Champions Challenge - Disappointed

Went to the Champions Challenge - San Jose with McEnroe, Agassi, Courier and Todd Martin. We were very excited to see some of our tennis favorites from the past, live and in person.

I wouldn't spend the money to see this again. The tennis was not very good - McEnroe just isn't entertaining (I'm a big McEnroe fan - not as much now). Agassi was playing at a different level than the other 3 - Courier is a nice guy but didn't seem to be trying much - and Todd Martin??? Really?

The format isn't conducive to entertainment - and considering how bad the tennis was there wasn't much left to enjoy. If the players were out there to have some fun - we wouldn't care much about the tennis - but there was an odd tension between competitiveness and playfulness...

Considering the players had a 50% change over from when we purchased the tix - and the format is iffy... the tennis is poor - this is pretty close to a rip-off event.

What do you mean by Agassi playing at a different level from the other 3? Better or worse?

They must print money with this series. THink about it - no dedicated facilities, only a handful of paychecks, major sponsors, big names to draw fans.

"The Champions compete in pursuit of the #1 ranking on the PowerShares Series with $1 million dollars of bonus pool money on the line for the top three finishers on the circuit at the end of the season."

That's serious money to somebody like Martin or even Sampras who don't have any other source of income.

Sampras has untold millions. He doesn't need the cash. Todd Martin, with all the consulting and coaching that he does, I'm sure isn't hurting either.

The money is a draw to get big names to play, yes, but it's more of an incentive to play well and to participate in several events so they can sell more tickets.
