone in that regard. But everybody knows that Djokovic, Nadal and Medvedev are far superior. Not by a 36 year old Nadal though, while being 12 years younger.Medvedev is definitely not far superior to him this year. Nadal was 34 when he crushed everybody including Djokovic at 2020 RG. What's the difference? Not by a 36 year old Nadal though, while being 12 years younger.

Or vaccine and political bans are artificially doctoring the rankings? Djokovic would have at least an additional 3,000 points if he were permitted to play AO, IW, Miami, Cincy and USO. If Med were permitted to play the grass season, he probably would have picked up another 500 points or so.Or…. Maybe it’s just that everyone ranked ahead of him has gotten worse?
Age doesn't matter when someone is just far superior to you on a surface. Thiem was the best the sport had to offer outside of the big 3 and he got destroyed multiple times by Nadal at RG.Djokovic wasn't 12 years younger?

Well, then that's a problem.Age doesn't matter when someone is just far superior to you on a surface. Thiem was the best the sport had to offer outside of the big 3 and he got destroyed multiple times by Nadal at RG.
Nadal is just a different beast on Chatrier court. Only two guys have been able to take him down. Not really a good barometer to use to measure Ruud's skills or lack thereof.Says something about the quality of the best the sport has to offer then.
2017 Nadal yes. I don't think his other older versions were really that amazing that he would've beaten everyone else. His competition at RG hasn't been good in his 30's.Nadal is just a different beast on Chatrier court.
Nadal upped his level after that FAA match. I'm sure if he played like that, Ruud would have played him a lot closer but that was a RG final and by the time he reaches that stage, he's unstoppable and goes into another gear. Being destroyed by Nadal at RG is par for the course. There are better factors to use to say he shouldn't be #1 than that one.Well, then that's a problem.
I understood your initial point, but bringing up that Federer, Djokovic and Wawrinka also got destroyed by Nadal doesn't have much value here when they weren't facing a mid 30's Nadal with an age advantage. I doubt Fedovic would get destroyed by 36 year old Nadal.
Let's stop pretending like every version of Nadal is the same. This one even got pushed to 5 by FAA.
Come on, Casper. Do it for the LOLs.
The Ruud guy is a nice person. It all rests on Carlos’ small, puny, 5’3” shoulders.
I shudder at the thought. Although Ruud is a very nice and genuine person, and I have nothing bad to say about him.
No titles above 250, 3 top 10 wins in the past 52 weeks (maybe you can count Berrettini at the USO and Hurkacz at RG), not much of a peak level yetI am confused why Ruud gets so much hate on this forum compared to a guy like Kyrgios. People don’t like a success story of a guy putting in the miles, shoring up his weaknesses, and putting himself in position to be highly ranked? Don’t we criticize other guys for NOT doing what ruud has done with his serce and BH the past year.
That was the last thing on my mind anyway.Nadal upped his level after that FAA match. I'm sure if he played like that, Ruud would have played him a lot closer but that was a RG final and by the time he reaches that stage, he's unstoppable and goes into another gear.
