Challengers tournaments of the '70s

Legend
Tournaments on the challengers circuit were born in 1978, which means that all tournaments played after January 1st 1978 included in the main ATP circuit are not considered challengers.
I would like to understand before 1978, having ascertained that there was no inferior circuit, which tournaments had the characteristics of a challengers.
To do this, I thought of using only one data: the prize money.
Taking 1978 as an example and as a basis for calculation the tournaments with 175.000 (20 *) and considering that the lowest level ATP circuit tournaments have a prize money of 50.000 while all the challengers had in 1978 a prize money of 25.000, I thought that a proportion could be made in the years prior to 1978.

I actually wanted it seems an attempt from 1968 to 1971, but the tournaments have magmatic prize money and above all too low in some cases.
Big tournaments like Rome or Australian Open often have ridiculous prize money.
From 1972 to 1977 it is less complicated.
I have been leaving since 1977.

1977 is simple because as in 1978 there are as many 175.000 tournaments as the basis, so they think like the following year: with prize money <50.000 the tournaments are of a similar level to the 1978 challengers.

Tournaments with prize money <50.000 are:
Auckland (Amritraj wins)
Cairo (Jauffret w).... 30.000 .... is therefore halfway there.
Firenze (Bertolucci w)..... 30.000 .... is therefore halfway there.
Laguna (Pattison w)
Basel (Borg w)
Zurich (Norback w)

Compared to 1978 where between the main circuit tournaments and the challengers there is a gap of 50.000-25.000 in 1977 the only difference is that there are 3 tournaments with prize money in the middle.

1976
In 1976 the tournaments comparable to the 175.000 in 1977-78 had prize money of 125.000.
As a result, the prize money for entering the main circuit is lowered to 30.000 and that for challengers to 18.000.

Tournaments with prize money < 30.000 are:
Auckland (Parun wins)
Nuremberg (McMillan w)... 25.000 .... is therefore halfway there.

Basel is now listed with 50.000 prize money. Zurich, Auckland and Laguna Niguel have 25.000. However, for some reason the Laguna tournament was not included in the ATP rankings.

Grand Prix events still had to have at least 50.000 USD prize money (just as in 1977), so I would not lower the prize money limit for the main circuit.

Thank you for your contribution (also because there won't be many people on the planet interested in challengers:p:D ...)
you therefore understand that ATP distributed points to Auckland, Zurich, Cairo and Florence, but not to Laguna?

I trust your information on 50.000 the problem is that you exclude tournaments with < 50.000 from the main circuit there are about 10 other tournaments and they are starting to be a little too many. I do not know.

Tournaments with prize money <50.000 are:

25.001-50.000 and ATP points (middle territory, but not reaching 50.000 .. challengers standard)

Cairo (Jauffret w).... 30.000 .... is therefore halfway there.
Florence (Bertolucci w)..... 30.000 .... is therefore halfway there.

< 25.000 and ATP points (challengers standards)
Auckland (Amritraj wins)
Zurich (Norback w)

< 25.000 no ATP points (challengers standars)
Laguna (Pattison w)

As a result, the prize money for entering the main circuit is lowered to 20.000 and that for challengers to 10.000.

Tournaments with prize money < 20.000 are:

they all turn out to be IPA USLTA Circuit tournaments (Riordan Tour)
Baltimore (Connors w)

Roanoke (Connors w)
Omaha (Nastase w)
Des Moines (Graebner w)

In 1974 ATP decided to consider Auckland and Adelaide main circuit tournaments (both won by Borg) that have the characteristics of challengers, in fact in these locations in the previous and following years tournaments are played but never included in the ATP calendar.
Sounds like a favor to the Borg winner.
:confused:o_O:rolleyes:. It also happens in Manchester, clearly not valid for the main ATP circuit. A favor to Connors.:confused:o_O
Beckenham is also incomprehensible.
The others are from the Riordan Tour clearly inferior to the ATP standard, but at least part of a recognized circuit.

Summary before facing 1972.
ATP puts a series of tournaments in the ATP calendar by making an error in judgment:
in 1977 5 tournaments are entered despite a very low prize money (Laguna does not even have ATP points)
In 1976 2 tournaments are entered despite a very low prize money
In 1975 -
In 1974 7 Riordan Tour tournaments, 5 others are also considered official tournaments when they do not have adequate standards.
In 1973 8 Riordan Tour tournaments to which ATP does not grant points are in any case evaluated as official.

to me it is incomprehensible:confused:

In my opinion the following tournaments played in the period 1973-77 ...

- do not have the requirements to be declared official because the prize money was too low and ATP did not give them the necessary points to re-enter the ranking
1977 Laguna Niguel (Pattison wins)
1976 Auckland (Parun w)
1976 Nuremberg (McMillan w)
1974 Sydney (Masters w)
1974 Auckland (Borg w)
1974 Beckenham (Amritraj w)
1974 Manchester (Connors w)
1974 Adelaide (Borg w)

- if there had been a challengers circuit for the excessively low prize money would not have entered the ATP circuit,
1977 Cairo (Jauffret w)
1977 Florence (Bertolucci w)
1977 Auckland (Amritraj w)
1977 Zurich (Norback w)

- do not have the requirements to be declared official because prize money was too low and ATP did not give them the necessary points to re-enter the ranking, even if all 15 tournaments were IPA USLTA Circuit .. and the IPA USLTA Circuit was part of the ATP.
1974 Roanoke (Connors w)
1974 Omaha (Meiler w)
1974 Baltimore (Sandy Mayer w)
1974 Little Rock (Connors w)
1974 Paramus (Sandy Mayer w)
1974 Salt Lake City (Connors w)
1974 Tempe (Connors w)

1973 Baltimore (Connors w)

1973 Omaha (Nastase w)
1974 Des Moines (Graebner w)

1973 Paramus (Connors w)
1973 Jackson (Dibbs w)
