This was the event with the diamond trophy. You had to win the event 3 out of 5 years to get it.

Gene also had a two handed forehand. I always thought that was a bit crazy. He made is as high as 5th in the rankings, too.

Yes it was soo much better and they used the whole court and many different strokes. Now it is just faster and one dimentional

@PDJ can you help here? I am fairly sure I see Maria here, but who can you positively identify as Bueno in these clips or anyone else for that matter. so many women, so little solid evidence.

Yes. Definitely Maria. And even without the tennis, l would recognise her walk and the gesture when she sweeps her hand across her face.
She really was a class act. And a Diva. But in the best sense, with an amazing sense of humour, and such kindness of spirit.
I may have mentioned this before?
A conversation with Lew Hoad (they were great friends) at my tennis club. Both were in London for Wimbledon.
Maria was bemoaning a current player who barely said two words to her the previous day at the AELTC. Hoad replied that they'd both had their day and it was others who now held the spotlight. Maria replied:
Darling, when I open the fridge door and the light comes on..... l smile" :)
In fairness to La Bueno there are few players that can boast multiple statues in their native country.
It's very fitting she was given a State Funeral.
And, trust me, she would have liked that.

You maybe interested to know that of current players, Maria was very fond of Maria Sharapova. And for all the talk of Sharapova being icy Maria Bueno held a very different view. Not least because Sharapova was extremely respectful of Bueno's legacy and treated her with the deference this commanded.

You have to know how envious of you, I am. To know someone of that stature in the game, who also happens to be gracious, kind and entertaining is something to envy. How did you happen to meet her, may I ask?

By chance in a way: after university l moved to London and looking for a tennis club I tried 3 local to where l lived. Of the three, one was much friendlier. By chance the Chairman ran a Tennis Celebrity Corporate company and he had a long history with tennis - LewHoad was his best friend and he remains very close to John Lloyd (he escorted Navratilova to the Evert/Lloyd wedding - it's his photos in the Carol Thatcher book, which, much to his chagrin, she never returned). So, this coupled with my love for tennis history and the fact that I'm a pretty good player- I won the club championships many times- got me an immediate 'in' to the inner circle. Maria's best friend (herself had played briefly on the tour, and occupied a senior position at the ITF) became, and remains, a good friend so I was swiftly introduced to Maria as a hitting partner. Which was incredible as you can imagine. We became firm friends as I enjoyed her wit, and her many stories of other legendary players - and she was quite candid! You can probably guess the players that Bueno had little time for socially.
I was her guest at Wimbledon many times.
I was able to return the favour in a small way - l worked for HM Government and did reasonably well and got her invited to a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. As luck would have it Princess Alexandra was in the Royal Party and seized upon Maria and brought her out of the main throng to speak to her.
I have absolutely nothing but good things to say about Maria. And to hit with her was the icing on the cake. Her timing had to be seen to be believed.
Pure class.

I've come to this a bit late....

I reckon the girl shown along with BJK at Forest Hills is Karen Hantze (later Suzman). I think she is also the one at Wimbledon with the dark fringe to her skirt, and her final opponent is Vera Sukova (Helena's mum).

Also at Wimbledon is left-handed Ann Hayden, before she became Ann Jones, and Christine Truman.

A lot of the faces are familiar, without being able to put names to them. It was over 50 years ago!!

Maria Bueno is so distinctive in her serve and movement, you couldn't think it was anyone else.

How would I know? I can't find a single you-tube clip of her playing a match that lasts even 10 minutes.

I believe that Nastase was the player who--by using a spaghetti-string racquet--broke Vilas's clay-match winning streak in 1977. (It was at the Aix tournament, and Vilas defaulted the match in protest.)
I think the ITF banned spaghetti stringing a few weeks later.

Small wonder that Nastase generally played poorly in majors, his personality was severely challenged by the big-time events, where he could not horse around.

It appears that Nastase had the mistaken and unfortunate belief that his antics were more influential than his accomplishments.

If it had been the other way around, we might be discussing him as a GOAT-contender.

I don't think that is entirely fair. He had his share of big victories, and his Wimbledon final against Smith was a classic. He may even have played better than against Ashe.

Perhaps. A player with Nastase's talent with eights slams is in a different league.

Great clip. Thank you. Build-wise Gonzales looks very like Ashe. If I hadn't been told it was Gonzales and had only looked quickly I might have thought it was Ashe, especially his serving style and movement on the last point.

Yes they're movement is similar although I'd say Gonzales' was a bit more "cat like" than Ashe's despite the former being only an inch taller, at 6'2". On film Gonzales seems taller.

Very nice, thanks for sharing this.

Never had the curiosity to check their YT channel. Mainly recent stuff but, for those who, like myself, enjoy "classic" tennis, they are starting to add older stuff : that Sampras-Bruguera (what a match, I remember watching it live) and the famous Chang-Lendl match, soon available.

We want more!

Yeah, I'm glad they aren't just uploading recent matches that are quite easily available or still fresh in the memory. I never check their channel (gave up on it a while ago) but thankfully they were recommended.

INA france have stopped selling tennis matches so what they give with one hand, they taketh away with the other.., but fair play to them for uploading stuff.

I wonder how many people seeing Leconte's 'funny' antics nowadays realise he was actually a terrific player. The best shotmaker of his generation probably.

This is an interesting film showing the 1947 Davis Cup, with extended footage of Kramer. At this point in time, Kramer was not following everything to net,

staying back even on first serves, coming in only when his ground-strokes gave him the edge.

Great to see Schroeder and Bromwich playing in bare feet, haven't seen that recently.

Let's reintroduce the bare-foot option.
