Chelini trashes roddick

Roddick does not look like a top 10 player. How does he stay at number 3 in the world? Chela is ranked 23 in the world, just kept the ball in play and won 6-0, 6-4, I guess the secret is out on how to beat Roddick.

Roddick is a one shot wonder, and his one shot is not a winner anymore. Nice of Chela to let him win a few games in the 2nd set.

I saw the 2nd set from 3-2 onwards and a bit before. Roddick was ...well..his backhand was too inconsistent while Chela was playing some good tennis. He wasn't missing much, scrambling well and hitting winners when opportunities arose. However, Roddick could have hung in there. He started the 3-3 game well, hitting big forehands and following his strokes in, and then putting away 2 overheads to go up 30-0. Good, I thought, that's the way to play. Next point he lost, I can't remember how but that pissed him off. Next point, Chela hits a deep return into the backhand corner, Roddick tries to run around it and hit a down-the-line forehand but that's a VERY low percentage tactic - ball goes wide by 10 inches or so. You can just see the frustration building up. Next point, he goes for a winner off a ball that I think bounced awkwardly. It was a careless shot. 30-40. Instead of staying focused and fighting, Roddick looks exasperated. Like damn I lost my mini-momentum. He rushes a forehand and nets it. Game over. Chela stays strong on his serve and the match is.
Some pointers
- Roddick moves horribly on clay. Don't confuse that with him running fast, he MOVES bad.
- Roddick hit one serve to Chela's two.
- Roddick is doing well to come in and volley, but that's his only hope because his ground game sucks against these dirtballers.

That is a very ignorant statement man, he shouldn't be top 3 cause he's not great on clay...??? He does well on hard courts, carpet and grass whereas chela depends more on clay... He's number cause he wins and has success...

it's on clay where this strategy is the most lethal to beat Roddick type of players.

The score is bad, but I would fully expect Chela to defeat Roddick on clay. Chela is a very good player and about three levels above Roddick on the dirt.

Give credit to Chela. I don't know why he doesn't have a better ranking, but don't let that fool you; he's very underated. Same for Calleri. Those two are my favourite Argies... There, I said it.

^^ Absolutely, tons of credit to Chela, he played awesome, only made a few errors and was hitting very confidently. Roddick played like crap, it looked like he was finally going to get something going and then he didn't put away that one overhead and made silly errors to get broken.

The way Chela played, i'd give him the edge over Gonzo. And speaking of the argies, ouch for Chucho!!!

He's #23 ... he's no slouch either ;)

And improving his ranking this week, too. Top20, perhaps? He lost in R64 last year to Roger Federer. He gets 124 more points, which would be 1250, which is what Hewitt has now at #20.

Now, if he beats Gonzalez, he's going to be inside the Top20.

Edit: Cañas made it to the R32. He's going to be the new #20 with 1252 pts, if Chela doesn't make it though Gonzalez.

Oh joy.
I can't decide who I dislike more.

And what...Chela in Top 20? Where have I been for the past few months? Last time I saw Chela play (a year ago) his shots were less precise than mine.

i would have to side with you Wayne...roddick is #3 in the world because he does well on grass, the summer hard courts, and the carpet/faster surfaces towards the end of the year

chela is more of a clay-court specialist....obviously the score is still a little off from what i expected, but i am not too shocked that roddick lost, in rome, on clay, to a player of chela's caliber

Roddick would have dismantled Chela on any other surface.

So why do people call him Chelini?

I know! :p

not too classy, agreed, but chelini just did what many players would have liked to do but didnt have the guts to do it. IMHO.

Andres, what these guys don't know about Chela (and you Andres probably know better than anyone here, because you're in Argentina) is when he (Chelini) started this year he says "I am not playing Davis Cup this year, I'll be working harder on my ranking". or something like that.....
I think first of all he deserves more respect and credit for what he's doing, "he is not just passing the ball" as one of the guys states above. He is actually beating the #3 player in the world, and some others top players.
