Check out these old greats on vid

I don't think that is entirely fair. He had his share of big victories, and his Wimbledon final against Smith was a classic. He may even have played better than against Ashe.
You consider end-of-year events "big"? They are not usually included in Slam counts.

Fabulous highlights here!

It's often cited as one of the reasons the women do not go to 5 sets. Henin, who was rather fit, having bad cramps after 3 hours on a court, and Capriati started to clamber about like Serena.
Still, a great match.

Here's another, but it's really as much worth it for the mini documentary about power tennis and how the racquets are affecting the game that starts this vid off:

Tony Bennett is more comfortable at the net than most of the ATP tour. @1:35

By chance in a way: after university l moved to London and looking for a tennis club I tried 3 local to where l lived. Of the three, one was much friendlier. By chance the Chairman ran a Tennis Celebrity Corporate company and he had a long history with tennis - LewHoad was his best friend and he remains very close to John Lloyd (he escorted Navratilova to the Evert/Lloyd wedding - it's his photos in the Carol Thatcher book, which, much to his chagrin, she never returned). So, this coupled with my love for tennis history and the fact that I'm a pretty good player- I won the club championships many times- got me an immediate 'in' to the inner circle. Maria's best friend (herself had played briefly on the tour, and occupied a senior position at the ITF) became, and remains, a good friend so I was swiftly introduced to Maria as a hitting partner. Which was incredible as you can imagine. We became firm friends as I enjoyed her wit, and her many stories of other legendary players - and she was quite candid! You can probably guess the players that Bueno had little time for socially.
I was her guest at Wimbledon many times.
I was able to return the favour in a small way - l worked for HM Government and did reasonably well and got her invited to a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. As luck would have it Princess Alexandra was in the Royal Party and seized upon Maria and brought her out of the main throng to speak to her.
I have absolutely nothing but good things to say about Maria. And to hit with her was the icing on the cake. Her timing had to be seen to be believed.
Pure class.
Maria was the first women match I recall watching..I remained stunned..many consider Lenglen a diva, a ballet dancer..but Maria was that plus very dangerous shotmaking and had that aura of princess...she was the mother.of the fairs

People, don't you know about it, whether there is a video record of the 1970 French Open final Kodeš-Franulović? Kodeš would love to see a video record of his first winning Grand Slam final, but he can't get it. Of course, he contacted the organizers of RG, but they replied that they themselves didn't have a video of this match, only a short video clip lasting a minute and something from the end of the match. Do any of you have a video record of this match? If so, I would like to ask the person in question to publish a video record of the match on YouTube, which would make Mr Kodeš very happy.

Shocking that RG doesn't have that match. I truly hope it turns up some day.

In the meantime, here's Connors and Mac at Queen's in 1982.

Orantes and Andres Gomez strike me as similar players. Both with that fluid feel for the game. Gomez more modern and aggressive, of course.

How often does one come upon a set of highlights, or a full match, from this era on Youtube where you can hear the ball come off the racket this crisply?

I just wanted to share this, knowing that many of us have seen this match, just to point this out. This is just a pleasure to watch largely due to the sound quality.

By the way, Gottfried is hitting the ball really hard - often in a flat line drive. You don't fully appreciate this until you hear the impact.

Great video. Gottfried was a very good player and very pleasant to watch. It lacked a little solidity to win a Slam, but he had excellent results (final in FO, 1/2F in Wimbledon and 1/4F in US Open).

US Open Men's Singles Finals (full matches):

1969: Rod Laver vs. Tony Roche

2001: Lleyton Hewitt vs. Pete Sampras

2002: Pete Sampras vs. Andre Agassi

I recently found film clips of two Rod Laver matches on youtube. One is semi of Longwood US pro 1967 against Fred Stolle (Laver won in three), the scond the final of 1968 against John Newcombe (Laver won in three straight sets). Its film not tv, footage is taken from near the baseline. One can see well the service action of the players, the elegant play of the tall Stolle and the dynamic play of Newk. Especially in the Newk match one can also see the variety of Lavers backhand, which has underspin, topspin or even sidespin as you will. In the first clip, the grass is bad, and Laver is wearing spikes.

I lied to Urban. I wondered in a post to him if maybe Austin had problems moving on grass. The answer is here! Enthralling and wonderous rallies all through this match. Now Tracy is not as graceful and fluid as the Australian gazelle( nobody was) was, but she is moving very well and covering a lot of court on a sunny dry day. She is anticipating and stroking the ball with power too.. As for Evonne she won this one and she had to play well to do it.

If you like wood racket tennis... I recommend this.

Something a wee bit different. Footage of Jaroslav Drobny from 1949, being interviewed/reciting a script on the British Movietone Youtube channel.

This would have been filmed barely a month after he and Vladimir Cernik defected during the Swiss Championships in Gstaad.

This is real classic tennis!

Great video. The wind was terrible. Very difficult to play. Great victory for Edmondson because Newcombe was still playing very well. Edmondson was a real good player. He reached the SF in Wimbledon too (and played 5 sets against Borg in Wimbledon 77).

Found this on the John McEnroe Channel on Youtube: a doubles match from 1988 between JMac & his brother Patrick versus teenagers Michael Chang (16 yo) & Pete Sampras (17 yo).

It was during the Michelin Challenge, an exho held in December 1988. Pretty low resolution and audio quality's a bit iffy too, but still funny to see them all, especially Sampras who looks about 12 years old.

I found a couple of news articles covering the event:
