I will be moving to Chicago in January 2020 and wanted to see where people play and if there are any groups to join. I am NTRP 5.0 and am looking to get some good hitting in.

Several nice places to play but for year round you need a tennis club. The best two in the city are midtown and Lakeshore Sports Fitness. For more reasonable prices in the winter then McFetridge which is run by park district with no membership but crazy busy. Summer plenty of parks with tennis courts. If you’re going to live in the burbs then depends on location what facilities are around.

I don't live in Chicago so please take this with that understanding but my boy recently played in a tournament at Xs Tennis Inc which is a new tennis complex close to Midway airport that was pretty cool. I guess there was some investment by the mayor, the USTA, others in the area to knock down abandoned buildings and put this building in place. There are a bunch of indoor and outdoor courts including outdoor clay. It looked like professional team tennis plays there as well. Again, I don't know Chicago and the area was sketchy but the facility was awesome!

Do you live there? If not, what experience have you had that gives your input any weight? Seems like a harsh indictment, imo.

I visited University of Chicago with my son and daughter a few times in the past year and just didn't feel safe when I was about at night even near U. of Chicago. I felt really safe when I visited University of Virginia in Charlotteville or Virginia Tech in Blackburg. No way I would let my son and daughter go to U. of Chicago, IMO.

You would not let your kid go to University Of Chicago because of the neighborhood given the fact it is like top 20 university in US? hmm, ok, Then again, you are also the one that posted some real gems so it's not like that would be unexpected:
I never said that. I was just asking about the (P) in the UTR rating.

He is very physically gifted player. At 17, he is 6 ft 2 187 lbs. He spent a year abroad training soccer and then join soccer DA after that. He can run the 40 yard dash in 4.35 seconds. He run the half marathon in less than 1 hours 8 minutes. He would have been a very good D1 soccer if it weren't for the concussions. He trains for tennis the exact way he trained soccer. It help that his parents can afford to pay for the very best coaches that also coached ATP players. I saw him practice with former ATP and D1 players and he looks really good. I have no idea if he will be at the level of top-10 nationally for U18 but with training like that, he definitely has a chance.

I rather have my kids go to UVA, VA Tech than U. of Chicago. No one disputes that U. of Chicago is a much better school but I just did not feel safe when I was there. I am sure others might feel safe there but not me.

You're wrong about U. of Chicago in the top 20. U. of Chicago is very much like Ivies. In other words, it is in the top 5

Welcome to the Neigh @srv vlly ! Chicago is a great city and Lakeview is one of it's best neighborhoods. + There are several indoor clubs nearby and many more outdoor parks with courts. One of the Lakeview parks by the lake has 20 outdoor courts.

Let me know if you need any info and let's schedule some hitting.

Your best bet in the winter if you're living in Lakeview is either Midtown, which is pricey or Lakeshore Athletic Club. McFedridge is less expensive, but you have to online reserve a week in advance and getting a spot can be tricky. If you're on the west side of Lakeview you can hop on the Edens and go to Tam in Niles, which is probably about 20-30 minutes depending on the time of day. If you're LGBT you can check out secondcity tennis leagues. It's a lot easier to get courts in the summer of course. There are free courts everywhere. The closest ones are by the lake and Belmont, just East of Lake Shore Drive. There's two sets of courts, one in better shape than the other, with about 15 courts in each set.

And for those disparaging Chicago, I've moved here from Michigan over 30 years ago with the intention of moving eventually to NYC and I loved it so much I've been here ever since. It's a great and fun city to live in and you'll love it, especially during the summer months. If you're only basing your opinions after going to a tournament by the neighborhoods around Midway or U of C, then you're missing a lot.

I didn't mean anything negative at all about Chicago and our tournament experience. We had no issues there whatsoever so I hope I did not leave you with that impression. I have always enjoyed my time in Chicago.

As far as University of Chicago it would be awesome if our son got into that school but I don't think that is in his cards. Growing up my dad had a friend that was a prof at University of Chicago and we would travel there often.

Sorry if I left that impression. I think the tennis complex was awesome.
