Caster wheels for Gamma X-ST stand

I have a 5800ELS, and snagged some 8mm casters yesterday at HD. I forgot to take one of the bump stops off the stringer yesterday before going to HD, so I just guessed when I bought them. Got them home, took out the bump stop, and realized my mahcine takes a 12mm stem size. I realize this thread is for the X-ST stand, but has anyone possibly sourced some casters that would fit the 5800?

I think I read somewhere that the 12mm casters with brake are hard to come by, and may be a British sizing.

I wouldn't be surprised if the shaft is a 3/8" shaft, but I have no way to confirm atm. It's likely an imperial sizing. shoot an e-mail to cad@gammasports.com and see what John has to say ;)

Please let me know how it works out for you. I also have carpet and been thinning of putting it on casters. Thanks.

Received the casters yesterday and they work great. No issues at all and they roll smoothly on pretty thick carpet:

GlenK is that an extra tool caddy you built out on the side of your machine?

No, that's just the tool trays on the side that I just keep pulled out. Handy for additional tools.
I had the thing for awhile before I noticed them. Duh, lol

I string on a Gamma 4000 on a stand at home. Anyone know if the holes are the same at the ST stand? Would be interested in getting casters as well.

I'd be interested to hear about your experience with those wheels locked down on tile or hardwood. Are they pretty slick?

Thanks!

I really don't know how they'd work on those surfaces. The other link you posted looked like it would be better on a harder surface. They really don't cost that much. Someone could order both and keep the set that works best.

In my situation these were clearly the better option. These do seem a little slick but do think they would hold well on a harder surface. They are only $15.60 for a set of four so it would be worth a shot.

I believe it's a different thread/bolt size (larger bolt, don't know the thread size). I bought the casters from Gamma for my 6004.

A quick call to Gamma (John) will get you the info you need.

I bought this on amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009PF8UB2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and they fit, well sort of, the screw only goes about half inch inside the hole, but I solve that with 3 or 4 washes, thats it it works great

Before anyone goes and buy them to try them out I will post pics...

Half inch into the hole because it's bottoming out, or because the threads don't match (cross-threading)?

IIRC it's because they are bottoming out, as the holes aren't that deep. You probably don't actually need any washers if there's a way to torque them down, tbh.

Not a good idea to remove the washers and apply more torque to try and fully seat the caster. The result will likely be stripped threads in the Gamma base and a trip to the local machine shop for repair..

Continue to use the washers. The casters might occasionally come loose, but probably not that often.

Another option is to cut the end of the threaded stud on the caster. Use the combined thickness measurement of the three washers to tell you how much to cut off. It might be a good idea to cut a little less, and then cut a bit more if the first cut was not enough.

Hi my friends,

a little background i used the caster from the guy before me posted, the rubber black ones, the ones that you usually see in office chairs, I did this 2 years ago when I bought my stand, but after using it 2 years, they became very slow and was a little difficult to move the stringing machine, do not get me wrong it move the machine from point A to point B, but it was a pain in the ***, so I spent a fairly amount of time thinking and looking what to do...and here is the result :

If you see my previous post you will see I bought this casters http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009PF8UB2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 , and they did not go all the way up because the kinda do not fit the treads.

Even thu I looked up in the internet the conversion of M8 * 15 *1.25 would be 5/16-18 in UNC metrics.

Well I was satisfy because they were rolling great, but suddenly I step on one of the legs and the caster came off and I could not screw in again I thought to myself that I damage the tread inside the leg where I screw my caster on.

So at this point I was done with it I was going to take everything off and put back on the steady things and not move my machine.

But I thoungt maybe I could replace the inside thing where I screw my caster which I thought I damage the treads, so I took the cap off: http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums...4-396B-4F75-93DB-69CF16A79553_zpsb3y4ssi1.jpg

And to my surprise I saw that it was a Hex nut all the problem : http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums...F-69B9-4430-BF3C-AE44842CD42B_zpsxktx581s.jpg

This Hex nut was inserted in a hole, so I took it off: http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums...1-59ED-471B-B452-2BD2BFFFAAEE_zpsbuh63mh2.jpg

And put inside this Hex nut that I knew it would fit my caster wheel : http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums...4-1C80-448A-8E5C-21A30E8BFAA2_zpsbxafiuq3.jpg

But it did not fit the hole: http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums...C-5ACD-4D6C-9D13-5413D1B3D57E_zpspksacqb4.jpg

But with little help of the hammer I snug it in just perfect: http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums...1-4D08-488F-89F6-8CDC49C8096C_zpso2vyoosg.jpg

Here is the difference of the Hex nuts, on the left is the one that came with the stand and in the right the one I bought in Home Depot: http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums...8-3316-4979-9991-2C5D9966720E_zpsbwzjoeds.jpg

After this I pop back the cap in the leg and screw my caster in the new hex nut and voila eveything went thru easily , now I can but all kind of caster with the size 5/16" Diameter, UNC18 Threaded Stem and all will fit ..... the final result: http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums...8-EFF0-458F-A59E-031D84F27CB3_zpsll98lkkr.jpg

So there you have all you have to do is to change the Hex nut inside the cap in each leg, and voila, changing all 4 took me about 10 minutes, very easy.

And do not worry about the lenght of the caster wheel, where it goes the hex nut inside the cap is a hole, so i goes all the way thru, later I just added a washer to make more snuggy: http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums...3-12A6-46EE-BDEC-6293C49675A2_zpsr5dapuzh.jpg

So the Mystery is SOLVED!!!

I hope this can help everybody with this stand, the wheels I bought are great....I can move my machine with 1 finger they are super easy to move around !!

Take care !

So I'm back on the prowl now for some casters for my 5800 ELS. I took out the bumpstop and measured it with my calipers and tap/die set. The threading length is 1 inch, the overall male width is .49" (which goes from end-to-end including the thread, so the 3/8" shaft like @diredesire said above is maybe(?) accurate, but not sure if the threading width is part of the "shaft"), and the threading is SAE 12. Anyone possibly have an idea where I could find some brake casters with those dimensions other than straight from Gamma? Not having much luck with Grainger or Uline or Amazon or McMaster Carr.

I also have no clue what SAE 12 is telling me...is that #12?

I tried searching all over the 'net last night for casters at a decent value. Ended up calling Gamma and just ordering them. I don't know why these were so difficult to find out there, but I just picked up a set for $100 shipped.

Wow... old thread bumped...

Need to use a lock washer. Split or belleville will do.

Hmmm... check your local harbor freight?
