If i recall well, that Masters semi virtually decided the 79 World Champ

Mac had won the USO, WCT and DC while Borg had won Wimbledon and Roland Garros. His Masters title determined the outcome.

Awesome! Great videos! I watched some matches posted in the last few pages. I enjoy splurging in older matches from the recent past and decades ago.

I just watched Nastase vs. Ashe 1972 U.S. Open Final:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lf4wrrpzdYc

I appreciate tennis from any part of time, from the present to the past. From this particular match I'm awestruck how smooth the strokes were, the net play and how matches were played back then. Very good stuff.

Two very talented, yet somewhat inconsistent players. Both had a different style, but both were truly unique.

The Chemold was the first non wood tennis racquet I ever used. And of course it's perhaps the worst racquet I've ever used! For Laver to win with that racquet is perhaps greater than winning the Grand Slam...and I am not exaggerating by much.

I heard Laver used to bend them fairly often.

Sounds like the T-2000. (At least Connors never bent those.)

If Laver did not use the Chemold I wonder if he could have won a couple of extra majors.

Not sure if Rod use the Chemold all year round, unless he used a paint job (which I don't believe was common back then). In his book he says he endorsed the Chemold for the US, a wooden Dunlop for Down Under and a wooden Donnay for Europe.

Also while he does admit that "the money was so attractive" he also says, "[A] racket is a special thing to me, and if I use it and recommend it I want to feel it's the best possible weapon for a tennis player." And then he adds that "aluminum never quite gave... the 'feel' [he] got from wood," so he eventually went back to wood, though he doesn't say exactly when.

Of course switching between those racquets probably didn't help much, but it does seem that it didn't hurt him much, either.

Graf vs Sabatini Olympics finals in Korea '88 the whole match

I love watching these two. Graf is actually obliged to depend on more than her power and speed. She has to think tactically.

As for Gabby she may not be one of the fastest of players but she manages to be in the right spot often enough to sustain rallies vs Graf. She reads the Graf ball better and earlier than almost anyone, I think. It has to be all that earlier exposure, practice and doubles play together. Graf vs Sabatini olympics finals in Korea '88
