Do you think that Federer will break Pete's grandslam record? And if he does without the French Open will anyone care?

I think if he ties without breaking the record, people will always compare him with pete. I think he NEEDS the French Open!

I don't think he's going to break it myself. I think it's going to be much longer before anyone breaks it.

I think Federer will eventually break Pete's 14 grand slam record. Its only a matter of time before Fed pulls it off. Its also only a matter of time before Fed wins the French which i believe will happen sometime in his career. Even if he doesnt win the French but surpasses 14 grand slams then obviously he still would be the best player that ever lived regardless.

Good Point

I think he wants to get away from the Pete comparison, as crazy as that sounds. He needs the french to say "I have something Pete Doesn't"

Pete Sampras still isn't considered the best tennis play ever by some, because he didn't win the French. If Federer is going to stand a chance of universal recognition as the best ever, he needs the French at least twice.

Well whoever says that are complete fools. I do agree that Sampras is one of the top 10 best tennis players in hisotry, maybe even top 5. that includes both women and men.

Unforutnately, federer is going to break it, i want sampras record to live on, but unless somone can step up besides nadal, its going to happen. Will he be this dominant though. Nope. it is goin to catch up to him and he will soon be like a sampras and only be a real force at wimbledon. but i can't see that happening until at leas 08 or 09. by then federer only needs one or maybe 2 slam wins to beat petes record

I don't agree, I think if he wins a total of 14 grandslams or more with a french open included, he'll be regarded as the GOAT.

Who cares.

A head to head win already says that :)

So you are telling me that any idiot who beat Pete during his career is automatically the best ever. Get out of here!! If you remember and you weren't drunk or something, Pete was on his way out with 13 grandslams, Federer was a young kid on his way up. Pete lost in 5 sets and close ones at that. 7-6(7) 5-7 6-4 6-7(2) 7-5. If Pete had won that match, we never would have heard from Roger Again! That match is was and is still his biggest win to date. Until Roger breaks the record pete is still the standard!

"If Pete had won that match, we never would have heard from Roger Again! That match is was and is still his biggest win to date". Freddyvalencia

I can't find any logic in this statement.

Nope, id rather have endless hypothetical arguements on "what if" than actually use something real.

If you can find another player that beat pete that is in contention for the goat i think we should use that match to base our opinions on.

Pete has more titles, but anyone who plays tennis at a decent level can see feds game is far better than pete's. Pete had very poor fitness and lacked consistency. Sampras was like roddick, get the serve back and you have a great chance of winning the point. The guys playing when pete was had the worst return of serves in the history of the game. Then again they were serve and volley'rs so not alot can be expected of them. I think someone posted a stat on andres overhyped returning, like 1 return winner for every 7 aces and 11 service winners.
