Centers in NBA: like S&V in tennis, in extinction

Some of you guys worry me..lol. Zach Randolph is a PF man. I mean, cmon.

So I think what you are saying is the era of the slow big man is over. I agree there. But it does not mean the era of the Center is over. The Center is just now a faster, more athletic player who is ideally close to 7 feet tall or has a reach of 7'3 or more.

Randolph plays the closest offensive game to a old school center than any other person on any of the playoffs team

Yea I'm pretty much saying slow big men are a dying breed. Which again was what I took the essence of the OP to mean.

I'm more interested to see what SVG does that what Kerr does. SVG can assemble some pieces and really have detroit in playoffs quick (the east sucks thats why).

Will he get Drummond going off the pic and roll action like he had with howard in orlando. Surronded by some decent three point shooters that can work.

I don't see Monroe and Smith being in detroit for long though.

I disagree on Randolph. He is a classic PF. He has that deadly midrange game. Reminds me of a better Horace Grant. But regardless, I was not sure what the OP was saying since he specified Centers. It was a poor analogy to compare it to S&V tennis since there are many slower bigs still in the the playoffs, and zero S&V players who win slams. Definitely agree the slower bigs are going away, but the Center position itself is still key.

But yeah SVG is such a great coach. It was a huge loss for the Magic when he got fired. If you look at what he did to get us to the finals, it was such a creative plan. And honestly if Dwight had developed his footwork we would have won multiple titles. The problem is that he could be guarded one on one by Bynum, Garnett and even a scrub C on the Hawks. So once you can guard Dwight one on one, and you have no perimeter player that can create his own shot off the dribble, you are screwed. The Magic tried to salvage an aging Vince Carter for this task, but that was a bad trade that started a downward spiral that ended up with Gilbert Arenas.

I get where he was going in the analogy. It doesn't quite work.

But I think he misses watching great Centers and obviously hates ball movement and team work and smart shots. He wants more gheorghe muresan and shawn bradley types in his life.

WRONG

A great center doesn´t equate to big center.Guys like Malone,Lanier, Unseld didn´t hit 7 feet yet knew everything about positioning, one on one low and high post defense, moves, teamwork.Yes,teamwork was a concept linked to the anchorman right up in the middle. Now it is just 5 guys running the floor with no team concept, no pick and rolls man..you clearly weren´t there when it happened and you believe to have been born in the best of the possible worlds¡¡¡

Honestly guys, do you think whohever is considered today´s best " center" would hold a candle to the secondary 80´s like a Cartwright or a Carroll.

Much less the premium " 5".They won´t learn what it took to do their jobs.

Birdman really solidified Lebron and Wade's job today at the end. Perfect example of the value of a strong center type.
