I use luxilon alu power rough and it plays great for me in the crosses when hybriding with gut mains. But it's a little expensive since I'm hybriding with gut.
Are there any cheap co-poly alternatives for the alu power rough that will play a lot like them?
Tourna Big Hitter Silver. I prefer smooth over rough, but choice is yours.
Msv co-focus makes a good poly cross string in almost any setup. I've personally never used it, but I've heard from almost everybody that it is a great cross string.
Yeah but it has an extruded co-polyester monofilament, which is the same as the RPM Blast. And personally I hated RPM Blast. So I'm not sure if ill like it and won't think it'll play like alu power rough.
I played with MSV recently after hearing all the good reviews but did not like it. No replacement for alu rough as crosses. You are probably right in that MSV is more like RPM blast.
Did you try it as a full bed or did you use it with gut hybrid?
I tried it with gut hybrid, both in crosses and mains. I found it a bit too soft and spungy, not as crisp as alu rough.
Genesis Typhoon is very much like ALU Power Rough right down to the aluminum fibers. The fact that it has better tension maintenance is a nice bonus. Terrific string.
Would you prefer having Tuphoon as crosses with gut mains? Or should I use k-boom or big hitter silver rough as crosses with gut mains?
I only play Typhoon in a full bed. Note that it is a twisted string, so it may (or may not) cause faster wear on your natural gut mains than the textured surface of ALU Power Rough or the BHSR. This would be my only concern.
When freshly strung, Typhoon comes very close to ALU Power Rough, with the ALU PR maybe having only a slight edge in playability. After playing a bit the advantage shifts to Typhoon -- it really shows little change in tension or playability until it dies. Just as durable, too. I prefer it to ALU PR and BHSR -- have heard good things about K-Boom but have not played it.
Pro's Pro Spinox is a good option. It's very similar to the ALU Power Rough and it only cost $33.70 per reel (660 ft).
Also how did you find the smooth and rough different in terms of playability, feel, bite, and tension loss?
Which one do you think will play closest to alu power rough? Big hitter silver or the silver rough? And how about the big hitter blue and blue rough? How do those compare?
A quality string that I believe is produced by Genesis is Black Venom Rough. I used it years ago before I settled on a multi string. It may not be as crisp, but you should like the results.
